"Long live our holy Germany" were the last words of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on the night of July 20, 1944. Peter Hoffmann's magnificient book is a salute to the Stauffenberg brothers and most importantly Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was the real thing, a man of deep Christian principles and extradionary courage who knew that the future of Germany was more important than his life and the life of his fellow conspirators. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live in freedom. Stauffenberg is not only a hero of Germany, but of anyone on earth who loves freedom and respects the laws of God and humanity. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel, who attempted to save his nation and slay the man he deemed "the antichrist." Doctor Hoffmann paints a wonderful picture of Stauffenberg's early life and military career. He then moves into minute detail of the plot to kill Hitler and the man whom fate had chosen to lead it. Simply a great scholastic achievement.

The ultimate Stauffenberg biography.

Peter Hoffmann's biography of Stauffenberg is the best anyone is likely to write on the subject. The book comprehensively assesses all primary sources hitherto used by Stauffenberg's previous biographers, plus many additional sources which the author himself found. Hoffmann's previous books, among them 'THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN RESISTANCE, 1933-1945', and 'HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY' serve as a foundation to this work which, all told, spans 30 years of scholarly research. As the depth and breadth of this study eclipses any other attempt to date, its conclusions are unassailably judicious. Thus, Hoffmann's 'STAUFFENBERG' has made perhaps the most definitive contribution to the historical field of resistance to the Third Reich.

Aside from being the single man in history to make several (and one very famous) attempts on the life of Adolf Hitler, Claus Von Stauffenberg was a unique guy.

Born in 1907 to Prussian aristocracy, Stauffenberg was playing the cello, reciting Shakespeare, and taking an interest in Catholic theology
by the age of exactly 12. Had he made a career out of any of these three, his fate would have been less cruel. Claus Von Stauffenberg, though, was a born soldier.

Ultimately becoming a General Staff officer in the German Abwehr, Stauffenberg and his brothers Berthold and Alexander still made considerable time for poet Stefan George, and were part of his "Secret Germany", a quasi-mystical poetic cult of sorts which worshipped George as "Master, and the three brothers were were prophesied by the poet manque as the future leaders of the Fatherland. Goethe, Holderlin, Rilke and Nietzsche were heralded as the predecessors of the movement. The problem with the entire affair was that George was not very talented and his literary salon was composed mostly of teenage boys.

Despite George, the slow but sure rise of the Third Reich (which, like most Germans, Stauffenberg initially welcomed and his inevitable participation in nearly all of Germany's military campaigns, Claus Von Stauffenberg always retained an odd detachment from his surroundings and a sense of self which was very strong.

The sheer wealth and richness of not only Stauffenberg's life, but the life of his wealthy and somewhat sheltered family--his career as a decorated soldier in the Wehrmacht, his prestige as a model, and as head of the General Staff office--makes his brutal death in front of the Bendleerstrasse in Germany a surreal and bizarre turn of events.

Stauffenberg was aware of Germany's imminent defeat, yet as early as 1942 he was making some quit imprudent remarks about the Fuhrer: "In August 1942 Stauffenberg told Major Joachim Kuhn, a close friend, that the treatment of the Jews and other civilians was monstrous, *that Hitler had lied about the cause of the war*, and that he had to be removed. He then shouted: "They are shooting Jews in the masses. These crimes must not be allowed to continue!"

Then in in another outbrust which later got him arrested, news of more atrocities sparked Stauffenberg to scream in front of SS and general staff alike:"Does not one German soldier have the courage to shoot that pig?"

Attempt after attempt failed; Stauffenberg was regularly seen carrying a "remarkably plump briefcase" (as Albert Speer put it) to three different meetings in Hitler's "Wolf's Lair" in Prussia. Once Hitler did not show up: the second time Stauffenberg's incompetent superiors instructed him to not to set the fuse, and the third time the bomb exploded and by sheer chance did not kill Hitler.

Even in the face of the Gestapo's considerable wrath, Stauffenberg did his best to get the coup de'etat to to succeed. In a most fortunate turn of events for Stauffenberg, probably, a General Staff officer involved in the plot turned on the other plotters and had a handful of them, Claus included, shot on the night of July 20, 1944.

Why? Why was such a priviliged and wealthy figure in the German army who would certainly never have been charged with war crimes choose to sacrifice his life, the life of his family and friends, in an attempt so tenuous and fraught with uncertainty?

The answer, I think, lies in Stauffenberg's unbelievable bravery, sense of common decency, and Christian background. Without these things he may indeed have been a terrifying force for the Third Reich. He could no longer stomach what was going on around him. Peter Hoffmann here gives the definitive biography of this heroic man who embodies perhaps the most inspiring example of "what might have been" in history. A must read.

Alpha Male

Here's a book every woman should read! While the best-selling guys' book tells how to get women in bed and dump them, this book shows women how to avoid these bad-news guys and find a man who will be a great husband, father, and life-long companion. It's fascinating to see what men have to say about what they want in a wife -- and it's not hard to follow the authors advice and start looking for the right kind of guy. Wish I'd had this book years ago!

The Best Match

I enjoy reading in the genre on relationships, including all the recent classics, and have read tons of books over the past few years, but this is the book that has best connected with me and inspired me thus far. It fits best with who I am and have always been. The "type" of man with whom one ends up needs to be taken seriously, for he can shape and define one's quality of life in so many ways, and the lives of any children one has with him. I feel that I am in the best and most mature position that I've ever been in when it comes to making choices about relationships and am able to make them with 20-20 vision. Every woman gets to this position in life at a certain point, sooner or later, and I'm glad that in my case it's sooner. I don't agree with the theories that suggest that an alpha woman is best off with a beta man, and this book certainly clarifies why that's not true. For the alpha guy will best appreciate-and deserve-the talents that the alpha female has to offer-not only as a professional, but also in terms of the classic art of being a woman. I like this book and it provides frameworks for what I've meant since I was 17, in saying that I will only marry a "man for all seasons," or even nowadays, in my resolve that I will only "marry at the front line of culture." The "beta" type of guy can be bad news not only personally, but also professionally, and I try my best never to deal with him. His jealousy, his insecurity, his pettiness, his narcissism, are almost always self-evident. And he's usually the one trying to criticize the alpha types. Spiritually and socially, it's best to keep one's standards high and to hold out for the very best. As a scholar, I theorize masculinity and femininity, but in the end, this is how it all comes home for me.

changed my LIFE

I'm a thirty year old, never married assistant manager in a sporting goods store. I've lived with a guy I really care about for the past four years. We talked in a general way about getting married some time in the future, but nothing ever seemed to happen with it. Last week he said he wants to think things over on his own and I found out he's interested in a twenty-two year old girl. I was devastated. I read in Alpha Male the advice on page 104. And my GOD he proposed to me (not her!)!! If this isn't the coolest book I don't know what is.

"You are a genius at everything but the human heart."

Not a great deal is known about Mileva Mari''s scientific contributions, since her husband, Albert Einstein, was careful to relegate her to the shadows. At twenty, the Serbian-born Mileva (known to her family and close associates as Mitza), attended the Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, where she excelled. She also befriended other young ladies who were determined to become professionals in their fields. Everything changed, however, when Mitza fell under the spell of her classmate, Albert Einstein.

"The Other Einstein" is Marie Benedict's fictional portrayal of the relationship between Mitza and Albert. At first, the two valued and admired one another; Mitza especially enjoyed the high-level intellectual discussions she had with Albert and his inner circle. Unfortunately, many obstacles kept the pair apart, including Albert's inability to find steady employment; parental disapproval; and Albert's self-centeredness and reluctance to make a commitment. The story is told from Mitza's perspective, and most readers will identify with the heroine's anguish at having been teased by classmates because of her pronounced limp; her desire to please her father, who pushed her to study for an advanced physics degree; and, when Albert ultimately convinced her to put him first, her frustration at sacrificing her own fulfillment to further her husband's ambitions.

Although Benedict bases this poignant novel on extensive research, she admits that her narrative is largely speculative; it is NOT history or biography. Still, the author effectively recreates the atmosphere in Switzerland, Serbia, and Germany during the late 1800s and early 1900s—a time of class-consciousness and snobbery; sexism; anti-Semitism; strict standards regarding proper behavior between courting couples; and exciting breakthroughs in various disciplines. Mitza's plight infuriates us, not just because she may have been denied credit for her ideas, but also because she tried, in vain, to be a proper wife to an egotistical and childlike husband. "The Other Einstein" is a heartrending account of a brilliant woman who wanted to do her duty, but instead sacrificed her soul.

Behind every great man is an even greater woman

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! One of my favorite book styles is to take a lesser known character or event from history and develop a story around it. I enjoy an in-depth researched story, whether it is fiction or non-fiction. The Other Einstein is historical fiction. Warning: if you are a major fan of Albert Einstein, he is not very appealing in this book. Actually, he is portrayed as quite an ass!

This book follows the life and career of Mileva Maric, who will eventually become Mrs. Einstein. She is a Serbian girl who has great skill in mathematics and physics. Her father encourages her education, partly because she was born with a limp and the family believes no one will marry her. With her father's help and encouragement, she is accepted at university in Zurich Switzerland. She lives in a pension with three other brilliant girls who are in the city to attend universities. She is the only female in her physics class and the professor does not hide his contempt. Mileva works hard and excels beyond her male peers. Albert Einstein is one of her classmates and he is clearly smitten with her. She resists at first because she wants to be taken seriously as a scholar and because she does not want to derail her education. Albert wears her down, despite the warnings of her best friend Helene. Also, Helene meets and eventually marries a man, thus breaking their pact to remain single and career focused.

Albert and Mileva have a wonderful courtship and he treats her as an intellectual equal. They work together. He also pressures her to adopt a Bohemian lifestyle. By Bohemian, he means have sex out of wedlock. She becomes pregnant and has a daughter. She is unable to graduate and does not earn her degree. At this point their relationship slowly disintegrates. Albert is unable to find work, partly due to his arrogant attitude. He refuses to meet his daughter and she dies very young. The death deeply affects Mileva. Albert later marries her, despite the opposition of his family and they have two sons. The relationship sours further.

The premise of this story is that Mileva is the one who actually discovered and articulated the Theory of Relativity while she was mourning for her daughter. Albert and Mileva co-write the paper, though he removes her name without her knowledge. He publishes all their work under his name and gives her no credit. He also becomes an increasingly bitter, nasty, egotistical, and vindictive man. Mileva wants a divorce, but that is not an easy thing in the early 1900's.

Mileva's real role in the Theory of Relativity is unknown. Among scientists and scholars, some believe she was a sounding board for Albert, others believe that she did the mathematical equations for his theories, and some believe she is the author. I enjoyed this book because I learned about science at the turn of the 20th century. I was enraged at the treatment of women, especially the way that intelligent women were belittled and looked upon with suspicion. There were several times when I was internally screaming at Mileva to grow a spine or at least bash Albert in the head with a book! In other words, the characters and the story evoked strong feelings for me. And that is a sign of a good book!

A deformed hip let Mileva pursue an education in a man’s field–physics right at the dawn of the 20th Century. In her cohort was the young Albert Einstein who takes an interest in Mileva from the get-go. While Mileva has made a pact with other girls to pursue science and live the life of a professional, Einstein continues his efforts to ingratiate himself. As feelings ripen, Mileva takes the BFF pact with the girls very seriously and flees to another University. When she gives up and returns to Switzerland, the girls and Einstein love finally triumphs. Until it doesn’t. She should have trusted her gut reactions. But, woman believe what the want in any day and age. (Been there myself, got the t-shirt and the divorce). Idealistic, sheltered. Sadly it often adds up to gullible and manipulable.

Since time began men have used smart women to advance their careers. In the early 20th Century it was considered a good move to marry the boss’s daughter or similar. After all, marriage made them “one.” Many a woman has contributed far, far more than we’ll ever know to a famous man’s career. Remember Harry Truman’s saying? “Behind every successful man is a proud wife and a surprised mother-in-law.” But in Albert Einstein’s early career it was an outraged wife and a surprised mother-in-law. But that outraged wife was savvy–way savvier than her using rat of a hubby.

This book is well written and believable. The author gives a full account of what is fact and what is fiction which helps. But even acknowledging that Mileva was very, very well educated and therefore would have come into contact with progressive views on women-probably even going so far as to read the early feminists. Add that Albert made the so-called Bohemian life seem so romantic (hardly the first time a man’s pulled that ruse, either be it a lifestyle on the extreme left or the extreme right), I found some of her outrage a bit too 21st Century. While, I doubt another woman was duped to the point of a Nobel Prize, I just think at that time and place she’d have gone on accepting the lies. The pleasant surprise was how she negotiated the end. Brilliant move.

But, did she really clearly see that Berlin saw East Europeans so badly then? Antisemitism was clearly present in Kaiser Wilhelm II’s reign and in his court, but the East European discrimination, I’m not sure. Finally, I found it very odd that she didn’t have at least a maid of all work.

In the end I did not like Milvena-she was full of herself. But if I disliked her, I loathed Albert Einstein.

It's a Wasserman book, of course it's good.

I love this book. We keep one copy in the bathroom and one by the coffee table. Gorgeous art and good conversation pieces. James' descriptions are also thought provoking and insightful regarding esoteric studies; however, I would recommend this book on the interesting art alone.

The only dieting book you need. Period.

If you're like me and you have tried countless ways of slimming your waistline, you need an "umbrella book" that explains WHY some programs work and some don't. I honestly believe that this ebook could have prevented many frustrated attempts at dieting. I loved getting definite answers to questions like "what's more important for losing weight - dieting or exercise?" and "what do I do when I get cravings?"

This guide doesn't prohibit certain foods, which other guides do. It serves to educate you and helps you to slowly eliminate and replace ingredients, at your own pace. I loved the restaurant guide with suggestions for visits to Greek, Thai, Mexican and other restaurants. A complete dieting book at a price that is an absolute steal.

I really liked the Smart Diet principle. I think this is one of the most convenient ways to lose weight. Unlike other weight
loss methods, Smart Diet is for the long term and does not necessarily relies on will power that punishes dieters who are into popular diet programs. And the book goes into detail what are the right foods and beverages to select, what specific foods to avoid (also in a particular restaurant). What I like about the book is that it provides a list of alternatives, for example, for the foods loaded with deadly fats, high calories and sugar.

The recipe section of the book is a huge bonus. I think it can be made into a separate book. That great list of healthy recipes really added a lot of value to the book. Awesome book!

I was surprised by how relevant this book was to my life. It helps you find the simple changes you can make in your lifestyle to achieve the results you want. It does not have to be as complicated as the the experts suggest.
