Begin your study of artificial intelligence here

If this book doesn't have you sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation of the next paragraph, then you probably have no interest whatsoever in logic, mathematics, physics, computer technology, and artificial intelligence.

For me, it was breathtaking. There were times when I had to take a rest after each paragraph just to fully assimilate the ramifications of what Kurzweil was describing.

Higher intellects may be able to absorb this subject matter with less amazement. However, I enjoyed the ride.

Ray Kurzweil takes the time to explain in explicit detail where we have been and where we might be going in the area of artificial intelligence.

He is not only an inventor and a researcher, but he is also a teacher. A teacher is not satisfied until the student understands the material.

Some may say that this book is dated, but any introductory college AI course will cover the topics described in this book from the 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's.

This book changed my life. I have continued my personal study of artificial intelligence after being inspired by this book.

An incredible book

I read this book only recently, having read the author's two most recent books "The Age of Spiritual Machines" and his book "Kurzweil vs The Critics of Strong AI". Both are excellent books, and reflect the author's extreme optimism about the future of artificial intelligence. He is definitely one of the best apologists for AI, and documents well its living history. Reading this book after the recent ones gives an interesting comparison between what was real in AI then and what is real now. Indeed, the AI landscape has changed dramatically, and there were a few companies specializing in AI in business at the time of publication of this book, that are not around any longer. But for every company that has failed, there have been many more to take their place. Their character as companies has changed, due in part to the rise of the Internet. In fact, it is network engineering that has resulted in many of the applications of AI in the last 5 years, and those applications of course are not mentioned in this book, due to its date of publication.
The author begins the book with a discussion of what he calls "The Second Industrial Revolution", which, he claims, is now in progress, and is based on the rise of thinking machines. These machines will extend and leverage human mental abilities, he says, challenging the human uniqueness in this regard. He expresses caution over the idea of making our military defenses controlled by intelligent machines, at the same time expressing his confidence that machine intelligence will indeed be sophisticated enough for this to happen. This revolution is here he says, will be more radical than the first one, but cannot be stopped, and he encourages therefore the constructive use of its technology. Thus is the author's motivation to write this book: to give the reader an overview of what was possible in AI at the time, and encourage the benevolent use of it.
The author not only discusses the technology of AI, but also attempts to give the reader insight into just what AI is. This entails a discussion of philosophy, since philosophical debate dominated AI in its early years. Such debates are still common, but due to the frequent vituperation involved in them (which the author recognizes and mentions in the book), not much is to be gained from these. Time is better spent on actually trying to build thinking machines, and not engaging in conversations that lead nowhere. Since this book appeared, many philosophers have left their "arm chairs" and have joined in the practical research in artificial intelligence. This trend will no doubt continue in this century, thus giving rise to the "industrial philosopher".
A fairly detailed history of the field of artificial intelligence is given in the book, with several articles written by some of the more recognized individuals in the field. All of these are interesting reading, and shed light on the different attitudes and prejudices regarding AI. For readers who are new to AI, this will be welcomed, as well as the many discussions on the mathematical foundations of AI and its intersection with cognitive science.
The author refrains from including any mathematical notation or equations in the book, and this has its advantages and disadvantages. It allows a more general readership but sacrifices some of the clarity of thought that mathematics allows. The author does give a good discussion of pattern recognition though, especially edge detection. His discussion on this topic is interesting in that it brings up his demarcation between "logical" and "parallel" thinking. Logical thinking is referred to as "sequential" and "conscious", with a resulting limitation in computational ability. It is to be distinguished from parallel thinking which can process multiple levels of abstraction, and can occur without conscious direction. Pattern recognition is in his view an example of the latter, and he justifies this view in the book in some detail. More evidence for his view from laboratory experiments is needed however. Pattern recognition algorithms and technologies have exhibited considerable advance since this book was published.
There have been many advances in AI since the time of publication, due in large measure to the rise of the Internet. Most of these advances have been breathtaking, such as in computer chess, games with imperfect information, Bayesian networks, financial engineering, network intelligence, literary creativity, automatic theorem proving, to name just a few. The author discusses his projections for the future of AI in the book, and it is interesting to compare them with what really came about within the decade later. There is no doubt that more exciting developments are on the way, and the optimism expressed by the author in all of his writings is also characteristic of all who are responsible for these developments. The machines, getting more intelligent with every decade that passes in the 21st century, will bear the signature of these individuals: a tell-tale sign and proof of the genius of the human species.

This is an awesome book. This was required reading for a Business Class reflecting a future perspective. It can be a little scary as machines become sentient and must take care of mankind as we become their pets. It uses facts from the past to project this potential future state for mankind.

About the Author
Anthony Saunders is the John M. Schiff Professor of Finance and the Chair of the Department of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University. �Professor Saunders received his PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses at NYU since 1978. �Throughout his academic career, his teaching and research have specialized in financial institutions and international banking. �He has served as a visiting professor all over the world, including INSEAD, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the University of Melbourne. �He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions, NYU.
His research has been published in all the major money and banking and finance journals and in several books. �In addition, he has authored or co-authored several professional books, the most recent of which is Credit Risk Measurement: New Approaches to Value at Risk and Other Paradigms, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1999.

Marcia Millon Cornett is the Rehn Professor of Business at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She received her B.S. degree in Economics from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and her M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Finance from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Cornett has written and published several articles in the areas of bank performance, bank regulation, and corporate finance. Articles authored by Dr. Cornett have appeared in such academic journals as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, the Journal of Financial Economics, Financial Management, and the Journal of Banking & Finance. She served as an associate editor of Financial Management and is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Banking & Finance, Journal of Financial Services Research, FMA Online, the Multinational Finance Journal and the Review of Financial Economics. Dr. Cornett is currently a member of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the Finance Committee of the SIU Credit Union. Dr. Cornett has also taught at the University of Colorado, Boston College, and Southern Methodist University. She is a member of the Financial Management Association, the American Finance Association, and the Western Finance Association.

Great textbook.

As someone whose background is largely pure economics, finance can be confusing for me (many times the jargon of the field is similar but not quite the same as in economics). This book explains finance institutions and the way they manage risk very clearly and explicitly. It is the required text for my International Banking course. Great textbook.

About the Author
Robert Kirchubel has had a keen interest in the Eastern Front campaigns of World War II, and Operation Barbarossa in particular, all his adult life. He has already contributed work to World War Two in Europe and World War Two in the Pacific, and The International Military Encyclopedia. His three-volume study of the Barbarossa campaign is the product of several years' work and research.

Three books for (roughly) the price of one!

In "Operation Barbarossa: The German Invasion of Soviet Russia", author Robert Kirchubel combines three of his earlier works on the initial stages of German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 (Operation Barbarossa) into this one volume. Each of the earlier books were originally written for Osprey Publishing's Campaign Series. The three individual books were in the typical campaign format ... typically about 96 pages long, consisting of analysis of the campaign, commanders, forces and styles of warfare, pictures, illustrations, and maps.

Osprey has published other compilations where they have bundled several of their "Campaign" books into a single volume ("The First World War: The War to End All Wars" and "Battleground: The Greatest Tank Duels in History" are two that come to mind), with no changes or new material. However in this book, the author reformats his three books into one broader campaign and adds about 10 percent of additional content, making this book indeed more than the sum of its parts. :-)

Mr. Kirchubel has an easy to read style and he conveys a lot of information about the campaign within the book's covers. He writes primarily from the German side in this book, which is acceptable to me given that the Germans held the initiative during this time frame. (But note that there is sufficient coverage from the Soviet side to get the big picture.) A strong point of the book is where the author shows the tremendously negative impact that German strategic indecision had on the campaign, which could well have cost the Germans their chance to win the war. The illustrations, which I typically view more as "filler" than essential material, are quite good in this volume, as are the numerous photographs.

I do have a few very mild nits. First, a few of the maps could be better though, and don't convey as much information as one might want. Second, the editors let a few things slip through that they should have caught, such as one table that contains footnote marks but lacks an explanation of those marks. And finally, I think the coverage of Army Group Center could stand to be expanded a bit more, particularly toward the end of Barbarossa. This is probably a carry-over from the hard choices Mr Kirchubel undoubtedly had to make in his earlier book on Army Group Center (which I have not read). The page limitations in the "Campaign" format are strictly adhered to, and as the primary focus of the German attack was in Army Group Center, there is more to cover and correspondingly more that had to be abbreviated or left out.

Overall, this is an excellent book for the beginning to intermediate level students of the war, particularly those who have an interest in the German attack on the Soviet Union. But even I, a casual expert of the Eastern Front, really enjoyed the book and learned a few things. Four stars.

Mr Kirchubel expands his original summary

While the author enjoyed writing the Osprey Campaign trilogy some years ago, he always felt stymied by the page limitation and felt a better job could have been done without the restraints. This book is his vision of Barbarossa without the restraints.
In the Preface, Mr Kirchubel freely admits that 90% of the new book consists of the old trilogy and the new 10% consists of material involving political and ideological considerations as well as the latest in military information. The overall time horizon is the same, from June to December; coverage is from the initial invasion to the approaches of Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov by the respective Army Group. You also will have coverage of the fighting in Finland, the Arctic and the Crimea.

While much of the material in this book is "old", it is clear the author invested a lot of time on it for he gutted the old format and within limits started anew to reflect the inclusion of the three Army Groups in one volume and to avoid any weaknesses of the past. The introductions into each section are expanded and improved and the coverage is more thematic in nature than strictly chronological. You still have familiar chapter titles like Opposing Plans, Armies and Commanders providing the necessary background knowledge for when the campaign begins. The Campaign is sub-divided into five acts and consumes about 220 pages. Frontier battles and the fighting at Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev, Uman, Vyazma, Bryansk, the approach to Moscow are some of the highlighted areas. However, I still feel the late October, November timeframe is still light; the coverage of the fighting in the Kalinin sector and along the Mozhaisk Line could have been more fully developed. Though there is new information, there is also many of the same or nearly the same passages in both books.

There are many new photos and I recognized five new maps in addition to the two dozen maps of the original trilogy. There is a small Appendix, a Glossary and an expanded Bibliography which reflects the additional input in this new version. This bibliography will provide many good references if further reading is desired. The book also includes an Order of Battle, a Chronology and an expanded Index.

Mr Kirchubel has clearly tried and succeeded on improving the original edition. Though the presentation is smoother and provides some new material, there is not an abundance of new material so its not an easy call to recommend this book. It will depend on the interest level of the individual and whether you have the earlier trilogy. If you're new to the War or don't have the earlier campaigns, this book would be an excellent primer of the opening months of the Russo-German War and is recommended. On the other hand, if you've the original trilogy it will depend on how much you'll willing to pay for a small bump in information. Though hoping for more than 10% new material but being a fan of Barbarossa, I didn't mind paying that price: you get later coverage, more maps and photos of all three Army Groups in a hardcover for the price of a little more than a single soft cover campaign.

Reworked Version of Earlier Osprey Titles!

In the past, Osprey, like other publishers, has cobbled together similarly-themed volumes, tacked on a title and released it as a 'new' book, whereas it's really recycled goods. Results have been mixed. Their recent FIRST WORLD WAR: THE WAR TO END ALL WAR, for example, is less than the sum of its parts. Happily, OPERATION BARBAROSSA, THE GERMAN INVASION OF SOVIET RUSSIA took a different route and the result is an excellent, comprehensive and well-illustrated history of Hitler's disastrous drive eastward.

OPERATION BARBAROSSA derives from three Osprey 'Campaign' volumes previously done by author Robert Kirchubel: OPERATION BARBAROSSA 1941: ARMY GROUP SOUTH; OPERATION BARBAROSSA 1941: ARMY GROUP NORTH; and OPERATION BARBAROSSA 1941: ARMY GROUP CENTER, published between 2003 and 2007. Kirchubel, apparently with Osprey's blessing, took the time to rework and update those original works and blend them into a single, more expansive narrative.

Given the huge canvas Kirchubel has to deal with, he does an admirable job of detailing and presenting the myriad strategies, personalities, policies and events in an understandable fashion. After an introductory chapter relating the historical road to Barbarossa, he examines opposing German and Russian plans, armies and commanders, early frontier battles, the drive into Mother Russia, etc. There is a tremendous amount of material in Kirchubel's book but it's presented in an easy-to-understand fashion.

The text is complimented by dozens of b&w and color photographs, maps, charts, combat artworks, etc. Visually the book is well-done and appealing.

Having never read the three Campaign volumes upon which this 2013 Osprey release is based, I can't compare the various books. However, I found OPERATION BARBAROSSA a compelling and informative account of the German invasion of Russia. Recommended.

This is THE book on the subject

I suspect this is mainly used as a textbook for teachers or counselors and the like...but I bouoght it as a parent and I highly recommend this book.
I first saw a 1985 edition on our library shelves, read it and got so much useful information from it I took a chance on the newer version. I was not disappointed.
I have quoted and used this book at length in trying to educate the teachers and other staff involved in my son's education. I showed or told them what she wrote and quoted her, which lent some authority to my assertions.
She helped explain why my son is the way he is, in so many of his complexities. At last I understood why he reacts to things in such puzzling ways!
There might be other books on gifted kids out there, but I'm not sure they could beat her patient, highly educated, helpful tone.
Take notes as you go, there'll be a lot of things you'll want to find later to share with others interested in the same issues. Such as, one of the most important keys in finding an effective teacher for any student is the teacher's own self-image. Or, there IS a model of education that is shown to be effective for all levels of intelligence at once--the hands-on or whole topic curriculum (also called project-based). Or that the level of intelligence we now call gifted IS possible for all people to reach, if only they were raised in the "right" way--and that it is largely learned, not inherited. Or that teachers are a fairly poor identifier of the gifted kids; other kids are better at it!
These are my recollections only--but just as a sample of the kinds of things she says.
There's so much there you'll probably need to skip the parts that don't apply, or read more than once.

I just started reading this book, but it has proven to be interesting and helpful already. The text defines intelligence and the gifted learner. liked the book, had some great advice for teaching/developing gifted learners and will keep around as a reference. I did not give it 5 stars because some times the wording wasn't fluid which made some chapters difficult to read...not to mention each chapter is about 70-80 pages...plan ahead!

About the Author

Keith Hamilton is an historian in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His most recent publication (co-edited with Patrick Salmon) is Slavery, Diplomacy and Empire: Britain and the Suppression of the Slave Trade, 1807-1975 (2009).

Richard Langhorne is Professor of Global Politics at the University of Buckingham and a Full Professor in the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University, USA. He was formerly Director of Wilton Park, FCO, (1993-1996) and Director of the Centre of International Studies at Cambridge University (1987-1993).

Craig Wright's�plays include Melissa Arctic (2005 Helen Hayes Award), Orange Flower Water, The Pavilion, Recent Tragic Events, Molly’s Delicious, Mistakes Were Made, and The Unseen. Good actor piece for all characters.

If you're looking for a play to work on, this is a great for a few reasons. First of all, all three of the main characters ( 2M, 1F) have great material. Second, it's new enough that you haven't seen it done a million times. Third, it raises all kinds of moral questions, but it doesn't seem to be pushing an agenda.

I'm also a big fan of stories that address serious or dark material without losing lightness. This is FUNNY, even when it's going heavy.

Also, even though the characters are written as 30's, I think it would work for 22-early 40's.

A Good Play... But Depressing

I read this cover-to-cover on a plane ride back home. I'm currently looking for future shows to direct for a little theatre that I am working with. I wouldn't rule this one out. It is very funny in places. However, the subject matter is a bit "blue". I thought the playwright did a good job with the characters, but not a very good job with the clarity of what is really being said. It's one of those plays you really need to read at least twice. If you are an atheist or agnostic thespian, this play may appeal to you.

What a beautifully-written and timely play. Craig Wright writes about things our country is presently struggling with - religion, faith, scams, science, gun violence, environmental factors - and yet the play also feels universal. I plan to read more of his work after this.

Contemporary Linguistics : an introduction is a comprehensive, fully up-to-date introduction to linguistics. The book covers not only how language is structured, but also how it functions both socially and culturally, and how it is acquired and processed by speakers. It will prepare students to go on to more advanced work and, at the same time, will serve as a basic reference that students can continue to consult throughout their studies.

The text explores all the core areas of linguistics as well as numerous interdisciplinary and related areas.

• Core topics covered include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, the genetic and typological classification of the languages of the world, and historical linguistics.

William O' Grady is Professor of Linguistics and Graduate Chair in the Department of Linguisitics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Michael Dobrovolsky is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Calgary. Francis Katamba is a Reader in Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language at Lancaster University. His other publications include An Introduction to Phonology in the Learning about Language series, and New Frontiers in Phonology co-edited with Professor Jacques Durand, both published by Longman.

About the Author
WILLIAM O'GRADY teaches linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is the author of several scholarly books. His research focuses on syntactic theory, language acquisition, and Korean.

JOHN ARCHIBALD in addition to teaching linguistics at the University of Calgary, studies the acquisition of phonology and has written several books on the subject.

MARK ARONOFF is professor of linguistics at Stony Brook University and was President of the Linguistic Society of America for 2005. He has written numerous articles and several books on aspects of linguistic morphology, as well as on orthography and the teaching of linguistics.

JANIE REES-MILLER is director of the English as a Second Language program at Marietta College, Ohio. In research and teaching, she is concerned with the interface between theory and practice and with making linguistics accessible to nonlinguists. She is coeditor with Mark Aronoff of The Handbook of Linguistics.
