Not too useful, but intentionally so

The point of this book is provide IDEAS. LaVey has made it clear, both in this book and the rest of his writings, that a true Satanist will devise his/her own rituals and workings. This is just a mishmash of rituals from history and fiction that can provide the creative mind with fertile ground from which the REAL workings can spring. I was very disappointed in this book at first, until I understood its true purpose.
Those who are looking for some magic "formula" that they can follow to achieve "fortune" or other such unimaginative dreams of success would probably be happier with Simon's ridiculous "Necronomicon." Or, alternatively, go join a Wiccan group and dance naked around a fire, wearing power crystals.

Great book...for Satanists, that is.

This book is a collection of 8 or 9 "dark" rituals either created by LaVey's Church of Satan or taken and adapted from different cultures. There are also some interesting introductions and closing remarks on these cultures and the practice of ceremonial-like magic in general. And that's basically it. It gets 5 stars for being what it says it is: a COMPANION to the Satanic Bible. But as a stand-alone book I know it's not going to appeal to many.
This ISN'T a book for those who immediately want to read and learn about Satanism. That would be like trying to learn about Beethoven by looking at the sheet music for his 9th Symphony! Besides, those who believe everything on TV will be sorely disappointed that these rituals don't involve sacrificing animals, drinking blood, and all that other stuff you see in the B-movies.
This IS however a book for those who have already read The Satanic Bible, and are interested in aspects and further examples of GROUP ritual. LaVey also expands a bit on the subject of ritual magic, whether group or solitary, as discussed in The Satanic Bible. Other occultists might like the book, if anything just to read another man's view of ritual chamber practices, and to see some more examples of ceremonies taken from different cultures. I've seen plenty of impractical and uninformative occult books on the shelves that cost two to four times as much. Being someone who actively performs group rituals, this book was definitely was well worth my $6.

_The Satanic Rituals_

_The Satanic Rituals_, like its 1969 predecessor _Satanic Bible_ [cf. my Amazon.com review], is most accurately seen in the 1972 context of its creation: to supplement the _SB_'s Black Magical theory. Just as the _SB_ grew out of a series of handouts provided to members of the 1968-70 Church, so the _SR_ was originally a looseleaf collection of ritual texts restricted to its Priesthood during that same period.
The _SB_ contained three elementary *operative* Black Magical workings, but none of the *illustrative* type that Anton LaVey felt equally significant. Illustrative rituals possess no independent power; they are "mind mirrors", enabling the magician to see his will articulated and displayed before him, so that he may adjust and refine it.
In his introductory essay "Concerning the Rituals", Anton further differentiates rituals and ceremonies: A *ritual* affects the practitioner; i.e. it executes a "mind mirror" function. A *ceremony*, on the other hand, is merely a pageant or a play for psychodramatic illustration of a favored belief or philosophy.
The _SR_ is a book in three "layers". The first is that of *literal truth*, which the book purports to be. The second is that of *deception*, which much of the book actually is. The third layer is that of *underlying magical instruction*, which transcends mundane conventions of truth and falsehood.
A person who applies the principles in the book by actually performing the rituals and ceremonies will discover that they *work*. Should he discover the factual flaws in the essays and texts, he will be somewhat confused as to *why* they work. Only then will he begin to realize the truth underlying the art and science of magic: that the powers to create and to define are *functions of the will*. Thus he reaches the _SR_'s third and final layer.
The series of rituals begins with the traditional Black Mass, said to derive from 19th century France's Society of Lucifer. Actually it is a "censored" version of the _Missa Solemnis_ composed by Priest Wayne West (cf. my _Church of Satan_), which in turn drew heavily from J.K. Huysmans' _La-Bas_, the famous classic of French Satanism.
Anton states that the original Knights Templar developed the "Stifling Air" after their 13th century visit to the Yezidis. There is no evidence of such visit, nor does "SA" reflect actual Yezidi theology. He then suggests that the "Stifling Air", as a 6th Degree of the Knights Templar, is designed to follow a rite of the Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine wherein they travel beyond the "Devil's Pass". In the actual AAONMS ritual text, however, the candidate does *not* enter the pass. "SA" defaults to Anton's own creation, adapted from Raynouard's 1806 drama _Les Templiers_ and James Thomson's 1880 poem _The City of Dreadful Night_.
"Das Tierdrama", again a variation of the original Church of Satan version (_COS_), is adapted exclusively from H.G. Wells' _The Island of Dr. Moreau_.
"Die Elektrischen Vorspiele"'s theme of the "Hounds of Tindalos" derives from Frank Belknap Long's famous 1929 story. It has no Nazi-SS ancestry at all.
"The Homage to Tchort" is supposedly from Russian mythology. But the Khlysty sect was scarcely Satanic in doctrine; its adherents practiced fasting and self-scourging to drive out devils of the flesh, which unsurprisingly evolved into wild sexual orgies.
Confusion over "Melek Taus" arose from the secrecy of the Yezidis' two sacred books, and persists in _SR_, which interchanges their names. The _al-Jalwa_ is properly translated as _The Book of the Revelation_, while it is the *other* Yezidi book - _Mashaf-a Resh_ - that is entitled _The Black Scripture_ (cf. _COS_).
The most blasphemous second-layer deception in _SR_ consisted of my own introductory essay on H.P. Lovecraft, my "Ceremony of the Nine Angles", and my "Call to Cthulhu" (cf. _COS_). In 1971 Anton visited me at the U.S. Army Armor School at Fort Knox, insisting that the _SR_ would just not be complete without them.
The two Satanic Baptismal ceremonies - one for adult Satanists and the other for children who were not actually members of the Church - were both original to the Church of Satan. (I authored the Oath contained in the adult Baptism.)
"The Unknown Known" touches obliquely on Hans Hoerbiger's _Welteislehre_, or Doctrine of Eternal Ice, in which the history of the universe consists of alternating cycles of fire and ice. The "Wel" gained popularity in Nazi Germany because of Adolf Hitler's enthusiasm for Hoerbiger, whom he called "the German Copernicus". Anton, however, creatively interprets the theory in a social, not a cosmological context.
Anton concluded the original dedication page with my name, immediately preceding it with that of my Army boss at the time, Brigadier General George S. Patton III. And I'll leave that a "final mystery" of this exotic, fearsome, and dangerous little book!

Expensive, Verbose, and Inferior to its competitors

First let me begin by saying that I have no relationship to the authors of this text, I was not a former graduate student of their's nor do I have any particular axe to grind. The same can not be said of many of the recent spate of five star reviewers, many of whom are former graduate students of the authors in question and whose objectivity is highly questionable, given the widespread nepotism endemic in public education. Furthermore, I will only be reviewing the Mechanics portion of Etkina's text, I will expand on the other components of the text as time goes on. The redesign of the algebra/trig based Physics put Etkina's text along with Knight's College Physics, front and center as the effective textbooks of choice by the College Board. While I am not using this text in my classroom, I am reading and assessing the text for potential future adoption for which is the purpose of this review.

Writing an introductory physics text is an art. On the one hand the author has to strike a balance between explaining the material as thoroughly as possible. On the other hand the author must weigh the patience of their audience, late teens who could care less about the details and 'learn what they need to know'. Judging on the content in Mechanics alone, Etkina's book is a full 20% longer than most Introductory Physics texts and is very text heavy.

The strength of Etkina's book is in the details, where painstaking effort is spent on showing various representations of the material, especially early on. However, one gets the impression from reading the text that all representations stand on equal footing, when the reality is that if one goes beyond the introductory level of physics, it is the mathematical representation that is primary. The inclusion of derivations of many key results is commendable and demonstrates that the authors properly place a value in the importance of deriving results.

Another strength is the inclusion of details that serve as interesting reading for physics teachers who already have a strong attachment to the material, like how Newton formulated his theory of Gravitation. At the same time, this is probably material that is best left in the appendix of the Student Edition or the Teacher's Edition. This allows teachers to decide whether or not to include this into their repertoire and for interested students to investigate further. Which is one of my gripes with this text; it tries too hard to be a textbook, lecturer and lab instructor. This is not the point of a textbook, and it will undoubtedly make it an exhausting read for first year physics students. I know from experience that it is a struggle to get my students to read even a short textbook. I honestly can not imagine them trudging through this tome.

In general, I find the problems to be a bit routine, verbose and in some cases detached from the mindset of first year students; for ex. "Design, perform and analyze the results of an experiment to determine the coefficient of static and kinetic friction between a penny and the cover of a text book." This is extraordinarily difficult for students to do, they do not have enough experience either with equipment or physics to actually construct experiments, much less for homework. Alongside this is the the near complete omission of derivation style problems, whose difficulty tend to lay in between the routine problems and open-ended inquiry based problems. Derivation problem types help bridge the difficulty and their omission is a serious issue for students who want to take the next level of physics.

In terms of raw content, I find the Work and Energy to be the most problematic. First, there is no definition or distinction between conservative and non-conservative forces so the theoretical basis of the conservation of mechanical energy is basically taken as a postulate. Second, the construction of potential energy functions are done incorrectly, as a result it is possible for students to draw some very bad conclusions based upon their derivations. For instance, it can be easily shown using their derivation technique that the force of friction has a potential energy function-which is fundamentally wrong. The important Work Energy theorem is effectively removed from the chapter and F vs. x graphs are de-emphasized. Instead we get Energy bar charts, which are useful but also a bit trivial and does not scale beyond a first year course. Lastly, the gravitational potential energy function for general gravitation is given without proof, which is common but not necessary. A geometric/algebraic proof utilizing the area under the force vs position curve should be included in the appendix.

Another issue I have with the text is that it goes into exhaustive detail of the bodies associated each force F(A on B) and then sloppily adopts an alphabet soup for notation of force types, f for friction, N for normal, T for tension, but then excludes gravity. While I learned physics using this alphabet soup, many authors have since moved on and for good reason. It is much more clear to use F to first indicate that it is a force and subscript to indicate the type of force and if necessary use parenthesis for the bodies in the subscript.

Last but not least, it would be a great error for a teacher to evaluate a textbook without evaluating the supplemental materials that accompany it. This is probably the area of greatest weakness with the Etkina text. First the Active Learning Guide is far too expensive and its purpose is too vague for either students or school districts. Are another 200 pages of text required to explain the underlying physics? Should the problems in the Active Learning Guide simply been included in the end of chapter problems of the textbook? The creation of the Active Learning Guide predates the textbook and it appears that the authors did not want to let it go and instead have chosen redundancy. The test materials and clicker questions are nowhere near the standard of other textbooks: Giancoli, Young, Serway etc.
When taken as a whole, I feel that it is a good starting point for a text but that there was not sufficient editorial oversight. Furthermore, the authors, publisher and the College Board should be more conscious of the cost of this text and its supplemental materials. When I consider the deficiencies of the textbook, the lackluster supplemental materials and the cost, I will not be adopting the text.

But that is not all; then the artist has added an excellent collection of other images for variety that will keep you inspired and coloring.

The artwork is flowing, with meticulous attention to detail, creating a book that is a delight to color.

This book will inspire all those who love flower patterns.

1. 61 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on light weight, bright white paper.

2. All markers and Gel pens that I tested including Triplus fineliners and Fiskars Gel pens bleed through the pages, I just place a piece of paper under the page I am coloring to prevent damage to the next picture. The paper is good quality even being light weight, coloring with Bic mark it and Sharpie ultra fine markers, the markers do not spread outside the line as you color, even the thinnest lines.

3. Most of the images lend themselves well to Ultra fine markers, Gel Pens, or Colored Pencils

4. The pages in this book are not perforated, and it doesn’t lie completely flat, but the images start far enough away from the binding so you can color the entire picture or remove them easily from the book.

5. The cover picture is not included in this book and is not representative of most of the pictures in the book; a few are whimsical like the cover.

6. The Illustrations include: 3 Landscape images, 5 with fish, 3 with butterflies, 4 with birds, 2 with geometric designs, 2 leaf pattern, 1 fruit basket, 1 feather pattern, 1 abstract landscape, and 39 imaginative varied flower pattern designs .

7. I am going to include my favorite images from this book for those times the “Look see” function doesn’t work.

Excellent coloring book that will appeal to a range of skill levels and styles - cute, simple, scenic, doodle-y, intricate!

I've been purchasing lots of coloring books for adults lately -- this is one of the nicest I've received thus far. There is a huge assortment of designs, ranging from simple and abstract to intricate and spectacular. Some pages will appeal to folks wanting simplicity and other pages will appeal to those wanting to focus intently for hours. There are some whimsical pages in an illustration style, and there are some pages in a grand scenery/landscape style. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with this coloring book. Very nice and wouldn't hesitate to purchase multiple copies again!

Editing review to add: pages are printed on nice, thicker paper. I did not have issues with bleed-through (I use Ultra Fine Sharpies mostly). Pages are not perforated. I didn't have any difficulties removing pages from the book - they separated from the binding fairly easily and cleanly.

Blondie Hasler was the leader of the famous 'Cockleshell Heroes'. He designed the canoes which were used in the operation, he recruited and trained the twelve men who made up this most secret team and led them on their daring mission, code name 'Operation Frankton', to attack enemy shipping in Bordeaux harbor.

He was one of only two 'Cockleshell Heroes' who came back alive, the other being Bill Sparks, his partner in the cockleshell Catfish. His story is told by former Royal Marine, Ewen Southby- Tailyour. The story of how Blondie managed to make contact with the Maquis once he and Sparks had completed the mission is well worth a book in itself.

Although the book offers a new insight into the men that were the 'Cockleshell Heroes' Blondie Hasler was more than just a 'Cockleshell Hero'. Ewen Southby- Tailyour has been given full access to family archive material, which reveals Herbert George Hasler as an extraordinary figure who makes this one of the outstanding biographies of the year.

Very in-depth look at an intensely professional individual

'Blondie' will appeal to WWII buffs and also to sailors. Hasler was the original "cockleshell hero". The first half is a difficult read owing to many, many military acronyms. After the war (about midway through) the book picks up speed and becomes quite a bit more enjoyable. The horrible reality of war really comes through, and this is over all a good read. Blondie was a consummate professional who loved adventure. His life is a story worth telling. Floyd Bryant, 9-Mar-99

Sailing with Colonel Hasler

I must admit that I had Blondie Hasler pegged wrong! Most people who have a knowledge of solo sailing, self-steering gear or World War II commando activity have run across Lieutenant Colonel Hasler. I imagine that the usual extent of people's familiarity with Hasler begins and ends with his "Cockleshell Hero" raid, and his famous quote about sailors who get into trouble in trans-ocean single handed races. ("They should drown like gentlemen.") This brief exposure to Blondie Hasler, I believe, leaves one to imagine him as a too tough, bull-headed, 'Colonel Blimp' type, English boys' adventure hero. Reading Blondie: A Biography of Lt. Colonel H.G. Hasler, by Ewen Southby-Tailyour will disabuse you of that false assessment of Hasler and give you a much better picture of him as a real, flesh and blood human being. And I am very glad of it! Blondie Hasler is one of those men who have been reduced to a comic book character by the hyperbole of a movie about a single incident in their lives. Hasler was so much more and is depicted by the book as being infinitely more likable than he was allowed to be by the limited and skewed image that has been portrayed of him. Yes, Blondie is still heroic, but thankfully Southby-Tailyour's book makes him a three dimensional character instead of a cardboard cut out. I embarked on Blondie's biography with some trepidation. It was rather lengthy and it was written by someone whose father served with Colonel Hasler, either of which could spell disaster in a biography. But Southby-Tailyour rose to the occasion and delivered a complete biography without succumbing to the tedium of minutia or fawning 'great man' worship. The book is quite readable and covers the well known aspects of Blondie's life sufficiently. More important however, is that Southby-Tailyour made Hasler into a complete person, and frankly, someone who I would like to have personally known and sailed with. I definitely do not miss the pre-biography, single dimensional, imagined Hasler. I vastly prefer Southby-Tailyour's real person. Keep in mind that this is a fairly complete history of Hasler, so if you will read about his extensive military career, his design and innovation career and his sailing career. I enjoyed it all because it all served to make Colonel Hasler the fascinating person he was.

I knew about Hasler before buying the book, being a solo sailing junkie so I was intrigued to finally read the book. It is eminently readable, easy going in tone without too much of the authors ego in it. I found some excellent quotes/concepts on leadership from Hasler in it. The details and particulars appear to be well researched & I have already recommended it in one of my sailing seminars.
For folks interested in the subject of the Genesis of modern solo ocean racing or the man in particular, including views on seamanship it is an invaluable read.

About the Author

Dr. Xiang (Robert) Li is a professor and Washburn Senior Research Fellow at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was formerly a professor at the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management at the University of South Carolina, and Associate Director of USC’s Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Travel & Tourism Industry Center and International Tourism Research Institute. Dr. Li’s research mainly focuses on destination marketing and tourist behavior, with special emphasis on international destination branding, customer loyalty, and tourism in Asia. He has authored nearly 100 scientific publications and is serving on the boards of 11 journals and book series. He is currently guest-editing a special series on "Emerging-Market Tourist Behavior" for the Journal of Travel Research. He also guest co-edited a special issue for the Journal of Business Research and one for the Journal of China Tourism Research. Dr. Li’s academic work has been recognized by a number of awards, including the 2013 "Emerging Scholars of Distinction" Award by the International Academy for the Study of Tourism and the first-ever "Best Emerging Scholar in Tourism (B.E.S.T.)" Award by the International Tourism Studies Association.

Dr. Li has conducted extensive tourism research in various areas and has been awarded over $1.14 million in research funding. His clients include the United State Department of Commerce/Office of Travel and Tourism Industries (OTTI), China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), the United States Travel Association (UST, formerly TIA), and National Tour Association (NTA), as well as numerous destination marketing organizations and companies. His research on China and Japan outbound tourism and destination marketing has been cited by a number of American and international media, such as USA Today, Time, Las Vegas Sun Times, The Globe and Mail (Canada), and China Daily. During 2012–13, Dr. Li served on the Global Insights Advisory Council for Brand USA. He holds/held adjunct or visiting faculty appointments in universities in Australia, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. He is also a frequent speaker at numerous international and industry conferences.
