Key Concepts in Philosophy is a series of concise, accessible and engaging introductions to the core ideas and subjects encountered in the study of philosophy. Specially written to meet the needs of students and those with an interest in, but little prior knowledge of, philosophy, these books open up fascinating, yet sometimes difficult ideas. The series builds to give a solid grounding in philosophy and each book is also ideal as a companion to further study.
The philosophy of mind - inquiry into just what the mind is and the nature of its relationship to the body - is one of Western philosophy's focal points. This is a comprehensive, clear and authoritative guide to the subject's history, its key themes and concepts, and those philosophers who have most influenced it, aimed at students encountering the discipline for the first time.
The text illustrates the importance of the concept of mind in defining what it is to be human; this unifies the discussion and analysis of specific topics. Having outlined the major traditional accounts of the nature of the mind in western philosophy, the book goes on to examine such important concepts as subjectivity, intentionality and behaviour. The book also explores how far the concept of mind can be extended to animals and machines, such as computers and robots.
Philosophy undergraduates will find this an invaluable aid to study, one that goes beyond simple definitions and summaries to really open up fascinating and important ideas and arguments.

Review
'the book itself is written in a clear and lucid style and the analysis of the arguments is kept within reasonable limits. A good book to start from.' ~ E. Van Laerhoven, Acta Comparanda XVII
"The style of Mind is concise and clear, and Professor Matthews has the wisdom to communicate well the most important ideas of the many subjects through which he threads the narrative of his argument. The information throughout the book, drawn from several different philosophical systems, is both interesting and evidently relevant....
"...Professor Matthews' book nevertheless remains a lucid and intelligent introduction to the philosophical problems of mind."- Grant Bartley, Philosophy Now, January/ February 2007

Good Intro into Philosophy of Mind
By Mitch Baywatch
As I write this, it is listed as $90, and I'm by no means suggesting it's worth that. But it is a nice book. Pitched as an introductory book on the subject, it may be a bit much for those who never took a philosophy course, but it isn't like reading Heidegger either.
Matthews begins with a brief overview of Aristotle's account of mind and body. From there, he moves to Descartes' dualism and classical materialism, which weigh heavily on the remainder of the book. Neither of these is deemed to provide a convincing view of what minds are. Throughout the book, Matthews discusses the 'minds' of animals, other people and computers, and focuses on thinkers such as Searle, Wittgenstein and Merleau-Ponty. This is not primarily a historical overview of philosophers of the mind, and most of the philosophers discussed are from post WW2.
