Terrific Introduction on AOP in .NET

This book fills a big gap concerning Aspect Oriented Programming in the .NET world. That's only one reason I give this book five stars.

It primarily covers the use of PostSharp and Castle DynamicProxy in a wide variety of AOP use cases. The good news is that you can employ the free version of PostSharp (and Castle is open source) to work through almost everything in the book.

I've read and worked through the entire book. Here is a synopsis of what's covered and my thoughts:

* Chapter 1 provides a good overview of AOP for readers not familiar with it.
* Chapter 2 is stunning: it builds up a class with many cross-cutting/non-functional concerns, and ends up refactoring everything with PostSharp. This is a truly motivational chapter, and along with chapters 7 and 9, it is one of the best.
* Chapters 3, 4, and 5 discuss different types of AOP, primarily with PostSharp, but also covers AOP with HttpModules and a secondary compile-time AOP tool for INotifyProperty changed. I struggled with a couple of items in Chapters 4 and 5 (some things appeared to have changed by the time the book was published), but I've posted "fixes" on Manning's author forum for the book. It would have been nice to see StandardInterceptor with DynamicProxy demonstrated in chapter 4 on Boundary Aspects.
* Chapter 6 deals nicely with testing both PostSharp and DynamicProxy, employing NUnit and Moq.
* Chapter 7 gives a deeper understanding of what compile-time AOP and runtime AOP are doing under the hood. Very enlightening, and you get a lot of respect the people who've created these AOP tools.
* Chapter 8 covers more advanced features of PostSharp (some features that are available in a commercial edition), and also the topic of multicasting for producing an even better codebase.
* Chapter 9 wraps everything up with with both PostSharp and DynamicProxy, employing greater separation of concerns and more IoC.

I didn't find typos (but I did refer to the source code to ensure I was namespacing some things properly), and a couple of the screenshots were incorrect in Chapter 3 (but the code works correctly). I worked through everything in VS 2012, the author uses VS 2010, but that won't make a difference. Also all of the code is in C#.

I recommend some background with Dependency Injection, specifically Mark Seamann's book on the topic, and that book is a useful companion as it also briefly discusses AOP/interception in Chapter 8 (you can compare and contrast).

I would say the target audience would be mid- to advanced-level C# .NET developers, in general, just because this book isn't a primer on C# 3.0+ features. However, a beginner could get a lot out of this book as well, with the caveat that it will take a little more time to understand exactly what the code is doing.

I give the book 5 stars because (a) it does exactly what it sets out to do, (b) it is fairly short (I don't typically have time to read 800+ page books), (c) typo's and errors are at a minimum (and the author is responsive in the online forum), and (d) it is the only book to cover this topic *well* in .NET. It could have gone into more features of PostSharp (commercial editions), and it does examine some of those in Chapter 8, but I think that would have alienated some readers or detracted from the main goals of the book (for which I thank the author).

Finally, unrelated to this specific book, I give props to Manning press for providing free electronic versions when you buy the printed book.

Perfect AOP guide for .NET developers of just about any level.

Using AOP delivers huge value and is fairly straightforward to start using it, but most .NET devs don't know that as in the .NET world AOP is really an underused architectural approach. This book makes the entry into the AOP world easy and fun. After 20+ years in the biz, I am more often disappointed by software development books than not, but this one is an exception: it's concise, approachable yet not overly simplistic, absolutely to the point, with no fluff. The book guides you by taking you to experimenting with a couple of popular AOP frameworks, PostSharp and Castle Dynamic Proxy, which is much easier than trying to piece together these technologies' respective documentation by yourself, and even if you don't end up picking either, the concepts and principals of AOP they illustrate are very likely to advance your enterprise application tier design abilities in a significant way. I highly recommend this book to every .NET enterprise software architect and developer. With knowledge picked from this book your BL implementations will attain the whole new level of maintainability, flexibility and even aesthetic quality. Thumbs up.

Very good intro to AOP for .NET

It was a good introductory book on Aspect Oriented Programming in .NET. Of course, it focused mainly on PostSharp, as that's the really only full-featured AOP framework for .NET that's out there. (Yes, that's a generalization--there are others, but I do find PostSharp to be the most complete and intuitive.) The only negative, of course, is that PostSharp's more advanced features are a bit pricey; but then again, if you're a business needing that level of functionality, you should be able to afford it.

Poorly done unfinished story

The errors in pronouns really just make this bad story worse. It's in third person but at random intervals it changes to first.

The characters themselves are immature teenagers masking as adults. The male is angry for no apparent reason. I looked I didn't find it. The female is a cross between a cheerleader with love self esteem and an irate toddler. Somehow this is supposed to make for either erotica or romance and it misses the mark.

The story itself is half baked, like we readers are just dropped in the middle of the story because the author didn't know how to frame this situation correctly. This is terrible and I'm mad I can't get my time back for reading it.

2 1/2 stars - Story was rushed and too short to develop characters properly

I would have given this 2 1/2 stars but boosted it to a 3 because while I felt it had some merit to it although not fully realized. (some spoilers) The beginning of the story was going along fine. I was getting it. I was into it. Then all of a sudden it felt like the author went on "high speed" , rushing to the finish and I was left behind going "uh ... wait a minute .." While the author attempted to flesh out her characters she didn't give them any chance to grow within the story. The main "Lycan" character, Auden started off as a very arrogant, rather egotistical, quite unlikable guy and then suddenly he changes into a soft, romantic, "I will woo you and win you" guy? What's up with that? And our other main character, Lona, goes from demur, "by the books", "just doing my job" girl to "oh, by the way, I'm a Lycan too and I can beat your butt if I want to"? What?? Add to this we have "mom" who is mentioned several times but not really given much merit and then we have "hey, meet my dad, the Lycan who chose to stay as a wolf all the time but I come to visit now and then". The final "seduction" and giving in to primal desires scene was rushed and did even make me raise one eyebrow in interest or "ahhh". The main story idea (plot) was a good one and could have made for a good story if it had been given time to grow and let more details fill in the gaps. As it stands, it was not that interesting and left me looking for something with more "meat" to it. I think the author should go back and develop the story and characters a bit more. It could be a really good story if given some work.

Ellaworth, yes or no

I am an intermediate turner, and do both bowl and spindle work. This book is heavily based on using the Ellsworth "signature gouge" for face grain - the bowls, pots and vessels. I had an Ellsworth gouge, because of seeing his video, before buying the book. To use this book you will either have to buy one, or regrind another bowl gouge to his form. I recommend it, although I'd take some of the instructions with a grain of salt. Like most skilled turners whose books I've read, or videos seen, he has a particular dedication to his style. An understandable thing as each of them has developed a skill and a style over years.

If I were to have three books on turning I'd have this Ellsworth book, and Richard Raffan's Turning Wood and his Turning Bowls. Raffan uses classic fingernail gouges and Ellsworth his signature gouge. I bounce between them, sometimes I like the classical and sometimes the signature, depending on the wood and the cut.

A final note, my first signature gouge was a 1/2" (flute width, 5/8" shaft). I work on a midi lathe and have since bought a 3/8" as well. I'd reground another 3/8" to the Ellsworth shape, but went for the original once I got the book. Both work well on my turnings, but if you are on a midi I'd go for the 3/8" first. Packard Woodworking sells both online in the USA.

Buy the book, but don't take it as gospel. Use Ellsworth's cuts, and the classical cuts, and find your own style. A final comment on books versus video, view the video but buy the book, you will find it is easier to remind yourself of the cut opening a book to the page rather than skipping through the video.

Fabulous Book

I have been turning less than two years but have read more than a dozen books on turning and own three of Raffan's and Keith Rowley's book. I have had the opportunity to see Dave Ellsworth demontrate at a symposium. I really like his book! Reading parts of the book reminded me of the notes I took at his demo covering points I was not aware of or failed to realize the importance. It is an inspirational book and covers topics frequently missed in other books like making your own tools. It has a great chapter on Design. It is probably not the first book a new turner would buy as it does not cover basics as well as some others like Keith Rowley's Wouldturning: a Foundation Course. But if you have advanced to bowls and hollow forms you need to get this book.

The book was both very practical, as well as a most enjoyable read. The "how to" segments on bowl turning and hollowing were complemented by the discussion on design. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in turning.

A beautifully produced book!

The book looks beautiful and is a high quality production, although it is a little thick. It is well laid out. The producer has taken an existing translation and married it with the original French text. While the translation is not word for word, it captures the author's intent. This was a little off putting as I would occasionally glance to the English side to figure out what a word meant and it might not be there, or might not be in the place it is in the English text.

My goal is to learn how to read French, and to do so you need to learn to figure out words in context. This edition really helps to achieve that goal. In retrospect I think if I had an exact translation of the French into English it would render the English text extremely clumsy and unreadable. But this was disorientating to begin with.

All in all I am very happy with this edition.

You need to get this book!

I just finished reading NOT IN MY HOUSE! by Pastor Andre Butler. It didn't take me long to complete this book. This book shares strategies to help you get out of debt God's way. If you are not a tither, you might want to start. In today's economy, you especially need something bigger than yourself. This book gives you a game plan for getting out of debt. It also brings to light how we have been sold a bill of goods when it comes to debt. Debt is not God's best and we need to stop acting like it is. A lot of people are saving up to pay for cars in cash to avoid all of the interest charges. I stopped buying furniture on credit years ago because it was just a ripoff. The book also talks about getting a 15 year mortgage as opposed to a 30 year mortgage. I am amazed at everytime I get a statement how I am literally still paying interest and will likely continue to pay interest for another 10 to 15 years on a 30 year mortgage loan unless something drastically changes. I plan to pay my car note off this year and after that I want to buy cars in cash.

It is time to stop giving our money away and take back the things that God's wants us to have. NOT IN MY HOUSE! shows you how to recession proof your home. You need to get this book and buy it for others as well.

This book is inspiring! Not only does Andre Butler provide a glimmer of hope during these uncertain economic times, but he also gives practical tactics for survival! Butler first pinpoints the reader at where he or she may be financially, and then takes the reader step by step to bring them from being recession-threatened to recession-proof! The 28-Day Challenge that goes along with the book is such a help to put these action steps into practice, but it is easy enough that you can do it consistently. About the Author

Marvin Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level for more than thirty-eight years. Since 1968, he has been employed�at Indiana University Purdue University�Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored�over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently�giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana, with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

Barbara Johnson has a BS in mathematics from Bob Jones University and a MS in math from Clemson University. She has taught high school and college math for 30 �years, and enjoys the challenge of helping each student grow in appreciation for and understanding of mathematics. As a Purdue Master Gardener, she also enjoys helping others learn gardening skills.�Believing that the best teacher is always learning, she recently earned a black belt in karate.
