Margaret Ursula Mee, (born 22 May 1909 - 30 November 1988) was a British botanical artist who specialized in plants from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. She was also one of the first environmentalists to draw attention to the impact of large-scale mining and deforestation on the Amazon Basin. She studied art at St. Martin's School of Art, London. In 1950 she attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where she learnt her style of illustration, and received a national diploma in painting and design in 1950. She moved to Brazil with Greville Mee, in 1952 to teach art in the British school of S�o Paulo. Her first expedition was in 1956 to Bel�m in the Amazon Basin. She then became a botanical artist for S�o Paulo's Instituto de Botanica in 1958, exploring the rainforest and more specifically Amazonas state from 1964, painting the plants she saw, some new to science, as well as collecting some for later illustration. She created 400 folios of gouache illustrations, 40 sketchbooks, and 15 diaries.

English artist's Brazilian Amazon adventures!

Beautiful botanical paintings created by Margaret Mee embellish her wonderful account of life in Brazil's Amazon. Photographs and text add to the reader's enjoyment of this endangered area of our world. Her scientific, yet sensitive paintings of Amazonian flora are truly remarkable. Her artwork is breathtaking and helps the reader learn about the beauty to be found in this jungle. Her work documents more reasons to save the endangered Amazon for now and for future generations.

Of Orchids, Anacondas, and an Intrepid Artist for Amazon Lovers

Margaret Mee's "In Search of Flowers of the Amazon Forests: Diaries of An English Artist Reveal the Beauty of the Vanishing Rainforest" is not a title that comes trippingly off the tongue. This book, however, lives up to the promise of artistry and adventure.
ARTISTRY: There are 134 colored paintings and sketches of over 100 species of Amazon plants. About half are of orchids. Surely rarely before and possibly rarely since have orchids been rendered so brilliantly, their growth habit, structures, and colors shown with such botanic illustration precision and such a sense of place. Mee's paintings of bromeliads, of trees, and of Amazonian animals are as skilled and as beautiful. Here's a coatimundi, profile left, ring-tail slightly raised; there and there and there are birds, including sketches almost on the wing. The full-page paintings bring in the depth of the forests and jungles, some achieved through the exacting technique of painting in the spaces between entangled trees to define the trunks & branches. The heat, rainfall, squelchy mud, decaying branches are almost palpable.
This is not your close-up of the perfect rose, like the admirable Redoubte to whom Mee is compared in artistry. Suggestible readers may start scratching their pium bites.
ADVENTURE: A Campbell's Kid, a plump dumpling, Margaret grew to be slender as a dancer, elegantly beautiful as a Virginia Woolf, and a wild child. She stayed up to the last minute in Nazi Germany as a political activist, worked throughout World War II where bombs were falling, and then threw her passions into developing the highest level of skills in composition, coloration, and renderings from life. At 47, living in Brazil with her artist-husband, Greville, she began the first of unguided journeys through the Amazon Basin. From 1956 through 1988, Mee completed 18 collecting & painting expeditions, each several months' long. She went higher up, farther back, and deeper in, living catch-as-catch-can, usually soaked, continually bitten by the nasty pium flies, and returning with the treasures of these paintings.
WHAT ELSE A READER CAN EXPECT: Mee's writing style is under-stated and servicable. Facing a full page portrait of a Catasetum orchid,(pale green flowers lightly speckled with cinnamon & clustered on a drooping stem like a dissolute hyacinth), she writes
"Yon, another Indian Boy, Bernardino and I paddled in his father's canoe along a narrow igarape. It was partly open to the sky and was marvellously free of pium and other insect pests, apart from ants in every plant and tree...We spent the whole morning in an igapo where the boys told me of the time when their families were lost here for three days with nothing to eat, sleeping in the trees at night. "The young survive without food but the old ones die," observed Yon." (p. 156-158)
The drawings show the devastation over the years of her voyages; the text describes the loss of this habitat, Edenic on her first journey and on her last, almost unrecognizably industrial. Mee's paintings and stories helped galvanize efforts to protect and preserve what could be saved, writes HRH, the Duke of Edinburgh, in the first of several laudatory prefaces.
These add context, yet what I love about this treasure of a book are photographs. Here's wild-haired Margaret (who sported an apparently uncombed mane to her waist) with her friend, Rita, bright-eyed before another spikey bromeliad, or surrounded with the small women and children, the handsome men of the river villages or in a dugout, sharing with us the river shimmering gold at sunset. I like travelling with her, and am grateful that she gave us so much of where she arduously went.
READERS ALERTS? First, to be clear, this book is not an autobiography nor a biography: it tells the stories of her expeditions. There is a good but short biography of Margaret with photos included in the introductory material.
Second, there is a puzzlement. Mee's paintings while sumptuously reproduced on high quality paper in this large format book sometimes show greens that seem grayed or faded, compared to a few of the same species, such as the heliconias, seen in the tropical light where I live. Perhaps accurate for the deep rainforest light, perhaps the original greens have faded slightly, perhaps different environmental conditions systematically affect greens?
This is minor, however. The book has every amenity: large detailed maps for the rivers of each journey, a species index showing on which page each painting or sketch is found, stunning color photographs, a full & detailed glossary (an igapo, for instance, is a forest flooded naturally by the rising water), and recommendations for further reading on early travel & natural history of the Amazon, and readings on more current natural history.
OVERALL: This 1988 hard-cover book is an amazing value at used book prices. My first copy bought in 1988 and the used copy I just got (at less than $2 with a beautiful dust-jacket picture of a Clusia) are both in pristine condition. Readers who love superb botanical paintings, travellers' tales, undaunted women explorers, and texts helping recreate a vanishing world will not be disappointed.
Mee was to the Amazon and its plants what Audubon was to the birds of North America. Enjoy!

A "must have" for artists, botanists, travelers and the curious.

This book has become the most intrinsically valuable book in my treasure of botanical books. Along with all the beautiful plates are Mee's drawings dotting every page of this journal referencing the plant life, including dozens of bromeliads, orchids, trees, plants heretofore undiscovered. The diary itself is a treasure, her writing is as beautiful and unadorned of inessentials as are her paintings and drawings. Her writings document in detail each trip. She traveled on rickety planes, canoes, came down with a long lasting malaria. Nothing deterred her determination. This is strong and focused individual and these diaries document it all without self promotion. This is an old edition but it a true find. The diaries document her travels in the Amazon from 1956 to 1988, covering the 15 trips she made into the jungles. It's filled with photographs of the people she met, traveled with and the environs. So completely informative of the the kingdom of tropical plant life, the environment in which they developed and preside along with the human culture that followed. Fortunately for us it was also written before a lot of the Amazon was being savagely destroyed by money hungry developers.
