A "liberating, freeing, and life-giving" perspective

Summary

In the Book, The Pentateuch, A Liberation-Critical Reading, Alice Laffey, uses the liberation-critical methodology to examine key passage within the Pentateuch. According to Laffey, the liberation-critical method sets Scripture free by looking at the Bible from a viewpoint antithetical to the biblical author's culture in which the he wrote. This culture is patriarchal and hierarchical, contrary to God's desire for society. Therefore, it is Laffey's intent in this volume and subsequent series, to give the reader a "liberating, freeing, and life-giving," perspective.

In other words, this perspective does not examine biblical narrative from mankind's (the author's) viewpoint, synonymous with a world ruled by and for men. On the contrary, Laffey explains the narrative from a feminist's presupposition, emphasizing the role women have within the Bible. Additionally, she emphasizes nature's role and the animal kingdom within her selected passages from the Pentateuch. Using her own translation, Laffey covers important topics from this perspective surveying the key passages in a running commentary format in three parts (although she does not present the Scripture sequentially).

Analysis of the Strength

Laffey writes at a popular level. Her commentary style is simple and easy to follow. She clearly makes her points, while reminding her readers to interpret the biblical text within the confines of God's design for society. One example of this historical viewpoint is her explanation of Leah's rape in Genesis chapter 34. On page 99, she informs readers of the benefits for the Deuteronomic rape law. She helps the reader understand the historical context apart from his or her own contemporary misunderstanding or prejudices (which is the goal of her writing).
She writes convincingly, even subtle at times (a trait which is also considered a weakness), and in good order. By dividing the book into three parts, she is able to arrange the biblical narrative to illustrate the liberation-critical method by subject matter. Therefore, once a reader becomes accustomed to her writing style, by recognizing the general layout of the book, the reader may effortlessly cover the reading in a short period. To help solidify her perspective, she offers a full range of Scripture illustrating her methodology.
Theologically, she provides insight into human's interdependency upon nature. However, more importantly, she illustrates how God holds humankind responsible for the world; humankind should take care of, not abuse, nature. Additionally, her viewpoint reminds the reader of the importance women take place within biblical history. In effect, she is challenging the reader's attitude of the status quo of women. For although the trend has vastly improved over the last 50 years, still too often western culture places an insignificant, or lesser, value on women (more apparent in cultures worldwide). Laffey's text reminds readers women do have value and worth in the sight of God and in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Analysis of the Weaknesses

Her strength of writing at a popular level lends itself to her simplistic writing. However, she may mislead some unwary readers. When she makes dogmatic statements, she offers little or no support. For instance, on page 13, unequivocally stating the Priestly source as responsible for the creation account, she offers a commentary of the creation advocating theistic evolution. The careless reader may not recognize her subtleness in both the acceptance of the Priestly source and of theistic evolution. This approach seems contrary to her careful delineation of the liberation-critical methodology found within the introduction. In this example, Laffey does not afford the reader an explanation for her stance or the opportunity to understand opposing arguments. Instead, Laffey gives herself carte blanch to indoctrinate the reader without any education.
Another example of her subtleness is the use of her own translation, which she casually admits to at some point within her book. This too can lead some readers to follow her interpretation without first thinking.

On page 82, she writes her translation of Genesis 3:16, "...in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." Notice her translation's subtle use of the conjunctive yet. This is in contrast to the majority of English texts which omit the conjunctive, treating the verse as two different clauses, "in pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband." Her translation is suspect for it fits too well within her hierarchical paradigm. It begs the question of whether she presupposed her own values and beliefs into the text, eisegesis, instead of using good use of exegesis.

One more example illustrates a similar weakness, where Laffey fails again to give any other explanation other than her own commentary. On page 130, writing about God and man's relationship to nature, she subtly writes the plagues in Exodus as "traditionally described as miracles..." Instead, she labels the plagues as unusual natural disasters. Rather than looking at all possibilities for the plagues (miracles, natural events caused by God, etc.) she fails to discuss fully these events. Instead she quickly dismisses the events, valid or not, as irrelevant to her point. Meanwhile, she already made another point; maybe there is some embellishment on the author's account of the actual events.

Lastly, unless a reader is really in tune with the liberation-critical methodology, the reader can quickly lose his or her interest in the book. Any reader, familiar with the biblical narrative Laffey uses, can quickly scan through the Scripture and logical guess where Laffey's points head. Perhaps this is her intention, to keep things simple and clear, to the point. Maybe she over simplifies. For instance on page 126 she writes, "Human person ..." Are not all human beings persons? However consistent in the simplistic nature of her book, the text drags onward, especially when Laffey's points become redundant without saying anything new or substantial.

Contributions of the Book

Many liberal authors have written about the Bible ranging from ethics to Laffey's liberation-critical method in The Pentateuch. For the seminary student, or anyone else interested in different opinions about Scripture, Laffey's book offers a viewpoint not often mentioned in conservative circles, the feminist perspective. Yet, if the preacher is to understand his listeners in a postmodern culture, such writings become valuable. From the skeptic to the sincere at heart, on any given Sunday morning a preacher may stand behind the pulpit to bring God's Word, only to find this wide variety of attitudes.

The Pentateuch allows the preacher or teacher to understand and appreciate (not necessarily agree) these different viewpoints. In fact, because the church is a cross section of society, there just may be people within a particular church who hold a feminist and liberal theological mindset. As such, being sensitive to such viewpoints helps a preacher to meet people where they are, bringing them to a better understanding of their relationship with God.

Great book

On my shelves I probably have 75% of the books Rod Stephens has written over the years. A large body of work that I have collected because they are always useful. I own the Visual Basic 6 Bug Proofing book and assumed that the Beginning Software Engineering book would be in a similar vein, just not specific to one language. This is a much more expansive book that for someone writing software for twenty plus years, I can find sage advice and ways to improve what we are currently doing for QA/QC and developmental processes. The text is kept readable by drawing upon the experiences of the author as examples. Sure the beginner will be well prepared by reading this, but veterans are likely to find at least one thing in here, that is well explained, that you can adopt to improve your established software engineering process. In other words if you are writing software, buy a copy, read it, use it. The author makes a very valid point that you need to spend the money on good software tools for software developers. That investment compared to the money developers receive for the hours they work is money well spent. Same goes for this book. Well worth the investment of money and time to read it IF you use the guidance to conduct, manage and run projects it provides.

The worst solution is not to choose any

(A preamble to the notion of Software Engineering). Software Engineering, is an arcane, heady topic, with swimming pools of ink, and several forests of paper dedicated to it, during the last 35 years or so. It is more of a belief system than an engineering discipline, or as an electrical engineer once said to me in 1973 “witchcraft”. (For 1973 he was correct!) This book was a stroll down memory lane for me, because I have been a developer since 1972, and still going strong (geriatric) today. I have been strongly attracted toward some of the techniques and organization of, or methodology for developing software. I have read most of the original tomes as they were first written, and I still have most of them. Ron’s book is rather small considering what it covers.
Ron Stevens illustrates how it should be done, where most of the stakes should be driven into the ground, and in most cases, several variations and techniques for each phase. All of these have their pluses and minuses. The worst solution is not to choose any. You will come away with the notion that software engineering perpetuates massive paper work, and it does, or more likely it did. If you piled up all the blueprints of the space shuttle, or plotted out all the traces on the latest CPU chip, the Amazon rain forest would be diminished by the size of Rhode Island. Yet these requirements are accommodated in other engineering disciplines. Software engineering is everything you wanted to know about building a small modular city of code. All of the questions asked and answered, designed and laid out. Now, on with it.
Question: “Is Sofia Loren attractive?” Answer: “She weighs 54480 grams!” Is the White Star Liner “Titanic” big? She has more life boats than any other passenger liner! What is the spectral wavelength of the color “purple?” Questions asked and answered with real facts or metrics. The story about the seven blind men examining an elephant with their hands, and coming away with seven different answers and impressions about the elephant, depending on where they were standing, sums it up out side of formal documents.
Software development is more of an art form, than say, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Software engineering is the building of a text blue print or text circuit schematic which is the guide to the construction of software. Software is implemented in text, in response to a stated need, which can be interpreted in many different ways. Ron’s chapters guide you through all the various stages and levels, and specifies the various techniques which address these issues.
I have at least five of Rod Stevens books and the code in in his books is outstanding (or at least his code style and organization can be on anyone’s short list.) I got this book on the pre-order form and sat down and read it back to back. Twice. Rod’s engineering book is outstanding also, being more of a tour guide through the battlefield of techniques and applications of code development. Most of the battles are about which technique is “better” but all are subjective and have valid points.
Rod starts out with a high level observation of software development illustrating the steps: requirements, high level design, low level design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, and wrap up.
He then proceeds through all the steps just enumerated above, with all the software packages of tools which more or less help the process along the way. “More or less” was not sarcastic, for these packages are good at implementing the scope of what they do, but like the blind men and the elephant you come away with that particular measurement on that particular measuring context.
Rod’s style of writing in this book is darkly humorous and on occasion sarcastic. Considering the subject, It's quite an entertaining reading compared with the alternatives I've checked. The author makes plenty of jokes that I think make the subjects less dull.
The book also contains many exercises and their solutions.
I'm no expert, but I think it's a great introduction to the subject.

I really enjoyed this one

When an author produces as many books as Mr Crane, an ongoing concern is whether or not he can keep the story fresh. I don't know why I worried.

This story seemed to me to have a different feel from Sienna. Less melancholy and insecure.

Added to that, frustrating characters who, quite frankly need at least one good shake or at the very least, a stern talking to, together with a worthy opponent and other such good stuff which I'm not going to talk about because, well, spoilers.

My one comment? Kat’s change seemed very rapid. But then I guess metas are all about speed…

I have to say, I really enjoyed this one. The dilemma Sienna faces all the time – made me think. And I suspect that, despite the opportunities being offered to her, her problems may be about to get worse... and I can't wait to read all about it.

I love the character development for Kat especially

I have always been a big fan of Robert J Crane and this book does it again! Sienna develops more in this book and is changing all the time. I love the character development for Kat especially. SPOILER: She stops being a shallow ditz to an extent.

Enjoyable, but Not the Best of the Series

There are a lot of these books now, and while the author's done an amazing job at generally keeping them fresh, interesting, and coherent, I feel that he slipped a bit on this one.

On the upside, Sienna's snark was superb in this book and I actually laughed out loud several times.

On the downside, while Sienna's a superb character, her psychological travails of trying to find the balance between human and inhuman, tough but caring, willing to kill when needed but knowing when to draw the line, etc. seemed kinda repetitive, both within this book and in conjunction with the rest of the series. I found some of the characters (e.g. "Guy Friday") simply cartoonish and undeveloped and it detracted from the flow for me. Kat Forrest is a major character in this book and she's utterly unlikable, though while I didn't like the unlikability, I did find the development of her character well done.

There were also a couple of things I found that were inconsistent and that was distracting as well (I'm not going to describe them because they'd be spoilers).

Ultimately, it always good to read more about the girl out of the box, and overall I did enjoy the book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

This is the best book on drawing that I have seen. I have read through the book several times and now I am going through page by page and practicing each step. His instructions are clear and easy to follow with drawings to help illustrate each step.

It's Just That No One Taught You How

I took oil painting classes from Bill Martin 40 years ago and still think of him as the best art teacher I ever had. Why? Because he had a knack for laying out an organized and readily understandable structure...step by step. One of those steps is drawing. Don't think you can't draw; it's just that no one taught you the basics. How wonderful that Bill Martin wrote it all down...that his gift for teaching lives on. Plus he was such a good guy. Now all you have to do is practice, practice, practice.

Still Relevant in 2003!!

but the lessons on those pages are taught with such clarity they will stick with you and help when you go further with your talents into areas like colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics or even oils.
The lessons include things like perspective, a lesson taught in just about every book on art written today. It seems so many books cover this topic because it is such a hard topic to teach - notice I say teach and not learn. If it was easy to teach then more of us would learn it and would not have such a hard time with the concept. Bill Martin has touched something in his lessons on perspective, at least for me, and I will never have the same difficulty with perspective again. At least if I do in the future, I will have this little gem to pick up and refer to! He does not cover this topic quickly, but goes into it slowly and covers it quite completely, as he does most difficult topics. I will no sell the four or five books on my shelves devoted to perspective, books purchased to help clarify a topic once so unclear.
The only downside about his book is the section on color theory, which could be much more indepth. There is only a small chapter covering it at the end, almost as though it was an afterthought. It would have been great to see Mr. Martin tackle the important and often difficult topic of color with the same skill he had handled perspective and so many others in this great little book!

New E-book only accessible if you also have a "Course code"

This book and CD set is sold as an ebook with an access code that you do get when you open the packaging. The publisher wants to make sure no one reuses the code, so they also require a "course code" when you go online to gain access to open the ebook. Well, my son was in a high school class that requires the hardback, but not the CD. I thought he lugs around enough heavy textbooks, so I thought I'd spend the extra money for the ebook for him since he carries an iPad, also. Unfortunately the publisher's customer service department was not able to help us gain access to the ebook without this magic "course" code. (Don't know why they don't have a generic one that could be use for just such situations.) Anyway, you don't want to buy this version for the ebook unless your teacher / professor uses the MyCompLab whole set up. The other way the publisher could prevent the reuse of the CD access code they send in the packaging is to issue unique codes on every new CD. Boom. Done. No problem, no "course code" required. How about it, Little, Brown?

This book defines comprehensive!

Of the several editions of the Little, Brown Handbook I've owned (I buy the odd-numbered editions) and read cover-to-cover over the years, this (11th) edition will answer almost any question you have about writing. My last edition was the 9th and this one is significantly better, with better layout and colors to make every element on the page easier to read, even diacritical marks. Unfortunately, with purchase you are not given access to the companion website[...], and the book's own preface does not recommend the site. Pearson has plastered the website ad in every chapter, in a special section of the book, and on the back cover. Completely unnecessary and no class.

If you're going to get an English handbook, start with Little, Brown. But also get the definitive source, The Chicago Manual of Style, which also includes several chapters on punctuation, grammar, and style. Finally, round out your education with Joseph M. Williams' Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace.

The Little Brown Handbook

This is a great reference book for anyone with grammar questions. The index and page layouts are brillantly designed by the Parsons School of Design, and it shows on every page. I have never found a reference book so easy to navigate. The book is small (mine is 5.5" X 8.5") AND amazingly lightweight for 800 pages . The binding is strong and the book lays comfortably open as you use it. YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK. I buy it for every writing job I take. This is my third copy.

Very Detailed, Beautifully Written & Illustrated

Disclaimer: I am casually acquainted with one of the authors (R.L.) via a photography forum, and one of my images is included in this book. However, I feel that neither of these issues preclude me from offering an honest critique.

I was at first struck by the size of this book: with 500+ pages, it is an encyclopedia! But the volume of this book is appropriate for its broad, technical scope. The book addresses the physiological aspects of seeing, and the refinement of print tonality... and everything in between. Consistent with the modern context, the reader will also find a thorough treatment of all the digital, hybrid, and traditional tools. With a strong emphasis on clarifying techniques, this book is *very* thoroughly illustrated. Hardly a page is without an example, an illustration or a graph. In addition, numerous tables and templates are found in an appendix. It's literally impossible for me to locate a technical topic that wasn't appropriately described. Yes, MTF, dry down, transmittance etc. are all given full schrift!

The risk that the authors take with this book is to overwhelm the reader with the technical scope, with insufficient treatment of the creative aspects that must always drive the successful craft. Indeed the book contains ~90% technical content. There is a small section on visualization, and a larger "On Assignment" section with narrated examples, but the reader will not find much discussion of fundamental issues such as: what distinguishes black and white photography as an art form; why black and white is effective in some cases for which color photography is not; and the special role of certain abstract graphical elements in the black and white craft.

For my own taste, there could and probably should be more weight given to these qualitative aspects, and for that reason my rating of this book is not perfect. That said, I realize that most readers expect and appreciate the technical guidance... and abstract statements about the unique effectiveness of black and white photography are probably best made with photographs rather than words!

Overall, this book is a real achievement- an authoritative reference that will be widely cited for many years to come. I recommend it very highly, and note that the low price is a very pleasant surprise, given the volume of very useful information. I am certain that this book will be at least as successful as the first edition, which is also very highly regarded.

Great text book for mid and advanced photographers

This is clearly not a book written for beginners. There are plenty of books for beginners with how-to and step-by-step instructions. However; once one graduates from such books, one is hard pressed to find anything that takes him/her further. Sporadic information are available in books and internet but nothing concise that presents these information in relevant manner. This book does just that.

Please note, this books is all about film photography. Digital photography is mentioned but only in relation to analog photography. If you are not interested in film, this is not a book for you!

Way beyond monochrome is written in a format of college textbooks for advanced scientific/engineering fields. It starts out slowly but soon, pages are filled with advanced topics and discussions, charts, graphs, and formulas. One can comprehend the topic but good understanding in early college level mathematics help immensely. Some chapters are independent and some flows into more advanced methods/topics in following chapters - very much like college textbooks.

This book is unusual in a way that while it is a book for art, photographic art, but the approach is very scientific. When many photography books might say something is a "bit darker", in this book, it is said 1/3EV darker, for example. Elsewhere, author shows what 1/3 EV difference looks like in prints, explains 1/3EV is understood to be a "significant change" and how much change in contrast and exposure is needed to achieve this change. In fact, there are charts and formulas to explain how this all comes together. For someone (like me) who struggled to achieve consistent change in various timing and contrast scenario, understanding on how to do this precisely - every time - without endless trials and errors - is beyond wonderful.

If I were to criticize this book, I think, a bit less (not much less, please) scientific approach may be appropriate - especially considering this is a book about photographic art. It may broaden the audience a bit that those who approach photography from right side of his/her brain may appreciate the content more. I am leaving 5 stars as author's approach works for me very well.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who spent a year or more in darkroom and want to advance his/her skills.

Way Beyond Monochrome - Way Beyond the Usual

This is a review for the 2nd edition of this book.

This book just arrived today, and I have been joyously flipping through its pages all afternoon! I'm an amateur photographer, having been bitten by the bug in college, and have a hobby darkroom set up in my house. I have never taken it too seriously, it's enough for me to simply enjoy the peace and solitude of the darkroom and to geek-out on all of the technical aspects of traditional black and white printing.

Of course I'd like to be more confident in the darkroom, and so much of my good work feels like it came about more by accident than by actually knowing what I was doing. I'd like to think that this book is going to help me in that.

This book is not recommended as a beginner's text. It assumes you know your way around the darkroom and know a bit about shooting and processing film. There are plenty of books to start you on the basics (Ansel Adams' book series, also Henry Horenstein's book "Black & White Photography, A Basic Manual"), but this book really takes it a step further by guiding you through the more advanced, nuanced areas of expert shooting and printing. Some of the topics covered in the book include creating unsharp masks, digital negatives, paper and print contrast, split-grade printing, paper flashing, print bleaching, print retouching, and all kinds of other tips and tricks and projects. I can't believe how well laid out this book is, and many of the techniques I was completely unaware of.

The actual production quality of the nook is amazing, too. There are hundreds of illustrations, examples, diagrams and graphs to help clarify the topics. The photographic examples are extremely well done, and the print quality is very high. This is a book people will ask to borrow from your library, and I guarantee you'll be evaluating your friendship before you lend it out to anyone! Seriously though, this is a book that is going to last. It's built like one of those bulletproof college textbooks, but it is beautifully and thoughtfully laid out.

To close, I'd like to suggest that anyone who is perhaps like me, very familiar to film photography and darkroom printing, but want to elevate their understanding of the art, please do not hesitate to buy this book. It is one of the most elegant, concise, and thorough texts on the art of photography, and it should not be missed!

About the Author
Philippe Jorion is Professor of Finance at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California at Irvine. He holds an MBA and a PhD from the University of Chicago and a degree in engineering from the University of Brussels. Dr. Jorion has authored more than eighty publications--directed towards academics and practitioners--on the topic of risk management and international finance. He is on the editorial board of a number of financial journals and was editor of the "Journal of Risk," He has won the Smith Breeden Prize for research, the William F. Sharpe Award for Scholarship in Financial Research, and the Graham and Dodd Scroll Award. this is the Mt. Everest of books on Christ's life

I just finished a 2.5 yr concentrated study on Christ's life for an advanced class that I teach. My library on Christ's life went from 25 books to over 200. And now that the study is over I am fully convinced that Mark Moore's 2 volume set is the finest thing ever written outside of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Shephard, Pentecost, Foster, Morgan, Spurgeon, Andrews, Keller and a ton of others are fine books, but a very distant 2nd place to Moore's work. His scholarship is current and DEEP, yet he writes in a very readable, contemporary style. If you don't have this 2 volume set, you need to get it. When? NOW! Remember, as a Christian it is more important to know and understand more about JESUS than any other religious or biblical subject. And if your library doesn't contain Moore's set, it is missing the finest resource available outside of the gospels themselves. God bless. Mike

Review of The Chronological Life of Christ

A well written and factual book. It is not just dry fact but a comparison of the four gospels written in chronogolical order. The reader gets a great insight to the life of Christ and what He went through in the early years of His life on earth. The companion book "From Galilee to Glory" written by the same author takes the reader on to the finish of His life on the cross.
