Very Disturbing True Story

This is a true story about a man who lived and thrived on controlling, torturing and demeaning his family and those close to him. He tortured animals. He was an abuser both mentally and physically and a child molester. He was a murderer. He had no feeling toward anyone or anything except for himself and for fulfilling his own twisted, sick and warped fantasies.

I thought the way the book was written was great. It was easy to read and understand. It was detailed but only the important details. I've read true crime books where the author goes completely off-topic and starts going on and on about things not even related to the story. This was NOT one of those books.

While what happened in the book is EXTREMELY disturbing and brought me to tears of shock that someone this cold and warped actually existed and still exists (I believe Jesse James Cummings is still on death row in OK), I highly recommend it to any true crime book fan. It is a great read and written well.

fantastic true crime story

I've read many books on domestic violence, and this one is definately the most horrific in its detail. I couldn't put the book down. This well-written story of unspeakable horror shows the twisted mind of real monster who was a master-manipulator. But it's hard to believe that NO-ONE from the outside world has interferred on behalf of the children, when it was clearly indicated there were constant visitors to the house of horror. And how come that Child Welfare did not investigate further the conditions children were surrunded with. Were they blind, or nobody truly bothered or cared? Surely they must have asked how many children lived there at the time. (It's not clear if the Walfare saw them all apart from little Scottie.) My heart grieves for those who suffered at the hands of the monster, Jesse Cummings, but the women had a choice, while the children did not. This is the only book on true crime that really made me cry. Very disturbing, but excellent story to read and reflect on. I guess there is a lot to be done on the law of child protection yet.

Gripping to the end!

Well fellow readers, putting it nicely Jesse Cummings is a ...! I now believe it possible to be human, yet exist without heart or soul. The depravity of this man knew absolutely no bounds.
At one point many of us have thought about strangling a sibling in frustration, but to do so as a means of achieving sexual intimacy with your 11 year old niece - EVIL, pure and simple!
How did Jesse end up marrying 2 women? Obviously this was considered illegal, yet a second wedding ceremony was performed. Constantly pitting his 'wives' against each other served its purpose brilliantly for years - they were focused solely on survival, rather than methods of escape.
It is perplexing to me that no-one outside the 'family' made any attempt to help the women and children held captive by Jesse. Numerous (and in some cases severe) physical assaults were witnessed by visitors, who would understandably not confront Jesse in his home, but surely an anonymous call to police was possible.
I hear the question - why didn't the women help themselves? I believe sitting comfortably outside of such a world of hell forms part of the answer - no mother would willingly tempt a psychopath! ...

About the Author

David Edery is the Worldwide Games Portfolio Manager for Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade and also a research affiliate of the MIT Comparative Media Studies Program. Prior to joining Microsoft, David was the MIT CMS Program’s Associate Director for Special Projects. During that time, David cofounded the Convergence Culture Consortium, a research partnership with corporations such as MTV Networks and Turner Broadcasting. David also managed Cyclescore, a research project combining video games and exercise. David received his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and his BA from Brandeis University. He has published articles in the Harvard Business Review and several game industry publications and has spoken at many entertainment industry conferences.

Ethan Mollick studies innovation and entrepreneurship at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he is also conducting a large research project on the game industry. He holds an MBA from MIT and BA from Harvard University. He has consulted to companies ranging from General Mills to Eli Lilly on issues related to innovation and strategy. He has also worked extensively on using games for teaching and training, including on the DARWARS project of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. He was a founder of eMeta Corporation, the world’s largest supplier of software for selling content online, which was sold to Macrovision in 2006. Prior to eMeta, Ethan was a consultant for Mercer Management Consulting. He has published articles in scholarly journals, the Sloan Management Review, and Wired magazine and spoken at numerous conferences.

informative & entertaining with great case studies

What I liked most about this book was the way it addresses pretty much every major potential use of video games in a business setting. Most other books that I'm aware of have tended to focus on a single topic, like games and education. I also like the way the authors blended corporate case studies and academic research; again, most other books on serious uses of games tend to be overwhelmingly academic.

The part I personally liked most was the final chapter, which was probably the most speculative but also the most intriguing. I love the idea of using video games to turn complex problems into fun experiences that people play voluntarily and therefore solve the problems voluntarily! The book's examples of this, like Google's "Image Labeler" game, were very good.

I suppose my main criticism of the book is that precisely because it tackles so many subject areas, it doesn't often get into the nitty gritty of game development. It does offer very useful tips at the end of every section though.

Long story short I'd call this one of the most entertaining and informative books I've read on the subject of serious games. Well worth a read, especially if you're a business person looking for insight into the practical uses of games within every day corporate life. Most game books simply aren't written with a general business audience in mind.

Tipping Points Meets Super Mario Brothers

This book is a rare example of a business book that is really enjoyable, immediately practical, and generally inspirational - think "The Tipping Point" meets "Good to Great" meets Super Mario Brothers. In a quick few hours, I was introduced to a range of video games, and shown how they can be used for everything from selling products to coming up with new innovations. The first part is an introduction to games, with an overview of a variety of different game types. The next couple chapters cover games for marketing, including some really cool examples in which real products were incorporated into games, and others where virtual items were turned real products. The next section focuses on games for training and recruiting, with some neat cases from the military and Google. The final part show how games are going to be an important part of the future of business, giving examples of games being used to motivate people to work, to innovate, and even how games are being used to predict the future. Examples abound, and there are lots of good facts and figures.

The book is informative, but even better, this book is fun! The authors have a sense of humor, keeping things light even as they provide lots of information. And there are tons of interesting ideas, entertaining examples, and amazing pieces of information (did you know people spent 9 billion man-hours in 2003 playing Windows Solitaire alone?).

So, if you have a job dealing with marketing, product development, HR, strategy, or innovation, this is pretty much a must-read for understanding the future. If you just like games, like I do, you will find this a terrific read from people who know what they are talking about. Good stuff!

A book for humanists as much as for businesspeople

I blazed through the book in about five hours. I thought that it flowed
well, was logically organized, very well researched, etc. I think that, as an introduction for a manager to how to think about appropriate uses of
games in their business, it is actually a very helpful book - it doesn't
give a blueprint for what a company should do, but it definitely does make a strong case for what to consider when starting to think about the challenge. (This should be taken as very high praise, since I don't read business books, ever, preferring instead to mock them viciously.) Some stuff I particularly liked:

Given that there are two authors, the tone is amazingly consistent. I
thought the writing was excellent - I was buoyed along by how fluid and smart it was. On a related note, I loved how funny the book was - I started reading it in my gym and kept hooting with laughter on the elliptical. "Those sights include underground cities, murky swamps, troll-infested jungles, scorpion-filled deserts, and beautiful beaches - all of which seem even more remarkable when viewed from the back of a soaring griffin." (Now I, a non-gamer, want to play World of Warcraft!) "Of course, just because you want to see advertisements on the hood of a NASCAR stock car doesn't mean that the same ads belong on the side of a unicorn." I love it...

The thing that I liked best about the book, though, was sort of hard to put into words. But basically, the whole phenomenon of people playing games strikes me as immensely HUMAN. People are just people - we respond to the same impulses, whether the forum is online or "real life," and those impulses include a vast desire to create things, build communities and populate them, caretake, solve puzzles, collaborate, and to have things that are pretty or rare. Over and over again in the book, I was amazed at how much time people will spend taking care of sims, or virtual pets, or designing virtual t-shirts byte by byte, or whatever, just for the sake of doing it. I think this was well illustrated by the comment: "Game players have been known to create vibrant economies, develop complex social systems, generate innumerable pieces of digital content, and even perform boring data entry tasks, all on an enormous scale."

It's all amazing to me, that people do this in the absence (generally) of
financial incentive, and when all of this caretaking doesn't involve real
people or real objects (i.e. that they spend a ton of time to get a sword
that glows, but the sword is still just an online object) - and yet at the
same time, it makes complete sense. The internet gives people a forum in which they have a little microcosm of the world, in which to do all the things that humans want to do normally, but in which they have much more power and control than they do in normal life. I liked the comment "SimCity is a remakably undirected game, with few overall goals except for the player's desire to build the city that they want to build." Of course we want to build a small city and arrange it as we see fit. And of course we want every available tool to facilitate this, which is why I thought the anecdote about the DeCSS code being hidden in and disseminated through songs and pictures and haikus (!) was so hilarious and amazing and wonderful. Games give people a way to manifest their human impulses in a much less constrained way - even the use of avatars means that they can dispense with the physical (and personality) constructs that usually bound their activities in real life, further empowering them to do everything they might to do in life.

Anyway, that sense of joy in creation and collaboration, which came out both in the content of the book, but also in the tone of the writing, was the thing that I liked the best about it. This was a book written for humanists as much as businesspeople!

I was led to Margaret Atwood's poetry by Louise Penny, the mystery author. She mentioned in an interview how it inspires her. And it
is truly wonderful. Very accessible for those who, like me, haven't read poetry for a long time but reminds me why I should. It captures the essence of a moment, of a life, seemingly so effortlessly. Beautiful. And tough. Like life.

The heart of Margaret..

The idea of poetry written about intimacy may make some readers shudder. One might think it is even a clich�, but no matter who the objective logical thinker is, they are forced to admit there's a tiny part of them who has lived and breathed a relationship of power struggle, one that might have had them seizing and submitting to the core of their innermost thoughts. Love that has left them in doubt and strengthened the self in ways that only passion can accomplish.
As Atwood writes, "....and there isn't anything I want to do about the fact that you are unhappy and sick, you aren't sick and unhappy, only alive and stuck with it." She opens up to her readers those personal witticisms we have thought towards are own "unhappy relationships" while throwing in insightful humor and wild imagery, breaking the rules of all poets with her fascinating rhythms and adjectives. If you are missing this collection of poetry from your Atwood repertoire, you are missing the heart of Margaret, her furious meticulousness and unlikely metaphors aimed into the bloodied heart of an adoration and boredom for her unlikely male worshipper. Twenty-five years after its first publication, Margaret Atwood's verses still retain their power -- her imagery still startles and disturbs; her insights are still relevant. As Sharon Thesen has written, Power Politics is "astonishing, notorious, a classic."

Atwood is better-known as the Booker-Prize-winning author of The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Eye, and Blind Assassin. Though I admire her prose, if I had to choose, I would pick the poetry. It has always seemed more immediate, more personal than her novels and short stories, while still thoughtfully composed and within Atwood's glacial tonal range. As with her prose, Atwood delights the reader with her dry wit and elegant irony, even while maintaining her cool veneer of detachment.

About the Author
Terces Engelhart has been preparing and serving flavorful food and delicious meals since her childhood. She is interested in the healing power of food to help people who suffer from diet-based diseases, as she did. Engelhart and her husband, Matthew, opened the first location of their popular Caf� Gratitude 2004 in San Francisco, California. They have opened a second restaurant in San Francisco as well ones in Berkeley, Marin, and Los Angeles. The caf�s, which support local farmers, sustainable agriculture, and environmentally friendly products, serve living, organic food made with the freshest ingredients possible.The Engelharts published The Abounding River Logbook as well as The Abounding River board game, both of which focus on their practice of being in abundance. In addition, they lead monthly workshops on this topic and are often asked to be guests on radio and TV shows. The Engelharts live with two of their five children in San Francisco. Orchid (Richard Slayen) has studied food and cooking in such exotic places as Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Central America, and Mexico. This Is the Gourmet Answer to Raw Foods

One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when paring down my intake of food is the adjustment of making any kind of elaborate gourmet style meal if I need to, to making something out of almost no ingredients and not even be able to COOK IT!

When I switched to primarily raw foods, my family was on the verge of Mutiny. I tried RAW IN TEN MINUTES which at first was okay, but I have a good imagination. All of the recipes started to taste the same and my family went from eating everything on their plates to making excuses to avoid dinner and eat in their rooms (stashed organic corn chips etc).

When I saw I AM GRATEFUL, I figured it might be another blonger of a book, but I decided to try it anyway. It was someone's birthday the week I got it, so I decided to make a raw dessert (strawberry shortcake) and then a baked cake for everyone else.

I never made it to the cake. Everyone went berserk over the raw strawberry shortcake.

I have made about 1/2 of the recipes in this book so far and I can say OMG it is truly FANTASTIC. Our favorites are: Marinated Veggies, Falafels, Fiery Carrot Avocado Soup, Coconut Curry Soup (Thai), Thai green papaya salad , Coconut Lime Dressing, Jalapeno mint chutney, Smokey Mole (OMG that is the BEST RECIPE EVER), Marinara with Brazil nut Parmesan cheese, Pad Thai,pecan porridge, Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Shortcake (with raspberries is DIVINE), German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Apple Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.

We don't eat desserts that often, or we would have ripped through the entire dessert section.

Preparation is about that of any meal- it is not too involved on some recipes- but others, take overnight food dryer time and have to be planned accordingly.

However, I find that it works out fine in some cases to do an overnight. I am really in love with the recipes in this book. They taste AMAZING and Gourmet in quality, yet they have simple ingredients in some cases. I substitute ingredients I don't have until I can get what I need quite often.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is like Moosewood used to be to vegetarians years ago........

A Delicious Introduction to Gourmet Raw Vegan Cuisine

I was given this book as a gift, and I in turn, made a gift of this book to a friend, who like myself, is vegan.

One of the challenges that we vegans have is to prepare nutritious meals that are also delicious, so I am always looking for new ways to enhance the food I prepare. I enjoyed "I AM Grateful" and found several recipes that I could make right away with the tools I have in my kitchen. I especially enjoyed the "nut cheese" recipes.

There are three things I noted that make me rate it less than a five.

(1) To prepare many of the dishes, one must have a food processor and a dehydrator. I have neither, so I find that making many of the recipes is not currently possible for me.

(2) There is a lot of added sugars and fat in this cuisine, and not a lot of protein. It relies heavily on nuts and coconut (which have a lot of fat) and agave syrup for many recipes. I think for special meals and celebrations, this cuisine is ideal and delicious. But as I have begun to monitor my intake of fat and sugar, I don't see that I could eat this food all the time.

(3) It could get quite expensive to eat this way for those who are on a fixed or low income. For example, to make a quart of hemp seed milk using their recipe would cost about $17.00 to $18.00, as the recipe calls for two cups (one pound) of organic hemp seeds. Ditto for almond, hazel nut, and other nut milks.

The book is well written, informative, thought-provoking (Terces inserts coaching questions on almost every page), nicely-illustrated, and the recipes I have made have been consistently delicious. Overall, it is a wonderful book for your vegan friends.

Best. Tiramisu. Ever.

Well honestly I bought this just because I ate at the cafe and the tiramisu was for sure the best I've ever had... and it's raw vegan! (Which is not to say it's low-calorie... but it is delicious and doesn't give me a dairy hangover. In fact, It's like the best energy bar ever--it really does pick you up and keep you going.) Anyhow, back to the book--I've only made the tiramisu so far-- a bit time (and ingredient) consuming but worth it. Made a week's worth of tiramisu for 2 (I probably should have shared...). The irish moss (which many have written about in their reviews) was new to me, but I bought some on Amazon and it worked out just fine using the directions provided in the book-- just wash well, soak, and then puree well--no need to cook but you do need a good powerful blender. I did find I needed to tweak some ratios-- specifically add the coffee to the almond flour (rather than pour over in a later step as directed) to make it moist enough to mix with the date paste; added some extra water too. I also don't know if the 30 oz of almond flour was dry or fluid oz-- I would assume dry but that just seemed like wayy too much-- so i used about 2/3 of that and it came out tasty.
Other tips-- they say let it chill in the fridge/freezer for an hour between adding layers-- you need way more time than that (at least in the fridge, which is what i did. It was a wildly different (and tastier) cake the next morning once it had had time to set properly. And lastly, the whipped cream portion of the recipe makes a TON of whipped cream. I barely used 1/3 of it (which was reassuring since it's not exactly health food...) --I've been adding the remainder to smoothies. Yum

Outstanding Resource!!

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

Fantastic resource, terrible photographs.

This is the first review I've ever felt compelled to write on Amazon. I'm so torn on this book-- Anita Rui Olds was absolutely the preeminent authority on designing spaces for young children, and the value of the information contained in this book alone makes it worth its weight in gold. But I was so terribly disappointed at the quality of the practically-newsprint, see-through pages and dark black & white photos! Even the COLOR charts are in black & white! A large portion of the value of these sorts of curriculum and environmental design guides is in the photographs, which provide both examples of the ideas outlined in the text and further inspiration. This is why I recommend a book like "Designs for Living and Learning" and other books by Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, because the photos in those books are absolutely gorgeous and definitely serve to inspire teachers and other early childhood professionals. But if you're planning to open a childcare center and you need the nitty-gritty details on what shape you want the building to be, how to lay out the floor plan, what colors to paint based on the age group of the children and purpose of the space, etc, then buy this book and just try to ignore the photos, because the information alone will be worthwhile for you.

Long awaited, exceeds expectations

Preeminent authority on design for child care, Anita Rui Olds consummated a lifetime of deep concern and research into the needs of children with the publication of this magnum opus. Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

"The birth of Bangladesh" despite US, China and Pakistan.

The recent declassification of US Government archives has provided a rich mine of information on US behavior during the1971 war between India and Pakistan that liberated Bangladesh.

B Z Khasru, a US based journalist, has done extensive research of this newly declassified data to bring additional information about the 1971 events.

It was Bhutto, not Mujib, who broke Pakistan, says General Yahya Khan in an affidavit issued just before his death. All that Mujib-ur-Rahman wanted was for Bengal to have its fair share of growth, jobs, public purse and foreign aid; and the opportunity to grow through trade with India. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had a tacit preference to let East Pakistan secede (and leave the West to be governed by Bhutto) than be subject to a weak federation ruled by Bengalis. Bhutto preferred power than Pakistan.

Yahya was no angel either. His motivation to conduct elections was the probability of getting to stay in power for a long period of time since his Intelligence officers advised him that the elections might not result in a clear majority and the framing of a new constitution within 120 days after the elections is unlikely. His allusion to Mujib as the future PM of Pakistan was more to scare the politicians in the West and the army to unite.

However, Khasru's book is more about how US misplaced its principles and misread the tea leaves.

Nixon and Kissinger saw the entire problem through the narrow prism of securing friendship with China through the benevolence of Yahya Khan.

1. The aspirations of 75 million people in the East and the genocide unleashed on them were not important. When US Consul at Dacca, Archer Blood, accused the US Government of "moral bankruptcy" for its "posture of pretending to believe Pakistan Government's false assertions", Nixon recalled Blood and transferred him to Personnel.

2. The focus was on keeping Yahya Khan pleased since he was the conduit to the secret parley with China. US would continue to publicly support Yahya's unified Pakistan; if East Pakistan requires US support, US would decline to give such a support "based on the premise that in US opinion West Pakistan would not use force to bring a solution".

Nixon and Kissinger were amazingly consistent in "misreading" the tea leaves:

1. Kissinger theorized that India would not want an independent Bangladesh since that would induce India's West Bengal province to secede from India and unite with Bangladesh!

2. Nixon preferred to support Pakistan wherever possible because "Yahya was more decent to US than Indira Gandhi was". Kissinger agreed, "Yahya was decent and reasonable if not politically smart".

3. Kissinger felt Indian occupation of Bangladesh would make Pakistan's look like child play. When Indian army entered Dacca, Nixon asked: "You see those people welcoming the Indian troops. Why then are we going through this agony?" Kissinger replied: "To prevent the West Pakistan army from being destroyed; to retain our Chinese arm; to preserve balance of power with the Soviet Union".

Nixon had a strong bias against India. In his private conversations with Kissinger, Indians were referred to as "cowards" and "savages". Nixon tried to support Pakistan in several ways:

1. When his State department disagreed with Kissinger that US owed arms support to Pakistan (when Pakistan invoked the bilateral agreement with US and sought arms), Nixon orchestrated provision through intermediary countries. Jordan did provide aircrafts and pilots to Pakistan. Iran agreed to but rescinded in the last minute. Kissinger admitted in 1972 to China that US supplied arms via third countries. The augmentation did not have an impact.

2. Nixon urged China to move troops to the Indian border saying "The Indians have got to get a little scared". China did not oblige because of its concerns about Soviet intervention under the Indo Soviet treaty.

3. Nixon moved US Seventh fleet to Bay of Bengal to increase threat perceptions though this did not have any impact on the war.

4. Nixon warned Soviet Union that any help to India would leave a scar in US-Soviet relationship for many years after the war ended. Nixon told a visiting Soviet minister: "The Indians are cowards. They are raping and murdering. They are pretty vicious". (Historians would consider this to be a Presidential lie). Kissinger felt Nixon's statement would make Soviets reduce their support to India. They did not.

In Khasru's book, Indira Gandhi emerges as a good leader. She worked on domestic opinion before supporting Mukti Bahini. She worked on international opinion before invading East Pakistan. She read the geopolitical scenario rightly and concluded a treaty with the Soviet Union to ensure China does not start any conflict to step up pressure against India. She was firm in declining to conform to UN resolution (orchestrated by Nixon) to ceasefire and withdraw from each other's territories (the usual end for every India Pakistan war in the past).

In the end it came down to Nixon and Kissinger not reading an important import of that amazing document, the Declaration of Independence in US: "Whenever any government becomes destructive of man's inalienable rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, it was the right of the people to alter or abolish it".

Mistakes in the file for the Kindle Device

El problema es que para ser un libro en venta por parte de Kindle, viene muy mal configurado para el sistema, se salta p�rrafos, mezcla una p�gina con otra. Dif�cil de mantener una lectura fluida, demasiados errores.

The problem is that it not matter this is a book sold by kindle, exclusive for the device, but it came with to many errors, mixed pages. It's difficult to have a good reading with this kind of mistakes.

one helluva ride!

Book 2 continues where it left off. After an eventful night together, Cassidy didn't want anything to do anymore with the billionaire cowboy. But it seemed like they were destined to see each other again. Ace came to Cassidy's rescue even-though she wasn't really aware of it. The questions about their land still confused Cassidy and she wasn't getting the answers from her mom. Instead, she met Ace's daddy and discovered something new about the young cowboy.

Riding the Rough Billionaire Cowboy speaks for itself. it definitely was a rough rid but I know Cassidy enjoyed it. Bella Wild sure knew how to make this one helluva ride! Gotta get my hands on the third book!

STEAMY HOT and ALPHA…

The second book start as Cassidy getting out of his truck to go talk to her mom but now she thinking maybe a good rest in her own bed might be better before her talk with her mom. She needs to know why her mom did what she did. When she wakes up her mom gone to kill time before her mom come back home she goes for a walk to clear her head. Being that Cassidy has not been home in long time she has no clue on what dangers lie ahead and believe me when I say the Ace is not the only danger ahead for her…
Dammm Ace is STEAMY HOT and ALPHA…

Wow! So Incredibly Hot.

I received this book for free in return for an honest review. Compared to book one, we saw a little softer Ace in this book, but he was still a really hot, sexy, alpha male. The sexual chemistry is to the top between him and Cassidy, but now there seems to be more than that too. I have really enjoyed both of the books of these series. They might be short, but still well worth it.
