Jonathan Schorsch uses many previously unexamined sources to reveal the scope of Jewish anti-Blackness in Portugal, the Ottoman Empire, Italy, Amsterdam and the Caribbean. His study concludes that Jewish attitudes and behavior remained barely distinguishable from general European trends, less intense, although hardly benign.

Jonathan Schorsch is Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies in the Religion Department of Columbia University. He has published articles in American Jewish History, European Judaism, and Jewish Culture and History, among other academic journals and is also the Jewish Book Editor for Tikkun magazine.

A must read.

The Best is that Jonathan Schorsch was my Professor, so naturally I/we got a first hand experience with not just understanding but having the advantage of being part of the discourse of the true understanding of all the vast, mostly unknown, knowledge that went into this reveling book - it is is MUST read, not only for students partaking in Religious studies, but for anyone who wants to expand their mind.

One of the most thoroughly researched academic studies I've ever read. Fascinated material and history about Western Sephardi Diaspora and their relationship to slavery and blackness. Has enriched my understanding of Jewish history, interaction of Jewish Law and its surrounding realities, and construction of the idea of race. Read it years ago and I still think about it frequently.
