About the Author
Dr. Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Gitman is a prolific author who has more than 50 articles appearing in Financial Management, the Financial Review, the Journal of Financial Planning, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the Financial Services Review, the Journal of Financial Research, Financial Practice and Education, the Journal of Financial Education, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. Authors Gitman and Joehnk's INVESTMENT FUNDAMENTALS: A GUIDE TO BECOMING A KNOWLEDGEABLE INVESTOR was selected as one of 1988's ten best personal finance books by Money magazine. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as Vice President--Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Carl McDaniel is professor emeritus in service at the University of Texas-Arlington. He currently holds courses for the executive MBA program on the Fort Worth campus and in China. He was the chairman of the marketing department at UTA for 32 years. McDaniel's career spanned more than 40 years, during which he was the recipient of several awards for outstanding teaching. McDaniel has also been a district sales manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and served as a board member of the North Texas Higher Education Authority, a billion-dollar financial institution. In addition to MKTG, McDaniel has written and co-authored over 50 textbooks in marketing and business. McDaniel's research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and California Management Review. McDaniel is a member of the American Marketing Association. In addition to his academic experience, McDaniel has business experience as the co-owner of a marketing research firm. McDaniel has also served as senior consultant to the International Trade Centre (ITC), Geneva, Switzerland. The ITC's mission is to help developing nations increase their exports. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and his master's degree and doctorate from Arizona State University.

About the Author

Gail E. Tompkins is Professor Emerita at California State University, Fresno. Currently, she works with teachers in their kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms and leads staff-development programs on reading and writing. Dr. Tompkins was inducted into the California Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments in the field of reading, and she’s received the prestigious Provost’s award for Excellence in Teaching at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Tompkins is the author of six other books published by Pearson: Language Arts: Patterns of Practice, Language Arts Essentials, Teaching Writing: Balancing Process and Product, 50 Literacy Strategies, and two grade-specific versions of this text: Li teracy in the Early Grades: A Successful Start for PreK-4 Readers and Writers and Literacy in the Middle Grades: Teaching Reading and Writing to Fourth Through Eighth Graders. During the past three decades, Dr. Tompkins has also worked with kindergarten through college-level writing teachers at National Writing Project sites in California and Oklahoma.

Buy the 5th Ed (save money and hassle)

The book itself is a great resource, but I really regret buying new. The 6th edition has typos and is missing entire sections that were available in the 5th edition (of which our teacher references during class). It is not a matter of page numbers changing, but entire teaching methods in the compendium were removed (even though they are not outdated!) and a section on ESL parent connection is in the 5th ed. and not the 6th. It is a waste of money to buy this newer edition.

seems like it was designed for elementary students

Written in a wordy style that becomes very tedious to read. This book could have been half as long and half the price. Teachers are professionals and can be addressed as such. The kid handwriting fonts and random pictures of pigeons are silly and annoying.

"This book addresses the topic of the general nonlinear integer programming (NLIP). The overall goal of the book is to bring the state of the art of the theoretical foundations and solution methods of NLIP to readers who are interested in optimization, operations research and computer science. This book investigates the theory and solution methodologies for the general NLIP and provides the developments of the last 30 years. It is assumed that readers are familiar with linear integer programming and the book thus focuses on the theory and solution methodologies of NLIP. The following are some of the features of the book: \roster \item"$\bullet$" Duality theory for NLIP: Investigation into the relationship of the duality gap and the perturbation function has lead to the development of nonlinear Lagrangian theory, thus establishing a methodology for the solution of the NLIP. \item"$\bullet$" Convergent Lagrangian and cutting plane methods for NLIP: Concepts like the objective level cuts, objective contour cuts or the domain cut reshapes the perturbation function. This leads to the optimal solution to lie in the convex hull of the perturbation functions and thus guarantees a zero duality gap. \item"$\bullet$" Convexification scheme: Using the connection between monotonicity and convexity, convexification schemes are developed for monotone and non-convex integer programs, thus extending the reach of branch and bound methods. \item"$\bullet$" Solution framework using global descent: The optimal solution of an NLIP is sought from among the local minima. About the Author
W.H. Auden was born in 1907 and went to Oxford University, where he became Professor of Poetry from 1956 to 1960. After the publication of his Poems in 1930, he became the acknowledged leader of the 'thirties poets'. His poetic output was prolific, and he also wrote verse plays in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood, with whom he visited china. In 1946 he became a U.S. citizen. He died in 1973.

Just beginning to read the book, but so far every instance of the word modern I have come across is printed modem (kindle edition). Very disappointed. Whoever was the copy editor should be flogged.

All Greek to Me

The best part of this book is editor W.H. Auden's introduction. He writes so smoothly and effortlessly, and he's a great example of the benefits of a classical education in Greek and Latin. He also explains quite well that the Greeks liked to wrap the most simple thoughts in the most flourescent and complicated of sentences, whereas the moderns like to use simple syntax and diction to deliver powerful, complicated ideas. I'm much too modern, and had great difficulty going through this collection of essays, drama, and poetry.

About the Author

Sean-Philip Oriyano, CEH, CISSP, is an IT veteran with experience in the aerospace, defense, and cybersecurity industries. He has consulted and instructed on topics across the IT and cybersecurity fields for both small clients and large enterprises, and has taught at such locations as the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval War College. Sean is a member of the California State Military Reserve, where he serves as a warrant officer specializing in networking and security.

Okay book, could be better without the numerous mistakes

After seeing several people complain about EC-Council now quizzing people on v9 despite trainees still applying after following the v8 training, I decided to order this book (being a v8-trained myself).

The reviews for v8 of this book were mentioning a bunch of mistakes especially within training exam questions, sadly there still are a handful in this edition. Chapter 11 (the latest I have read) questions have TWO mistakes out of 20 questions (namely questions 12 and 17) and I have already seen a bunch of others previously (also considering the multiple-answers ones that are never stated as such)

Command-line examples are VERY often wrong (the hping3 one in chapter 11 is missing a target IP address, for example) and the heap-stack explanation is pretty poor (to be nice)

This being said, this book is still better than the awful EC-Council Official Curriculum. It's an easy read and most examples are OK, which makes the several errors even more problematic. Can't say if it will be good enough to pass the exam yet.

Good explanations, but problems with the practical part

Basically, it's a good book in terms of how concepts are explained. Whether it will be enough to pass the exam I can't say at this moment. However, as a beginner in this area I have some problems with the practical exercises. Many of them are generic, i.e. no concrete IP addresses are provided that can be used without running into legal issues. Also the appendix about building a lab doesn't say anything about what can be used to practice nmap scanning, for instance. Any help would be highly appreciated .
