Chapter 1

Mackenzie "Mickey" Williams was having a dream-her favorite one. In it, she was showing her very first collection under the tents at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week. The lights flashed and the music pulsed as supermodels strutted down the runway dressed in her elaborate, colorful designs. There was Gigi Hadid, wearing a black-velvet strapless jumpsuit and gold fringed poncho! There was Kendall Jenner, posing in a sapphire-blue pleather romper! There was Karlie Kloss, looking fierce in a red neoprene minidress and matching scuba jacket!

As each look appeared onstage, the crowd of celebrities and fashion magazine editors oohed and aahed and applauded enthusiastically. At the end of the show, Mickey walked down the runway and bowed dramatically as the crowd leaped to their feet and cheered.

Backstage, Mickey was suddenly mobbed by models, fans, and press, all eager to tell her how much they loved her collection. They handed her bouquets of roses, so many she couldn't hold them all in her arms.

"Mickey, darling, you have outdone yourself!" gushed Vogue editor Anna Wintour. "What a stellar debut!"

"Aww, it was nothing," Mickey replied in her dream.

"Oh, but it is!" Legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld reached over to shake her hand. He was wearing his sunglasses as always, and his snowy white hair was pulled back in a ponytail. "It's divine."

"Oh, Karl, that means so much to me coming from you!" Mickey exclaimed. "You're one of my idols."

"Who's Karl?" A high-pitched, nasal voice shattered the beautiful moment. "Mackenzie, do you know it's seven forty-five? You're going to miss the school bus."

Mickey bolted up in bed. "Aunt Olive, I was talking to Karl Lagerfeld!" She moaned, stretching her hands over her head. "You know, the head designer for the House of Chanel? It was the best dream ever."

Her aunt handed her a glass of green sludge. "Have your kale shake. It'll wake you right up."

"I don't wanna wake up." Mickey groaned. "I want to go back to my dream. I wish it was true."

Olive patted her on the arm. "Well, if you keep wowing them at that fashion school of yours, it'll happen one day. But not if you're late!"

Mickey made the bus with only seconds to spare. She settled into a seat and rested her head against the cold glass window, watching as the city streets whizzed by. Her first day at the Fashion Academy of Brooklyn-a.k.a. FAB-seemed like a lifetime ago. But it had been just five months since she left her mom and best friend, Annabelle, in Philly and moved in with Aunt Olive in NYC so she could attend the middle school for budding fashion designers.

It wasn't easy. Besides Mickey missing her mom and friend terribly, in the beginning, nobody at FAB quite "got" her fashion sense. She thought it was perfectly acceptable to mix clashing patterns, sew lace on a leather motorcycle jacket, wear two different-colored shoes, or streak her hair with colored chalk. It was exciting and innovative, and if there was one thing Mickey loved, it was thinking outside the box.

Ever since she was a little girl, she had created one-of-a-kind outfits for her dolls and, later, for herself. For five dollars at the flea market, she could find a sad, abandoned old dress, riddled with stains or holes, and transform it into something chic, sleek, and unique. She felt like a fashion superhero with magical powers!

According to Mickey, fashion was all about forging your own vision and not letting anyone dictate your personal style. "Whatever you wear," she'd instructed her friend Annabelle over winter break, "you should make it your own."

"Bella Thorne says pastel is in for spring," Annabelle had pointed out, waving a Teen Vogue in Mickey's face.

"Boring...and predictable," Mickey said, glancing at the photo of the fashionista in a buttercup-yellow sweater and white jeans. "I'd cut that sweater into a crop top and pair it with something graphic-like an ikat-print wrap skirt."

Annabelle looked confused. "What's an ikat? Is that like an iPad?"

Mickey giggled. When it came to fashion lingo, Anna was kind of clueless. "It's a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles," she explained to her friend.

Annabelle shook her head. "I still don't get it. But I'm sure if you designed for Bella, she'd look amazing."

If only! Mickey desperately wanted to have her own fashion label one day, one that stars begged to wear on the red carpet. It was the reason she'd jumped at the chance to attend FAB, even if her mom hadn't been enthusiastic about the idea.

"You're eleven," her mother had protested when the acceptance letter came. "I don't know how I feel about you living in New York City."

"It's not like I'll be living on Jupiter," Mickey had pointed out. "It's just a train ride away and I'll come home every weekend. Besides, I'll be staying with Aunt Olive."

Her mom's sister wasn't an easy egg to crack, but Mickey had won her over-and even helped her come out of her shell. Aunt Olive had recently traded in her severe business suits and sensible shoes for a purple wool trapeze jacket and leather boots.

"You like it?" she'd asked Mickey as she modeled it in their living room.

"It's so cool." Mickey applauded her. "The color is very bold and regal, and those boots are fierce."

"Is that good?" Olive asked, scratching her head. "Do I want to be fierce?"

"You do!" Mickey chuckled. "Especially in the workplace. You want to show your bosses you're not afraid of hard work. You can handle anything."

"And my clothes say that?"

"They speak volumes," Mickey assured her. "That's what's so incredible about fashion. It can talk for you and about you."

"Well, then," Olive said, checking her look one more time in the mirror. "My look is saying, ‘Olive, better get a move on! You've got a legal brief due in less than an hour!'"

The students at FAB were a whole other story. When an assignment called for an original design for a World Hunger T-shirt, of course Mickey decided to adorn hers with real food. The only problem was that it spoiled overnight.

"They think I'm a freak," she had complained during her first weeks to her one confidant, JC. He knew a thing or two about how to navigate the social scene at FAB. He was a year older and a seventh-grader, not to mention a brilliant designer of canine couture.

"Well, you do smell like cabbage," he pointed out. "And your hair looks like you dipped it in creamed spinach."

"I thought everyone at FAB would be creative and edgy," Mickey said with a sigh. "I've always had my own sense of style. I thought here it would be welcome."

JC nodded. "I get it. You like to stand out. But this"-he pointed to her neon-yellow combat boots and green-plaid leggings with ripped knees-"this might be taking it a bit too far. Unless you're Lady Gaga, that is."

He gave her an extreme makeover so that the kids at FAB wouldn't be so distracted by her outward appearance that they couldn't appreciate her talent.

He instructed her to wash the green highlights out of her hair, then gave her a new name (Kenzie Wills), a new identity (daughter of a famous Finnish designer), and a streamlined new look. "Less is more," he taught her. "No more hair chalk highlights. Lose the neon sneakers and ditch the crazy hats."

As Kenzie, Mickey's popularity soared. Even Jade Lee, the school's reigning queen bee, was curious. Mickey loved the attention and the acceptance, but hated pretending to be someone she wasn't. When she was chosen as a finalist for FAB's first-semester Runway Showdown, her mission was clear: "I gotta be me!" Her Cinderella-inspired ball gown with a rainbow tulle underlayer stopped the show.

So here she was at the start of her second semester, back to being just Mickey. Thanks to the Showdown, she'd finally earned respect for her designs-even if she did come in second place to Jade.

Jade held court in the FAB hallway every morning. Mickey had to admit that the girl was chic. Today, she wore a petal-pink, long-sleeved DVF wrap dress and knee-high suede boots, and her long, shiny black hair was swept back into a rhinestone headband. She could have easily stepped out of the pages of a magazine-a walking, talking mannequin! Did she ever have a bad hair day? Were her clothes ever wrinkled?

Her twin brother, Jake, was equally dapper. Mickey noted his red Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater and the black Prada messenger bag slung over his shoulder. Of course, it didn't hurt that their mother was Bridget Lee, designer to Hollywood's biggest stars. Thanks to Mommy, the duo not only got to wear any designer duds their hearts desired, but also had unlimited access to the red carpet and got to rub elbows with celebrities. When she was watching Extra with Aunt Olive, Mickey was sure she had spotted Jade looming behind Jennifer Lawrence at an NYC movie. Of course she was! Her mom had designed JLaw's stunning silver lam� gown.

Jade shot Mickey a dirty look as she passed by. "You know what they say about second place," she said loudly so Mickey wouldn't miss a word. "It's the first one to lose." Though several weeks and winter break has passed since that day, Jade was never going to let Mickey live down the fact that she'd lost to her at the Runway Showdown.

Let her gloat, Mickey thought to herself. Winning isn't everything. She had learned a lot about herself in creating that collection and was even featured on a famous fashion blogger's site. So what if Jade beat her? There would be many more fashion challenges and chances to show Jade-and all of FAB-that she was a fashion force to be reckoned with.

"Don't pay any attention to her." Mickey's classmate South East ran to catch up with her. "She's just sore that your collection rocked." At least South was on her side!

"So," her friend continued, "do I call you Mickey or Kenzie? I think it's cool you have two names. You know musicians change theirs all the time-like Diddy was once Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and before that Sean Combs."

Mickey nodded. "I'm just Mickey. Kenzie Wills will be the name of my design house."

"Cool," South replied, then quickly changed the subject. "Did you have a great winter break? I did! My dad took me to Hollywood where he's recording his new album. We hung out with J. T. and Pharrell-"

Mickey cut her off. She knew if she didn't, South would chew her ear off with endless stories of her fabulous rap-star dad Laser East. Mickey was anxious to get to class and see what Mr. Kaye had up his sleeve today for them to design.

"Yeah, break was fun. Lots of time back home in Philly with the family. Gotta go!" she said. "See you in Apparel Arts!"

Really Good Series!!

Runway Ready is the second book of the Fashion Academy series. Mickey has to design a dress for a special client who is 5 years old and her grandmother is a fashion legend, Victoria Vanderweil. Cordy is the special girl who is a little out of control but knows what she wants her dress to look like for her 5th birthday party. As Cordy likes Mickey's dress the most, Mickey gets the chance to babysit her during a fashion show that ends in disaster and Mickey off the chance to have her wearing the dress. As Mickey sneaks into the party and somehow manages to teach Cordy a life lesson that will make Victoria glad that she sneaked in, it all ends with a perfect ending made for a budding fashion designer!!

Even though this is the second book in the series, it is easy to get into what is going on. I also love the fact that a mother-daughter team is writing these cute but fun books and since Carrie is just a tween herself and can relate on what is going on in the books! I can see great things coming for this dynamic duo and I'm looking forward to seeing what is next!!

Quick, fun romp through Fashion Week

About the Author
DR. RAINER HILZINGER former Chief Technology Officer and Development Director at VACUUMSCHMELZE, is a Member of the American Physical Society and the German Physical Society. He has published more than 65 scientific publications and is the holder of a number of patents. He was awarded the Georg-Sachs-Prize by the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) in 1983. Under his direction, many new materials have been developed and brought into commercial application.

DR. WERNER RODEWALD former Head of Fundamental Research and Development of Rare-Earth permanent magnet materials at VACUUMSCHMELZE, is also a Member of the German Physical Society. Until 2005, he was member of the IEC Technical Committee TC68-WG5, which compiles standards and measuring methods for permanent magnets. In addition, he has managed national and international projects with partners from universities and industry and has published many technical articles.

Great Reference for Anyone Working with Magnetics

This is a great book about magnetic materials. It is a must for anyone using them as a matter of their work. The technical discussions are very readable and comprehensive. There is an excellent section on definitions which I found exceptionally useful. The latter part of the books does discuss the materials used by the company for whom the authors are employed but the materials is exceptionally useful. This is a great handbook for anyone working with magnetic materials.

If you're thinking about disappering....

....this book is a start. I don't think it gives you all of the tools that you will need. As you will learn through reading the book, there are several instances of mere chance where a person was given the opportunity to disappear and took advantage of it. However, some of the tools they give you will help a lot. An interesting read but there are books that will help you out more. Use this as a guide to find more resources.

On of the very best books I have read on this warrior (Kokoro Yoga) art. If you are seeking to be a warrior this book is for you

First off, I have to say that this is a fantastic (Kokoro Yoga: Maximize your human potential and develop the spirt of a warrior by Mark Divine and Catherine Divine) book. As a lifetime student (and teacher) of numerous martial art systems (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Target focus Training, Combatives) I am always seeing unique and innovative physical fitness routines.

Even though I am a senior in my 70s I have always lived my life as a warrior seeking out challenging fitness programs such as U.S. NAVY SEAL workouts, WOD programs, Circuit programs and numerous other routines to challenge the body and mind. When I saw this book on Amazon I had to have it and I just finished reading this 267 Soft Cover book. I love this book for a lot of reasons. For one thing his life time interest and search for Bushido, the way of the warrior is something I can relate to in my own life. My lifelong interest in developing my mind, body and spirit has been continuing journey. Like the author, I was in the U.S. Navy but unlike him I never became a U.S. Navy SEAL.

Yoga was one of the exercise and meditation arts I have always had in my exercise routines and this book really reinforced my interest in this warrior art. This great book is filled with incredible information and detailed advice on numerous warrior spirit (Kokoro) fitness programs. I was amazed at how my own personal every day fitness routine very closely matched some of the ones in this book. Besides a rugged WOD HIIT workout, I always end my workout with more than 50 Yoga postures (asanas) of which most are shown in this fantastic book.

This excellent volume is organized into 8 detailed chapters. The first chapter covers the author’s personal experience explaining how he became a U.S. Navy SEAL, and how his journey began with his study of Seido Karate and many other warrior arts. He also explains the various types of Yoga he has studied. The second chapter (The Pursuit of Maximum Human Potential) goes into detail on the philosophy and practice of Yoga. The third chapter explores the strategies of Kokoro Yoga. Tactics involved in the practice of warrior arts are covered in chapter four. Chapter five explains “Core and supporting sequences." The various poses and movements are covered in chapter six. Chapter seven focuses on the “Physiological and psychological benefits of Yoga.” The final chapter gives advice on “developing a personal practice." Do not pass on the Appendix sections because they have a lot of valuable information.

This short review cannot do justice to the many positives things you will learn reading this book. If you are seeking a guide to achieve the ultimate in warrior fitness of mind, body and spirit this book is for you. I have created my own daily fitness routine combining the movements and exercises shown in this book. I really loved this book.

Don't know what I expected. I know Mark is a Retired Seal and that is beyond awesome. However throughout the book he reminds us over and over about his exploits and training. A short bio would have been great but seriously the book about the Yoga itself was maybe half the book. Oh well.

Traditional yoga with a warrior twist by a former Navy SEAL / the founder of SEALfit

Like many yoga practitioners, I’m never sure whether to be dismayed, amused, or pleased by the explosion of new styles of yoga. It’s nothing new. Yoga has been branching out since its early days. But today’s flavors tend toward the frivolous, usually involve shoving yoga together with something else generally likable, and said two things are in some cases largely inconsistent. There’s marijuana yoga, dog yoga, karaoke yoga, and tantrum yoga. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Häagen-Dazs Yoga. Hell, if I was a bit less lazy and more unscrupulous I’d have made a mint from my patented SELFIE YOGA (™ -pending), which involves modifying impressive looking poses so that an individual can take their own pics for FaceBook. (You’re welcome; to whomever the driven sleeze-bag is that turns that idea into a thing.)

I, therefore, tend to approach books like Mark Divine’s “Kokoro Yoga” with a measure of skepticism. That said, I found that this book offered a respectable vision of yoga that might even succeed in bringing a new demographic into the fold. Divine is a former Navy SEAL who developed a fitness empire called SEALFIT, a system that combines fitness ideas from the famous Special Operations unit with ideas from civilian sports and exercise science, such as high intensity interval training (HIIT.)

Incidentally, “kokoro” is the Japanese word for heart / mind (heart and mind were inexorably entwined for Japanese in the era in which the term came into being.) Divine mentions that “Warrior Yoga” would have been his first choice, but that was already taken. The author appeals to warriors with this approach to yoga. He does this in several ways. Firstly, and encouragingly, he doesn’t neglect the mind, but rather puts it front and center by emphasizing the need for mental strength and clarity. My biggest problem with the plethora of new yogas is that they usually forget that it’s ultimately about calming the mind, and instead of providing an environment conducive to looking inward, they embrace or create all sorts of distractions (loud pop music, mirrors everywhere, nudity, animals, ice cream, circus clowns, etc.) Divine doesn’t just make a new fitness fad, he argues for the need for all of the eight limbs of yoga—not neglecting yama and niyama—and emphasizes how yoga served as a calming and clarifying tool for him and not just as a means to be more bendy.

Second, he adds components to balance out the dimensions of fitness. If you are a yogi / yogini, and you want a yoga body; yoga is all you need. However, if you are a martial artist, cop, or soldier, you also need strength, speed (then, by definition, power), and cardiovascular endurance, as well as those aspects yoga offers (e.g. breath control, flexibility, core strength, posture, and mental clarity.) Again, I’m often dismayed by attempts to round out yoga with functional strength building and cardiovascular endurance. I understand the desire to combine them into one workout. Besides the fact that some people need a more balanced approach to fitness, not everybody has time to do multiple workouts multiple times a day. Still, one can’t just ram these components together willy-nilly because if one needs to be in a space to observe one’s breath while being still and one is coming out of having done 100 burpees, it’s probably not going to work so well. I haven’t yet done any of the sequences from the book, but it looks like this shouldn’t a problem, at least not for individuals who are moderately fit. I’m less confident about the value of mixing in elements of chi gong and “cardio kickboxing,” which is suggested by the system. It’s certainly not that I’m opposed to either chi gong or functional martial arts training, but there’s a lot of important detail in those activities and this format risks some horrible half-assery. (Yes, sometimes you get chocolate in peanut butter and get a Reese’s cup, but more often you get sausage in the pudding. Two things being great, by no means ensures they will be great together.)

Finally, Divine puts his approach in the language of soldiers, using concepts like “strategy” and “tactics” and eschewing Sanskrit terminology. The book begins with an anecdote about going into a combat zone as a Reserve officer, which describes his use of yoga to help him get his mind in the right place. He also talks extensively about his practice of martial arts.

There are eight chapters and three appendices to the book. They proceed from the aforementioned story through a look at the general approach, looking at the eight limbs of yoga, before getting into the details. The penultimate chapter sums up research on some of the benefits of yoga, and the last chapter offers advice about how to set up one’s sadhana (personal practice) with the Kokoro Yoga approach in mind. The appendices offer information about functional conditioning exercises, combat conditioning, and module building.

Overall, I think this is a useful book that provides some interesting thoughts on yoga. You may or may not find that it’s the approach for you, but it’s worth checking out. The photos are well-done—though some readers may wish there were more related to the functional conditioning exercises (but he’s got other books for that, it seems.)

I’d recommend this book for those interested in how a yoga practice might be integrated with other aspects of fitness without losing track of the core yogic objectives.

This little book discusses the realms and abilities of the various gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. There are discussions of the powers of the gods as groups and stories of the gods as individuals. Some gods have their own special stories (for instance Kali), which are related herein.

This is not an encyclopedic work but is meant to be an introducton to the Hindu pantheon. It's a great value for its cost, and I can highly recommend it.

History and Fiction, All Rolled Up Into One Magnificent Story!

I became curious about reading this book after learning that the main character was somewhat designed after that of Temple Houston, Sam Houston's son. I had no expectations, and oh my - how delighted I was to discover this wonderful author! How can you go wrong with beautiful writing and an exciting story, set over a period of years where so many changes took place in this Oklahoma territory? It is a great story about a family of unforgettable characters, who move to a town in Oklahoma during the late 1800's. I highly recommend this book for those who are interested in this time period, and those that just love a great story.

This is more of a history book than one that will give you a strong understanding of the food retail industry in the UK. the book uses lots of generalties and buzz words in place of real analysis into core strategies of the retail chains in the UK.
