Humankind is on the precipice of the apocalypse.

As the Demons grow bolder and the walls between the planes of existence weaken, Ember is forced to develop her powers as quickly as possible, and she seeks out a powerful earth Watcher to continue her supernatural lessons. Her glimpse of the future demands she fight the dark forces spreading across the earth.

But her new mentor has his own agenda, making her question everyone and everything she ever trusted.

When Ember is thrust into the world of the Watchers, she learns of their plans—ones that defy the scripture and make them enemies of the Celestial Host. Ridding the world of evil gets complicated when it becomes impossible to take sides.

As Ember struggles with morality, she soon discovers that there’s something more frightening than anything she’s faced before.

About the Author

You can visit Karen Ann Hopkins at her website: www.karenannhopkins.com.

Karen Ann Hopkins resides in northern Kentucky with her family on a farm that boasts a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. Karen's main job is home schooling the kids, but she finds time to give riding lessons, coach a youth equestrian drill team, and of course, write. She was inspired to create her first book, Temptation, by the Amish community she lived in. The experiential knowledge she gained through her interactions with her neighbors drove her to create the story of the star-crossed lovers, Rose and Noah.

Karen grew up about a mile from Lake Ontario in Upstate New York. She was bitten by the horse bug at the age of five, and after diligently taking riding lessons for several years, was rewarded with her first horse when she turned eleven. The feisty horse's name was Lady, a Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred cross, who became Karen's steadfast companion. Through the years, the constant force in her life was horses. Eventually, she found her place as a riding instructor herself. Before accepting her fate in the barnyard, she worked a short stint as a paralegal, traveled abroad, and guided tourists on horseback riding tours in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Karen is currently working on her Amish mystery series, Serenity's Plain Secrets, along with the YA paranormal/fantasy series, The Wings of War. Karen is also excited to announce the Temptation series has been optioned for TV by Pilgrim Studios and is available on Audible. More books in the Temptation series are in the works.

High Octane -- This Will Leave You Breathless!

The ending to Embers was explosive and I have been pretty excited to get this second book in my hand ever since November! Even so, I was a little fuzzy on the details, but a peruse of my review and the fact that Gaia starts right where we ended helped out so much.

This book series guys, it is SO good. The writing is well-done, the lore is fascinating and has its own twists and unique spins, and the story is uber-good. I don't know what it is about angel series set in wilderness, but they make me want to be an outdoors person. Which is ironic, because I am the opposite of an outdoors person.

That aside, this book has a LOT of stuff happening. The world is coming to an end, so of course Embers and her rag-tag team have to save it. This book starts off with so much action, and it never really lets up. You are constantly at the edge of your seat, just wondering what is going to happen next. I love the adrenaline pumping that these pages induced.

Embers is a great character and she continues to grow in her personality and her powers throughout this second book. And I loved/hated all the people in the book. I felt like I was giving everyone side-eye, just waiting for them to be untrustworthy. This book is all about the grey in the world of black and white, right and wrong.

I LOVED that two people we only briefly meet in Embers, best friend Piper and Ember's brother are more prominent in this story. Hopkins did a great job of fleshing out these side characters and bringing them into the fold. Sawyer, the other perspective of this story, still has an air of mystery, even though his care for Embers is apparent. Of the two, I definitely loved reading through Embers eyes. She's just a really fun, interesting person.

If you thought (or I guess, if I thought) Embers had a crazy end, this one just kinda blows everything away. It's left me with that "hurry up and wait" feeling... I can't stop reading and I have to hurry through the pages only to have to wait FOR-EV-VER for the next part of the story.

Embers and Gaia's stories match the true beauty of their covers and I absolutely cannot wait for more of this epic series.

Its not too late to catch up, be sure to grab a copy of Embers immediately!
By Paula M. @ Her Book Thoughts!
I mentioned in my review of Embers that it was one of the best Angel/Demons book that I have ever read and I still stand by that statement. Embers left me wanting for more that's why my hands was itching to hold and read the sequel. Like with every series that I love, I was afraid that Gaia will suffer from Second Book Syndrome. But Gaia did not disappoint, in fact, it even surpassed my expectations.

If you're like me and you admired Ember so much in the first book, you'll love her even more here. She is straight up badass and her character growth is just superbly shown. You will really see her maturity. She was a kid who learned about Angels and Demons and Watchers in EMBERS and she have no idea what to do with all of those information, but here in GAIA, she's a woman with a mission. A mission that she can't afford to fail.

Secondary characters really shined in here too like Sawyer, Ivan and Piper. Sawyer was phenomenal! He's not here to please you and if you think Ember is badass.... then Sawyer is the master of all badasses. This guy knows how to make a girl's heart melt, but he also knows how to make them scream from terror. We already learned that Sawyer is a demon from the first book but I feel like there's still A LOT to know about him. Even Piper and Ivan showed what they're capable of. I love how Hopkins made them more than props. They actually have a part in the whole story and how they helped our main character was just incredible!

Gaia is an explosion! Just when I thought Hopkins couldn't do anything that will caught me off guard, she surprised me with a sequel like this! Truly, Hopkins is one of the best authors in this generation and I'm just incredibly happy that I get to experience her brilliance! Its not too late to catch up, be sure to grab a copy of Embers immediately!

ended and I really liked that. These books are action packed and filled ...
By Darcus Murray
Gaia is the second book in the Wings of War series by Karen Ann Hopkins. The book takes off immediately where Embers, the first book, ended and I really liked that. These books are action packed and filled with content. By starting the book off exactly where the other stopped, it allows ou to continue the story without skipping a beat, especially if you're reading the books back to back like I did.

In Embers we discovered the world of watchers and demons but, in Gaia, we're thrown headfirst into the deep end of the watcher world with the introduction of Insepth, Ember's new mentor. Being surrounded by watchers seems the perfect place for Ember but we quickly learn that everyone has their own secrets and that not everyone is who they say - or think - they are.

Aside from Insepth, we meet a lot of new people in Gaia. A mansion full of watchers, angels, demons, growlers, humans. We even get to spend more time with Piper and learn the greater role that she plays in Embers life, something that I had been curious about since the beginning of book one.

This book was filled with a lot of heart and a lot of pain and an insane amount of action. Gaia is full of battle, power, games and struggle. Ember learns a lot more about herself in this book and finally discovers what she is fully capable of. She's being taught a ton of new things by her mentor but she's also forced into a lot more.

Where Embers was about a human girl entering a supernatural world, Gaia was about a powerful supernatural being leaving the world of humanity behind and embracing the things that make her powerful.

Gaia was a great book and I can't wait to see how all hell breaks loose in the next installment.

Character: Sawyer.
Rating: 4 Stars.

Into the Maelstrom: Music, Improvisation and the Dream of Freedom: Before 1970, by David Toop

In this first installment of acclaimed music writer David Toop's interdisciplinary and sweeping overview of free improvisation, Into the Maelstrom: Music, Improvisation and the Dream of Freedom: Before 1970 introduces the philosophy and practice of improvisation (both musical and otherwise) within the historical context of the post-World War II era. Neither strictly chronological, or exclusively a history, Into the Maelstrom investigates a wide range of improvisational tendencies: from surrealist automatism to stream-of-consciousness in literature and vocalization; from the free music of Percy Grainger to the free improvising groups emerging out of the early 1960s (Group Ongaku, Nuova Consonanza, MEV, AMM, the Spontaneous Music Ensemble); and from free jazz to the strands of free improvisation that sought to distance itself from jazz. In exploring the diverse ways in which spontaneity became a core value in the early twentieth century as well as free improvisation's connection to both 1960s rock (The Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd) and the era of post-Cagean indeterminacy in composition, Toop provides a definitive and all-encompassing exploration of free improvisation up to 1970, ending with the late 1960s international developments of free music from Roscoe Mitchell in Chicago, Peter Brtzmann in Berlin and Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg in Amsterdam.

Review

“This is a long overdue book, and there is no-one else who could have written it. It is an astonishing achievement, and a highly readable and enjoyable one too.” – International Times

“Any discussion of free improvisation, as an essential (anti?)-discipline of creative music, is an amusing balance between considering an unruly child and a sacred cow. History has come into a wild favor towards a genre that perpetually defies definition and prediction. David Toop, with a critical facility informed by over forty years of activity on and off the bandstand, sets his ruminations in the service of the music. Essaying on free improvisation in the mode of composition can result in didactic chin scratch. Thankfully Toop engages the readers interest with a sentient breath of prose charged by academic insight where poetic space becomes the page. It's only the beginning.” – Thurston Moore

“David Toop has dived into the Maelstrom that is the genesis of improvised music and come up with a string of pearls. There is so much here that will be new to even those of us who thought we knew the subject. A remarkable piece of real scholarship that relies on painstaking research with a refreshing absence of jargon.” – Evan Parker

“Into the Maelstrom gives an astonishing, vivid history of improvised music across the 20th century before 1970, tracing its transnational criss-crossings, trans-arts contagions, the folds between Cream and AMM, 'musicking' and John Stevens' Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Nuova Consonanza and For a Few Dollars More. David Toop's panoramic account makes obvious how urgently we have needed this alternative history, attuned to musical sounds as they resonate with artistic, cultural and political currents. A landmark book, Into the Maelstrom re-centres those vast and auspicious margins deserted by previous music histories.” – Georgina Born, Professor of Music and Anthropology, University of Oxford, UK

About the Author
David Toop is a writer, musician and curator. His books include Ocean of Sound, Haunted Weather and Sinister Resonance. He is Professor of Audio Culture and Improvisation at University of the Arts London, UK.

The premise of the book clearly distinguishes the difference between the thinking of the rich and the poor. In essence, the only limitation between you and the rich is in your own mind, and achieving success lies in breaking these walls. You can't just graduate and leave formal education and expect yourself to be financially well equipped. Many people think that having a good education is sufficient to the roads to acquire new wealth , well they can't be any more wrong! It is having the mindset of the wealthy that will make you rich. That is why many lotto winners who becomes instant millionaires loses most of their money because they don't have the proper mindset to maintain or grow their money. You’ll discover why some of your money beliefs might be wrong and that could be holding you back , you need to consider what are the principles and what behaviors the rich have , that you do not have (Yet ) Laura Maya takes this idea and breaks it into twelve chapters. You wouldn’t find a recipe to turn rich overnight. Rather, the book provides a solid foundation for setting the psychological stage for strong financial habits. Another feature of They don’t teach you how to get rich at school is the anecdotal references in the book. Laura likes to use lots of anecdotes to illustrate her points and she is quite good at it. For me, I found these references very apt to my observations in life.

Nice Book!
By Paula
This book was comprehensive, crisp, and easy to read. And by “easy” I mean this book provides sound information on the importance of money. It clearly distinguishes the difference between the thinking of the rich and the poor. The biggest revelation for me was that the author is right! They never taught me how to be rich at school. There was no subject about financial planning, or making money, or for that matter how to save money. I was stuck at algebra, arts and science . The book provides real-life examples to reprogram your thinking to that of the rich and wealthy. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to achieve their financial freedom.

Magnificent Read!
By Joseph
I am living a comfortable life – all my debts are paid, I don’t carry a credit card debt, and I do a good 9-6 job. Yet, I feel I can do better. I often see people around me – happy yet fulfilled. Exploring the unchartered waters, I tried my hands on this book. It changed my perspective of financial freedom, which I thought was limited to a 9-6 job. As a kid, I have been told that getting good grades and a good job is the ladder to financial freedom. It’s a sham. Everything boils down to your financial deci.

The red wedding, by Alessandra Oddi Baglioni

While the Doges in Venice and The Borgias in Rome dominated the political and religious scene, Perugia was becoming the heart of the Renaissance art in Italy.
The famous painter Raphael with one of his most famous paintings, "the Baglioni Entombment" portrays someof the protagonists of this novel in this painting of 1507. Atalanta Baglioni commissioned this painting after a cruel event: “The red wedding” which occurred in August 1500 in Perugia between Astorre Baglioni and Lavinia Colonna. During the celebration, a fratricidal conspiracy led to death several members of Baglioni family.
Love and death, revenge and political intrigues are just a few of the elements of the book, which are splendidly written in a vivid and lively style by Alessandra Oddi Baglioni, who is a direct descendant of the Baglioni family and an expert of art"

Excellent book...
By whitewolf@communio.org
...it didn't lose my interest = it wasn't boring. Sure, it's short, but the author manages to fill it with facts. Too bad this one's out of print. I had a really hard time finding a biography on this fascinating woman, so when I picked this up I thought it wouldn't be great (hey, I got tired searching for an hour). I was wrong. If you need to do schoolwork on the Byzantine era, particularly the reign of Justinian I, then pick this one up.

Bearing the Absolute Aloneness of One's Solitary Spirit.
By tepi
SAMUEL BECKETT: A Biography. By Deirdre Bair. 736 pages. New York and London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978. ISBN 0-15-179256-9 (hbk).
In 1971, while casting about for a dissertation topic, Deirdre Bair wrote to Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) to ask if she could write his biography. He replied that, while he was not prepared to help her, he wouldn't hinder her either. As things turned out, he did help her to some extent, as did many others, and the result is this well-written, well-researched, and extremely illuminating account which covers the story of Beckett's life up to 1973. Although it has since been superseded by the fuller biography, 'Damned to Fame,' by Beckett's personal friend and official biographer, James Knowlson, which appeared in 1996 and which covers the whole of Beckett's life, Bair's book seems to me to be still well worth reading. The fact that she was not a personal friend had both disadvantages and advantages. Although it meant that certain things were closed off to her, at the same time it left her a certain freedom, the freedom to say things a friend might be disinclined to say.
Briefly Bair sees Beckett's mother as the key factor in his formation - a cold, frigid, and neurotic woman dominated by notions of class and respectability, and determined to mold him into an ideal son who would be respected by Protestant and materialistic upper middle class Dublin society. Beckett rebelled against this treatment from an early age, and the regular campaigns of psychological torture which his mother launched whenever things didn't go her way were to lead to his years of misery, repeated bouts of serious physical illness, and eventually to the full-blown psychosis which is evident in certain of his works. With a more balanced and loving mother, and one sensitive to her son's aesthetic nature, Beckett might have led a normal and happier life, though it is doubtful he would have arrived at the shattering insights into human nature and reality that helped make him one of the greatest writers of the age.
The story of Beckett's life and his extreme sufferings and spiritual anguish, as told by Deirdre Bair, is both horrifying and fascinating, and she does seem to have done her best to present it as objectively as possible, though she does allow her distaste for certain of his views to peek through at times. From her account, which covers far more than his devastating love-hate relationship with his mother, and which I can't even begin to do justice to here, we come away with an enhanced understanding of Beckett that should help anyone to better understand and appreciate his somber and often difficult works.
It's true that as a mere graduate student she could hardly be expected to have a grasp of Beckett's works as extensive as that of a seasoned professor such as Knowlson. It's also true that there appear to be a number of errors and misunderstandings in her work, possibly because of her limited access to materials. But her less unctuous attitude to her subject leads me to feel that we are perhaps getting a more objective portrait of Beckett, though one that in some respects is not as detailed as that provided by Knowlson, and the serious student will want to read them both.

Happy Days
By Michael E. Farman
I just read Bair's book. Impressed by her diligence and appetite for detail. Some interesting insights: for example, she claims that much of the dialogue in Godot was taken verbatim from his conversations with Suzanne, his lover, while fleeing from Paris during the war years when his resistance circle was busted by the Nazis. On the minus side, much of her psychology is too simple-minded and pat, with too much emphasis on his love-hate relationship with his mother. Worst of all, time and again she claims access to his thoughts and feelings way beyond what she can possibly have known. So many contradictions in his character that after reading it, still have no idea what really drove him.

Not a definitive study of the genuis of Samuel Beckett
By E. Dekker
As one who is attempting to read almost all there is to read regarding Samuel Beckett, I have to rate Bair's attempt as weak at best. I can't even begin to explain how far off she is attempting to characterize Sam, as he was a true sympathetic, modest, and generous person. Her allegations of his romantic encounters with actress Billie Whitelaw are completely unfounded, as Billie has explained countless times in interviews and her "chatterbox" sessions.
It is also important to understand that Deirdre Bair was a PhD STUDENT when she was working on this book, and that Sam said he would neither "help nor hinder her," meaning it was not authorized. If you looking for a solid academic study of the life of Samuel Beckett, I suggest you turn to "Damned to Fame," a work by renown scholar and PERSONAL FRIEND of Sam, and the ONLY authorized biography of Beckett. This book provides a truthful and honest look at the wonderful person Sam was, and doesn't turn to unfounded selacious details for dramatic effect.

Ichthyology has traditionally emphasized the systematics, anatomy, and distribution of fishes. In the past, most prominent names associated with the field made their major contributions in these areas. Today, however, people who study fish have more far-reaching interests. They study fish to find ways to improve fisheries or aquaculture, to determine the effects of human activities on aquatic environments, and to test ideas in rapidly developing fields, such as ecology, physiology, behavior, and evolution. Growing numbers of sophisticated amateur ichthyologists desire to increase their understanding of fish they keep in aquaria or of those they pursue with hook and line. Regardless of why fish are studied, those studying them still need the basic vocabulary and understanding of fish biology that traditional areas of emphasis provide and that are found in this book, integrated with recent developments in other areas. Our goal is to provide some feeling for the excitement engendered by recent research on fishes. We also want to promote a sense of urgency for the need to protect fishes and aquatic ecosystems. It is critical that a high diversity of fishes continue to be around to fascinate future generations.

In large part, this book is designed to serve as a text in classes on fish biology. The large number of chapters and the cross-references within chapters provide instructors of such courses with flexibility when assigning readings in the text. The students we had in mind while writing were junior- and senior-level university students. Our goal, however, is also to provide a useful and palatable summary of recent developments in ichthyology for individuals who have been away from the college classroom for some time and for anyone else who wants an introduction to the most numerous, diverse, and fascinating of all vertebrate groups.

This book would not have been possible without the encouragement and help of many people. Initial stimulation and support in fish biology was provided by John B. Moyle, Evelyn W. Moyle, and James C. Underhill (to PB.M.) and by Donald E. Wohlschlag (to J.J.C.). Gary D. Grossman, Donald M. Baltz, and Robert A. Daniels were especially helpful in developing the first versions of many chapters. Numerous graduate and undergraduate students contributed valuable comments on various chapters and/or helped to keep our research programs going while we devoted time to writing. We benefited from discussions with Jeff Graham, Fred White, Tony Farrell, Alan Heath, Carl Schreck, Monica Choi, Stephanie Chun, Hiram Li, Ken Gobalet, Dave Randall, Mikko Nikinmaa, George V Lauder, Laurie Sanderson, Chris Myrick, Cincin Young, Tina Swanson, Carlos Crocker, Shana Katzman, Ann Houck, Ryan Mayfield, Marianne Brick, Keith Marine, Michael Karogosian, Peter Wainwright, and Serge Doroshov. The expert editorial assistance of Chris Myrick and Julie Roessig was especially appreciated during preparation of the fourth and fifth editions, respectively. Ms. Roessig also contributed several original figures to the fifth edition. Trilia Chen also contributed an original figure and editorial assistance to the fifth edition. The reviews of selected chapters in previous editions by Eugene Balon, Michael Bell, David Ehrenfeld, Dale Lott, John Radovich, Arnold Sillman, Randolph Smith, and Paul Webb are appreciated, as are comments by Brooks Burr, Barbara Block, Alfred Ebeling, Kurt Fausch, Malcolm Gordon, Bruce Herbold, Mark Hixon, Paul James, Douglas Markle, John McEachran, Lawrence Page, Theodore Pietsch, Howard Reisman, Frank J. Schwartz, Jerry J. Smith, Timothy Tricas, Linda A. Ward, and Ronald M. Yoshiyama. Theodore Pietsch, Joseph Eastman, Leonard J. Compagno, and Tim M. Berra kindly shared with us their photographs and illustrations of curious fishes. Marjorie Kirkman-Iverson and the staff of our department assisted us in many ways—but especially by keeping the departmental office running efficiently, making it much easier to accomplish our regular duties while the book was in progress. Finally, we are exceedingly grateful to our wives, Marilyn Moyle and Mary Cech, for permitting our marriages to survive and even grow stronger during the many hours over the years we have worked on fish, and to our now-grown children, Petrea and Noah Moyle and Scott and Gregor Cech, for continuing to accept us despite our sometimes obsessive interest in fish.

The following reviewers were generous in providing comments and criticism of various editions of the book: Gary J. Atchison, Iowa State University; Dan Beckman, Southwest Missouri State University; Giacomo Bernardi, University of California, Santa Cruz; William Falls, Hillsborough Community College; Ronald A. Excellent text
By Sleepypenguin45
I had the very fortunate opportunity to take Dr. Moyle's ichthyology class at UC Davis. We used this book as our text. The book was very helpful, and well explained. Moyle and Cech go into a great amount of detail in this text, and yet convey it in a straightforward and understandable way.

There is more out there
By Dennis Dauble
This is an excellent text for upper-division fisheries and wildlife students. It is nicely organized to include the most important topics and with clear graphics to support the narrative. However, its cost and level of detail are more suited as a reference book for those entering the profession. I might suggest "Fishes of the Columbia Basin" by D.D. Dauble, which is an easier, yet informative, read for undergraduate fisheries student or armchair fisheries naturalist from the West Coast. Alternatively, Fish An Enthusiast Guide by Moyle might be suitable for the general fish person seeking more detail on the topic. Both books are available as paperback in the $15-20 range last time I checked.

For someone who just got through Biology 1 and 2, I get bogged down with the technical language used in this book (that cannot be found in the index). Once I get past that aspect, it is filled with in-depth information. As a visual learner, I feel that this book could use some more pictures. This would be a great book if you plan on going into aquatic Biology as a major or for graduate school, but the average student could lose focus and interest quickly.
