Jonathan Chin, CCIE No. 11,105, is a development test engineer in the Packet Test group under the Internet Technologies Division (ITD) within Cisco Systems. Based in Singapore, his responsibilities include development and regression testing for advanced Cisco Frame Relay, ATM, and X.25 features in Cisco IOS Software releases. Currently, Jonathan is actively involved with new feature test projects in Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TPv3) and Any Transport over MPLS (AToM) technologies. Jonathan also holds CCNP, CCNA, and Wireless LAN Design certifications from Cisco and has earned his bachelor of applied science degree in computer engineering at NTU Singapore.

Great Topics, Average Depth

Jonathan Chin?s Cisco Frame Relay Solutions Guide (ISBN: 1587051168, Cisco Press) is a new book on an older WAN technology widely deployed in small companies, the enterprise, and service provider networks: Frame Relay. Although one might think that many Cisco Press Frame Relay books exist, there really are none that cover the technology comprehensively, including newer advancements in Frame Relay technology. The closest document would be the Cisco IOS Wide Area Networking Configuration Guide found online or on the Cisco Documentation CD. Jonathan Chin takes many technical aspects and explains them in friendlier terms with IOS command examples and case studies to reinforce the theory. His book includes twenty-two chapters broken out into five major categories:

? Frame Relay ? Technology

? Frame Relay ? Policing & Shaping

? Frame Relay ? Traffic Management

? Frame Relay ? Congestion Management

? Frame Relay ? Congestion Avoidance & Signaling

Just by looking at the major section headers, it is obvious that the book focuses on QoS strategies in a Frame Relay environment, and this is the real value and uniqueness of the book as it discusses updated modular QoS CLI (MQC) best practices in a Frame network. Frame Relay traffic shaping (FRTS) with low latency queuing (LLQ) and class based weighted fair queuing (CBWFQ) is a great example of a real world Frame/QoS strategy that is well documented in this book. FRF.12 fragmentation, compression, and FRF.16 multilink Frame Relay are other topics that Chin covers and helps to clarify their context and possible uses. Aside from QoS techniques, Chin also covers lesser known Frame Relay technologies such as PPP over Frame, Frame SVC?s, and X.25 over Frame. Lastly, Chin spends some time going through different ways to configure a Cisco router to act as a Frame Relay switch, and what types of QoS can be used in those scenarios.

Again, the QoS sections of the book are good and helpful, although at times it seems that too many different topics are covered leaving less in-depth details for any one topic. Readers familiar with MQC will have a much easier time with the book than those who haven?t spent anytime working with or investigating QoS strategy. The major drawback to the book is that it includes some sections that could either be reduced or not included at all. The first 90 pages are devoted to basic Frame Relay technology which in one sense is to be expected in a ?Frame Relay Solutions Guide,? but on the other is unnecessary given that the basics are well documented elsewhere. Chin works in the ?Fancy Queuing? techniques of Priority and Custom queuing on different occasions in the book, which at some level is more a topic of historical knowledge than real world practical. The MQC configs are much more valuable and applicable; more time should have been spent in those areas instead of priority queuing. The X.25 over Frame was a perplexing chapter as Chin states that ?the use of X.25 protocol on network backbones is fast becoming obsolete? (p.332). Again, interesting from a posterity perspective, but the reality is that X.25 is obsolete. Chin would have better served his reading audience by providing just two major categories: Advanced Frame Relay technologies (PPP, Frame/ATM, ELMI Switching, etc) and Frame Relay QoS technologies (FRTS, fragmentation, compression, RSVP, WRED, etc.).

The Cisco Frame Relay Solutions Guide has good information for the small company up to the enterprise and even at the service provider level, especially as it pertains to QoS. Some of the other advanced Frame technologies may be useful at the enterprise level, but the coverage depth is too shallow for the service provider. This is a good book to see what Frame Relay can do outside of configuring your standard PVC?s and when you need to deploy QoS. It is not comprehensive or deep enough, however, to stand as an authoritative source for Frame Relay.

Acurate, Appropriate , and Applicable

The title is accurate because the Jonathan Chin begins each chapter with certain problems that are encountered with Frame Relay. Then he spends that chapter demonstrating how Cisco has addressed these obstacles with new features in their Internetwork Operating System (IOS). Chin deals with the problems of multi-access Frame Relay, but dedicates more time to hub-and-spoke networks, since this is the most common type seen in the industry. There are so many options for shaping and managing traffic across the Frame Relay links with the newer versions of the Cisco IOS. And Chin explains them all showing how they solve existing limitations and what new limitations they bring, if any. When a new feature is presented, he usually charts out the advantages and disadvantages of the new versus the old configurations.
The reader should have some basic knowledge of wide area networking to find the information in the Cisco Frame Relay Solutions Guide useful. The service provider offering complete end-to-end solutions for customers will get the most from the book. However, network administrators throughout the industry will find it useful for managing their leased Frame Relay network. There are some examples of what can be done on only the end DTE routers, without the help of the service provider.
The chapters have excellent references with review questions. Nine of the chapters include case studies where real life problems are problems are described and solutions are shown with configurations. The author obviously has an excellent lab where the solutions were tested and documented. Chin also presents solutions that would be helpful in countries where the infrastructure is out-dated. One nice trick is multi-plexing multiple DLCIs to increase bandwidth where a full T1 is not possible. I give this book a five star rating for layout, accuracy, and usefulness.

CCIE Lab recommended reading; Good Frame Ralay reference!!

OSPF running in NBMA and in Hub-and-Spoke network topology (partially meshed networks) used to be a never land for me. I found it hard to commit the details of every possible changes in this topology into my long term memory. Before I found this book, I used to "memorize" gotcha as many as I can, and I always had hard time to answer my own why. Don't mention configure it with confidence. A variety of Frame Relay interface types such as p2p, p2m, p2m non-broadcast, and multipoint just did not make sense. Do they come solely to mess up with us? Why can't people make things simple and straight? Why is the correct configuration this way, not that way? Chapter 4 in this book answers all my questions about Frame Relay.

Besides different verdor's Lab Workbooks, it is really hard to find a good material like this book which explains Frame Relay and presents scenarios so well. I feel well worth the $40.

Goofy Zombie Novel

It's bad enough to be labeled a juvenile delinquent over an accident and sent to a wilderness program with other criminals, but watching everyone around you turn into flesh eating zombies just makes it that much worse. In Sean Beaudoin's Infects, Nero is trapped in his own worst nightmare... but at least there is a cute girl there too!

Nick Soul couldn't have imagined a freak accident on the chicken "disassembly" line would have him labeled an ecoterrorist or a criminal, but then again there isn't much in his life that goes his way. As he is on his way to the wilderness program that is supposed to "straighten him out", he realizes there are worse things in this world than the genocide of chickens that happens everyday in the chicken factory. Once he chooses his wilderness name, Nero, he is immersed into a ride that no one world have expected.

Not 24 hours in the woods and Nero wakes up to a sight he can't believe is real despite looking at it with his own two eyes: one of his counselors is bent over the other counselor... eating him. It is that very moment that all hell breaks loose. The few other delinquents who aren't crazy cannibals take off with Nero headed away from the campsite- they don't know where they plan to go, but they know they can't stay there! On the way, the boys encounter all manner of zombies, but what is even scarier than their desire for human flesh is the fact that they seem able to think, reason, and solve problems. Those are never good qualities to find in a zombie. You never want a zombie to be smart enough to find even more ways to eat you. If life wasn't hell for Nick before he became Nero, its about to be worse than any hell he could imagine.

Well, I think it is important to know that this zombie novel isn't really your classic zombie novel. It is more like "Shawn of the Dead" in novel form, a farce, a spoof, if you will. I thought it was a real zombie novel, so when I delved in and started to notice some quirks and odd characters, I became suspicious. By the end it was clear this was a goofy book playing off the subgenre. That isn't to say it isn't funny, because it is, but if you were looking for a real zombie novel, try Jonathan Maberry's Rot and Ruin series.

That being said, this was a pretty entertaining, albeit goofy, book. The descriptions and dialogue will leave you chuckling, and even the zombies themselves are ridiculous (even with gory bits of human gristle hanging out of their mouths). Even though the story is funny, it is also pretty bloody. I would suggest this book for those students who like a good horror movie but have a sarcastic streak. Those are the kids who will appreciate this story the most. While it wasn't my favorite book, this story gave me a few chuckles and definitely has a niche audience. I can see myself passing it off to my older students (some pretty vulgar language on top of gore and sexual content). But, it would definitely have to be the exactly perfect audience for this story to work for one of my students.

A smart, fun and subversive take on zombies.

By all means, if you'd prefer NOT to read a genuinely smart, wicked, funny and creative take on zombies, keep on lurching. For everyone else, there's The Infects.

Having read and enjoyed other books by Sean Beaudoin, I went into this one with high expectations. I'm happy to say they were exceeded, and then some.

This is not your average zombie story, not by a long shot. It's too intelligent for that, too fun, too imaginative and too hilarious. Memorable characters, pop-culture references, witty dialogue and an engaging story line? Check. Add well-crafted sarcasm and liberal doses of subversion and you get a thoroughly enjoyable read with an unusual and satisfying ending. Highly recommended.

Spleen eating was never so much fun.

I generally avoid the new wave of books about vampires, werewolves, and other monsters because they have been done to death and the stories are require a suspension of reality that I just can't fathom. On the other hand, The Infects, by Sean Beaudoin, is a completely different creature. Although tales about zombies are nothing new, Beaudoin's writing style, intellect, and hilarity make all the lung eating and skin chewing more fun than a monster story has any right to be. Throw in foul-mouthed youth, a backstory invested with just the right dose of emotion and family drama, and social satire as sharp as a zombie chomp to the jugular, and you have a pretty special book. And for once, here is a book with an ending that is not only surprising, but completely satisfying. Beaudoin has got a great voice - smooth, incisive, and really, really funny - and this is great stuff. Definitely recommended.

It was fluff and easy, with no real climax or twists

As an avid mystery/suspense reader, Mary Higgins Clark has been on my list of must-read authors, but this was the first book of hers I've read…probably the last one, too.

The book starts off with a bang and promises an intriguing plot, but in my opinion it fails to deliver. As a recent widow working on a new cable series about true crime, Laurie gathers 4 old college friends together to be interviewed about an unsolved crime they were all witnesses/suspects to 20 years ago.

The author spends quite a bit of time developing their characters and possible motives, then rehashes them ad nauseum. The reasons why each "suspect" may have to murder the victim is repeated literally dozens of times. It's as if the author assumes the reader won't be able to remember each characters traits, past and possible motive. This book could have been trimmed whole chapters worth of writing and nothing would be lost but these repetitions.

This was a quick read that didn't involve any real thought. It was fluff and easy, with no real climax or twists. I also found annoying the way the writing seemed to jump from 3rd person to 1st and back again. A lot of the writing was inner questions a character thought or asked of themselves, but even though the book is written in 3rd person, the writing reverts too often to 1st in these inner dialogues, it got tiresome.

Be warned

I have never reviewed a book before and it takes a lot for me to criticise something, but I feel it's my duty to warn people not to spend money on this. I've read hundreds of books and I can honestly say this is the worst I've ever read. Based on all the five star reviews I kept thinking the weak plot and undeveloped characters were some kind of warm up and an incredible twist was coming....but instead things just got worse and worse. Every chapter felt like "Murder Mysteries for Dummies" with a helpful summary at the end to remind you who was under suspicion and why, and if the summary wasn't enough, the characters also engaged in stilted dialogue with each other (or sometimes even themselves) to refresh your memory again about who may have dunnit, just in case you forgot. That combined with the gaping plot holes (why would someone who was smothered with a pillow have strangulation bruises on their neck??), predictable love story and ridiculous "reveal" of the killer made this a miss from start to finish.

I feel horrible writing this but I wish I'd read a review like this before I bought it, so hopefully I can at least do one person a favour. I'm not sure what all the five-star reviewers are on - perhaps I've been spoilt reading amazing thrillers by the likes of Jo Nesbo lately, so this just felt like a children's book by comparison. Spend your hard earned cash on something else.

Good Fast-Paced Mystery Novel

As usual, Mary Higgins Clark delivered. She is one of my favorite authors because her books are such fast reading ones -- no long drawn descriptions of things and she gets right to the heart of the matter. I recommend this book for those who want a fast-paced mystery. Not for those seeking an intricate and deep-thinking book.

I am living proof that the tools in this book ...

I am living proof that the tools in this book really do work. I have been in therapy with Erik Cooper over 15 years and he has shared these tools with me. I was trying to navigate down my hill without any focus and was using alcohol to ease the pain from crashing into all of my boulders. During one session Erik told me that God loves me and that gave me the courage to grab on to the Only Arm Long Enough to reach the bottom of the hopeless pit. I have been out of the pit for over 14 years now and my journey to my cabin is still in progress, but with the help of these daily tools I am going to reach the goal that my Heavenly Father has planned for me.

This book is a gift! Jammed packed with insight and information, it is an opportunity to take a personal inventory, weed your inner garden and let your flowers bloom. It is a challenge to do the hard work of building character, but this book has a built in GPS to help you find your way. It helped me be honest about my roadblocks and understand how to navigate forward. I have never done so much thinking when reading a book. Great Book

Im reading this book with my 12 year old son. He struggles daily with his emotions. This book has not only given us both tools we can use to help ourselves, but has pushed me to sit down with him, help him, spend one on one time with him, guide and support him, but has also given him something he can relate to. He told me "I feel like this book understands me." This book has been a huge help even if there are some things that take a lot of explaining.

It is alright.

From reading multiple other books on physique, bodybuilding, training, etc... I was really hoping this would be more in-depth, structured, and detailed.

It is decent for a beginner's guide, but even myself am a beginner at Men's Physique Competing, and I found this book to be lacking in information.

I found this book easy to read, enjoyable and informative. The author covers nutrition, proper way to get into competition shape and tips and hints to overcome plateaus. Even though it was short it has a timeline for what you need to do if you want to get in optimal shape for a show.
