Better than expected

While this certainly should not be the only resource used to prepare for the CCS portion of the exam, it may be useful for some.

I understand that this book may not be necessary for everyone who is preparing for Step 3 (especially current residents), but it may be useful to those who are looking to review the management protocols of the pathologies most commonly tested on CCS. I have found this book useful in that regard. It is set up very nicely and tells you what the ideal and optional management should be for each case.

Best CCS-specific book I have found to date.

Update: I passed Step 3 on the first attempt, with a CCS score that was well in the passing range. I am an IMG/FMG with no residency experience and used several sources (including this book) to prepare for the CCS. It was a nice compliment to the practice banks and was good for a quick nightly review of similar cases that I had practiced during the day.

Great book for teaching the CCS

I am a psychiatry resident, which means I didn't spend a lot of time managing most of the conditions that are tested on CCS. This book has over 100 cases to review. It explains the likely diagnosis from just the presenting symptoms. It also tells you how to approach each case in order to maximize points in the CCS. I highly recommend this book, in conjunction with computer simulations (e.g. U-world), for preparing for the CCS. I used the Kindle version, which is great for reviewing cases when you are on call.

About the Author
Dr. Duane Lakin is a consulting psychologist with over 25 years of experience consulting to businesses and training people in how to use NLP (neurolinguistic programming) to see real results from their efforts. He has helped companies in the US, UK, Canada, Russia, Hungary, and Italy learn to speak and write more effectively and get better results from their sales and marketing efforts.

This sales book does what it advertises

I immediately liked the book when I read the Preface, which is about being able to sell exactly as the customer needs it. I couldn't agree more, even if I have been running intro trouble with 50% of the salespeople I met when trying to convince them of that kind of thinking.
Let me first tell you what this is NOT. - if you want a book that applies my favorite aspect of NLP, cognitive styles (metaprograms), to Sales, I'd recommend "Selling the way your customer buys" by Marvin Sadovsky & Jon Caswell.
- Or if you want a book discussing (theoretical) how to apply ALL NLP models to sales, I'd rather recommend other books, such as Genie Laborde's classic "Influencing with Integrity", etc. However all these books tend to suffer from the same problem: it's hard to translate their message into practice, because they lack exercises.
But if the two previous things aren't what you're looking for, this might be the book for you.
How does it compare to other NLP books? If the book doesn't cover ALL of NLP, it has the advantage that it is much more practical. You really can use it as a workbook (as the author promises). I guess that a trainer could do a 2 or 3-day workshop to teach salespeople to *really* master this material. Let me tell you what it includes: It will help you understand how to recognize and use different representation systems (Visual-Auditory-Kinesthetic), buying strategies and non verbal mirroring. As for the NLP language skills, it concentrates action language and action commands.
If the author wants to improve his book, I would recommend adding other NLP models (such as meta-program's and the meta-model). But to remain as practical, that would boil down to writing a second volume or make this one double the size.
As for the price: yes it's expensive. So is following a workshop. If you don't use any NLP yet, I agree that the book will pay back for itself if you apply these principles."...

The best "invisible" selling system that really works

It's tough to find selling stuff that works but doesn't sound like some cornball, canned routine out of a used car showroom. That's because talking in a natural-sounding way is rarely effective in high-powered selling.
Yet when you start to deal with the big players and big deals, sounding genuine and authentic is the *only* thing that works. All top sales professionals and wheeler-dealers know this.
Duane Lakin has come up with the first training and language system I have seen that will improve your effectiveness selling to anyone. I know because I've used his techniques with large-dollar sales and seen my results improve. I've also reviewed all the other sales trainers who use NLP as part of their method. Some are very good, but no one comes close to Duane in terms of a transparent, deceptively simple set of methods you can quickly learn and use.
One thing that's great about his book is he also shows you how to apply NLP to telemarketing and writing sales copy. I don't know of anyone else who's done that.
A lot of people interested in sales and NLP think something has to be flashy, complex and technically overwhelming to be any good. As someone who makes his living because of the results he gets, I can tell you that just the opposite is true. Fortunately, this book contains what you need to get better results and still come across like a human being. That's rare and extraordinarily valuable.

A compelling value. Money well spent!

I have read the Unfair Advantage from cover to cover several times. More importantly, I have experienced results, based on the lessons you will learn in this book, that have been amazing. If you want great literature, don't buy the Unfair Advantage, consider War and Peace. If you want great results in your interpersonal skills and feel that a higher closing ratio sounds like something you want to read about, get the Unfair Advantage.
This is my first review to Amazon.com. I have read several books that flirt with making NLP a concrete and usable sales tool. This is the first book that I have found worthy enough for me to share an opinion on.

About the Author
Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. He is among the world’s leading economists, having made fundamental contributions in several major fields as well as in game theory. He is the author of many books, including Dixit/Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically (Norton, 1991), Dixit/Pindyck: Investment Under Uncertainty (Princeton University Press, 1994), and Dixit/Nalebuff: The Art of Strategy (Norton, 2009).

David Reiley is a research scientist at Google. He previously taught at Vanderbilt, Northwestern, and the University of Arizona. He is well known for his use of field experiments in economic research.

Susan Skeath is Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, where she teaches a number of courses in microeconomics and a course in game theory, which she introduced into the school’s curriculum. She conducts research in international trade theory, and is currently working on a new Intermediate Microeconomics text with her colleague Ann Velenchik. Professor Skeath earned her doctorate at Princeton University.

Very Well Written for its Intended Audience

Now in its third edition, this book has become one of the standards used for a general introduction to game theory at the beginning college level. In this edition the authors (with the addition of David Reiley) have maintained their philosophy of using situations commonly understood by college students (dating, taking tests, historical situations) to illustrate the commonly understood games.

Virtually each chapter has been changed at least minimally, and some chapters have seen extensive changes that reflect more recent changes in game theory. One such area of major change is the treatment of information in games and its subtopic mechanism design. This area was a subject of research for which the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded. These changes have required major rewriting of several chapters and the creation of a new chapter.

Consistent with the earlier editions, this book is very well written in a manor that the beginning college student can appreciate and the mathematical content is very low as is fitting for an introductory book.

A good introduction to game-theory

As a non-mathematical graduate student who still needs an appreciation of game-theory I found this book to be highly enlightening. The concepts and framework of the field is explained verbally, which is preferable for those that require an appreciation for, rather than a complete understanding of, game theory. A number of applications for game theory are also discussed that serve to demonstrate the broad applicability of the field.

Overall, I would suggest that this book is a suitable alternative for an
introductory course in game theory. I therefore recommend it to those who need to use or appreciate game theory without needing to have a thorough grasp of the mathematics. Alternatively, it would also make a good introductory text for those just starting out. However, while this book may be preferable to those who are not game-theorists by trade or those who are just beginning their study, it may be too broad and unsuitable for those who require a deeper understanding.

Confusing for Any Student Regardless of Level

I am a doctoral candidate in economics and I gained exposure to this book while trying to help an undergraduate friend with her game theory course taught by one of the authors. From what I read, the body of the textbook is satisfactory, despite poorly formatted equations and numerical examples.

The failing of this textbook is however in the unnecessarily convoluted and poorly worded examples and exercises. The discipline is challenging enough as is and it is only made worse when it is so difficult to comprehend what the exercises are asking you to answer. This sounds rather harsh, but it's extremely frustrating to not be able use this textbook to demonstrate the material when I already have a solid understanding of it. I would have simply used another textbook, but as I mentioned the student was being taught by one of the authors.

An unsatisfactory effort from a very good economist in Dixit. I would recommend the Rasmusen text instead for an introductory game theory class.

A LOVING TRIBUTE TO MOM...

This book is, indeed, a tribute to the author's mother. In it, the author, a man whose mother was white and his father black, tells two stories: that of his mother and his own. Tautly written in spare, clear prose, it is a wonderful story of a bi-racial family who succeeded and achieved the American dream, despite the societal obstacles placed in its way.

The author's mother was a Polish Orthodox Jew who migrated to America at the age of two with her family during the early nineteen twenties. They ultimately settled down in Virginia, where she led an isolated and lonely life; shunned by whites because she was Jewish and shunned by blacks because she was white. She was raised in a predominantly black neighborhood, where her father, a despicable and harsh man who brutalized his handicapped wife, ran a local grocery store, where he priced gouged his black clientele.

She left home and moved to New York when she was nineteen and never looked back. She met and married the author's father, a black man, when mixed race marriages were still frowned upon by both whites and blacks. Still, she always felt more comfortable around blacks than around whites. When he died sixteen years later, she married another black man who nurtured her eight children by the author's father and proceeded to give her four more children.

The author tells of his childhood, of his family, and of the issue of race that ultimately colored his life while growing up in predominantly black neighborhoods, where his mother stood out like a sore thumb because of the color of her skin. It was always an issue his mother avoided discussing with him, as for her it was not an issue. It was not until the author wrote this book that his mother discussed the issue of race within the context of her own life. From this dialogue emerges a fascinating look at the issues of race, as well as religion, and how it impacts on an individual's identity within our race conscious society.

It is also a very personal story. While the author's family was economically disadvantaged, his eccentric and independent mother always stressed education. She was a strict disciplinarian who brooked no nonsense from her twelve children. A convert to Christianity through her first husband, with whom she founded a Baptist church, she provided her children with the will to succeed. Consequently, all twelve eventually went to college and did her proud. The story of this unique family is told from two distinct, parallel perspectives: that of the author and that of his mother. While both are interesting, it is his mother's story that dominates this beautifully written book, which is, indeed, a tribute to her. It is truly a story told from the heart, as the love that the author has for his mother is evident with every written word.

Keeping His Distance

Subtitled "A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother," this book is exactly that -- a man's account of his research into his mother's background. McBride's mother raised twelve fantastically successful children despite enormous obstacles. Unfortunately, McBride seems to value resume-type accomplishments more than ones of character. He tells us every degree earned by his brothers and sisters, but very little about them as people. What type of personalities do they have? Who are their families? What are their passions? I would have liked to have known.
McBride takes a removed stance, as if it were somebody else's family that he was assigned to report on. His background in journalism may help explain the odd distance McBride maintains.
In the end, I knew a lot about the details of his mother's life, but little of her inner existence. Perhaps this limited amount was all that McBride could tell. Perhaps all we really know about people is what they present to the outside world. Despite the altnerating points of view (McBride alternates chapters as "himself" and "his mother") McBride never climbs far enough into his mother's head to make her seem real to me.
My favorite scene: McBride's mother speaks at a church celebration/reunion. Overcome by emotion, she throws away her notes and speaks ad lib, from the heart. I wish that McBride had followed her lead when writing this book.

Been hacked, been fixed, by Bob himself

As a satisfied customer, reviewer of this book, and friend of Bob, I can recommend this book wholeheartedly. I was an overworked sysadmin and biochemist researcher at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia in November 2000, when the 27 SGI systems I was in charge of were hacked into. We were set up as a node waiting to implement a denial of service or remote attack on some other poor sobs. I hadn't been able to keep up with patches due to a heavy workload so the attackers got in easily thru a hole in telnetd. I yelled for help on the [...] listserv and Bob, a local member, responded. We've been locked down ever since then by Bob with hardened Linux firewalls running a VPN. Thanks to his expertise we haven't had any successful attacks since. In fact, no one can find us unless we let them. I simply don't have to deal with security problems anymore on those systems. It was my pleasure to help Bob with reviewing the manuscript for ease of understanding, readability, and double checking for typo's. I can't say enough about Bob as a person. I can trust him completely and do everyday with the security of my systems. I use his book as a reference tool constantly on security topics. It is much better than any other book in this genre for what it provides. In my opinion, for what that is worth ;-) it is the only security book for Linux that really touches on everything. Talking with Bob about the book is always alot of fun since I usually learn something new every time. If you already have the 1st edition, give it to someone else as a gift and get this one. Don't expect everything to be new as most security info hasn't changed all that much. For the new info, such as iptables, this book will be what you need, but will still contain the reference info you will always go back to check. I highly recommend this book, but even more so, I recommend you let Fly-by-Day Consulting work with you on securing your network. I certainly am glad I did.

Belongs on your bookshelf

This book has been updated well. Not just some cut and paste from a previous edition. The first edition was excellent. This edition is even better. The writing is some the best I've ever read in a technical book. Secrets & Lies is the concept book and this is the application of those concepts. This should between your Bruce Schneier books and your O'reilly Systems books.
If you are a Security Professional, Systems Administrator or a wannabe this book belongs on your bookshelf. The topics are broad and yet fairly in depth. Even if you think you know security get this book. The information is organized that well.
You can use this book to harden just about *nix flavor machine based on his examples. The attack processes illustrated will reinforce your existing knowledge or teach how you need to start thinking about security.
Bottom line is security has many layers or rings. If one ring fails hopefully you have several other rings of protection. Don't rely on a firewall to protect you. Firewalls only scratch the surface in building a secure enviroment.

In this second edition of his excellent and helpful guide to Linux security, Toxen once again avoids the trap of padding the book with page after page of arcane code. Sections on constructing firewalls with IP Chains or IP Tables have been updated. The extensive index of resources in the back has also been updated, and new sections have been added in the text as well. It's still a great practical guide, and also (as in the first edition) contains a CD with useful programs on it. Still worth your money!

As much fun 40 years on as these pieces were when they burst like fireworks in the complacent faces of New York's chicest readers. Wolfe was at his most rascally and subversive of liberal verities and vanities in these essays; you almost have to tune out the devilish wit and pile-driving energy of his prose to make sure you don't miss what was then and still is some of the most astute, prophetic writing about the trajectory of bourgeois suppositions guiding culture change in America. Wolfe once wrote that what New York needed was simpler people, and here he is, carrying the flag, sharp end out, for a more down-to-earth urbanity right into the city's most fatuous scrums: art collecting, big-time writing, the make-or-break of the party circuit.

Enough About Wolfe, What about Me!

No one can say that Mr. Wolfe keeps his opinions to himself and unlike the talking heads, tv pundits, or (dare I say it) the writers from The New Yorker, he does illustrate a certain renaissance charm and keen observations Such as picking exactly the right fact to buttress his view.

To get to the point he is one of, if not the, better essayists of our time, agree or disagree, you might like what he says but you cannot fault how he says it, a brilliant stylist. If you want to revisit to anti-profundities of the seventies and understand what happened, this is the book for you.

Forgive me

Tom Wolf is a great writer. I have been spoiled by reading: The Right Stuff, A self made Man, and Bonfire of the Vanities. But this is not fiction, it is a review of culture and trends. It is a venue where his discriptive abilities at times overwhelm what he has to say. Had I been more into the culture he was evaluating I would consider this book great writing. If you love reading about near past New York culture, by all means, read it.

"Long live our holy Germany" were the last words of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on the night of July 20, 1944. Peter Hoffmann's magnificient book is a salute to the Stauffenberg brothers and most importantly Claus von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg was the real thing, a man of deep Christian principles and extradionary courage who knew that the future of Germany was more important than his life and the life of his fellow conspirators. He made the ultimate sacrifice so that others could live in freedom. Stauffenberg is not only a hero of Germany, but of anyone on earth who loves freedom and respects the laws of God and humanity. Stauffenberg was Germany's guardian angel, who attempted to save his nation and slay the man he deemed "the antichrist." Doctor Hoffmann paints a wonderful picture of Stauffenberg's early life and military career. He then moves into minute detail of the plot to kill Hitler and the man whom fate had chosen to lead it. Simply a great scholastic achievement.

The ultimate Stauffenberg biography.

Peter Hoffmann's biography of Stauffenberg is the best anyone is likely to write on the subject. The book comprehensively assesses all primary sources hitherto used by Stauffenberg's previous biographers, plus many additional sources which the author himself found. Hoffmann's previous books, among them 'THE HISTORY OF THE GERMAN RESISTANCE, 1933-1945', and 'HITLER'S PERSONAL SECURITY' serve as a foundation to this work which, all told, spans 30 years of scholarly research. As the depth and breadth of this study eclipses any other attempt to date, its conclusions are unassailably judicious. Thus, Hoffmann's 'STAUFFENBERG' has made perhaps the most definitive contribution to the historical field of resistance to the Third Reich.

Aside from being the single man in history to make several (and one very famous) attempts on the life of Adolf Hitler, Claus Von Stauffenberg was a unique guy.

Born in 1907 to Prussian aristocracy, Stauffenberg was playing the cello, reciting Shakespeare, and taking an interest in Catholic theology
by the age of exactly 12. Had he made a career out of any of these three, his fate would have been less cruel. Claus Von Stauffenberg, though, was a born soldier.

Ultimately becoming a General Staff officer in the German Abwehr, Stauffenberg and his brothers Berthold and Alexander still made considerable time for poet Stefan George, and were part of his "Secret Germany", a quasi-mystical poetic cult of sorts which worshipped George as "Master, and the three brothers were were prophesied by the poet manque as the future leaders of the Fatherland. Goethe, Holderlin, Rilke and Nietzsche were heralded as the predecessors of the movement. The problem with the entire affair was that George was not very talented and his literary salon was composed mostly of teenage boys.

Despite George, the slow but sure rise of the Third Reich (which, like most Germans, Stauffenberg initially welcomed and his inevitable participation in nearly all of Germany's military campaigns, Claus Von Stauffenberg always retained an odd detachment from his surroundings and a sense of self which was very strong.

The sheer wealth and richness of not only Stauffenberg's life, but the life of his wealthy and somewhat sheltered family--his career as a decorated soldier in the Wehrmacht, his prestige as a model, and as head of the General Staff office--makes his brutal death in front of the Bendleerstrasse in Germany a surreal and bizarre turn of events.

Stauffenberg was aware of Germany's imminent defeat, yet as early as 1942 he was making some quit imprudent remarks about the Fuhrer: "In August 1942 Stauffenberg told Major Joachim Kuhn, a close friend, that the treatment of the Jews and other civilians was monstrous, *that Hitler had lied about the cause of the war*, and that he had to be removed. He then shouted: "They are shooting Jews in the masses. These crimes must not be allowed to continue!"

Then in in another outbrust which later got him arrested, news of more atrocities sparked Stauffenberg to scream in front of SS and general staff alike:"Does not one German soldier have the courage to shoot that pig?"

Attempt after attempt failed; Stauffenberg was regularly seen carrying a "remarkably plump briefcase" (as Albert Speer put it) to three different meetings in Hitler's "Wolf's Lair" in Prussia. Once Hitler did not show up: the second time Stauffenberg's incompetent superiors instructed him to not to set the fuse, and the third time the bomb exploded and by sheer chance did not kill Hitler.

Even in the face of the Gestapo's considerable wrath, Stauffenberg did his best to get the coup de'etat to to succeed. In a most fortunate turn of events for Stauffenberg, probably, a General Staff officer involved in the plot turned on the other plotters and had a handful of them, Claus included, shot on the night of July 20, 1944.

Why? Why was such a priviliged and wealthy figure in the German army who would certainly never have been charged with war crimes choose to sacrifice his life, the life of his family and friends, in an attempt so tenuous and fraught with uncertainty?

The answer, I think, lies in Stauffenberg's unbelievable bravery, sense of common decency, and Christian background. Without these things he may indeed have been a terrifying force for the Third Reich. He could no longer stomach what was going on around him. Peter Hoffmann here gives the definitive biography of this heroic man who embodies perhaps the most inspiring example of "what might have been" in history. A must read.

Alpha Male

Here's a book every woman should read! While the best-selling guys' book tells how to get women in bed and dump them, this book shows women how to avoid these bad-news guys and find a man who will be a great husband, father, and life-long companion. It's fascinating to see what men have to say about what they want in a wife -- and it's not hard to follow the authors advice and start looking for the right kind of guy. Wish I'd had this book years ago!

The Best Match

I enjoy reading in the genre on relationships, including all the recent classics, and have read tons of books over the past few years, but this is the book that has best connected with me and inspired me thus far. It fits best with who I am and have always been. The "type" of man with whom one ends up needs to be taken seriously, for he can shape and define one's quality of life in so many ways, and the lives of any children one has with him. I feel that I am in the best and most mature position that I've ever been in when it comes to making choices about relationships and am able to make them with 20-20 vision. Every woman gets to this position in life at a certain point, sooner or later, and I'm glad that in my case it's sooner. I don't agree with the theories that suggest that an alpha woman is best off with a beta man, and this book certainly clarifies why that's not true. For the alpha guy will best appreciate-and deserve-the talents that the alpha female has to offer-not only as a professional, but also in terms of the classic art of being a woman. I like this book and it provides frameworks for what I've meant since I was 17, in saying that I will only marry a "man for all seasons," or even nowadays, in my resolve that I will only "marry at the front line of culture." The "beta" type of guy can be bad news not only personally, but also professionally, and I try my best never to deal with him. His jealousy, his insecurity, his pettiness, his narcissism, are almost always self-evident. And he's usually the one trying to criticize the alpha types. Spiritually and socially, it's best to keep one's standards high and to hold out for the very best. As a scholar, I theorize masculinity and femininity, but in the end, this is how it all comes home for me.

changed my LIFE

I'm a thirty year old, never married assistant manager in a sporting goods store. I've lived with a guy I really care about for the past four years. We talked in a general way about getting married some time in the future, but nothing ever seemed to happen with it. Last week he said he wants to think things over on his own and I found out he's interested in a twenty-two year old girl. I was devastated. I read in Alpha Male the advice on page 104. And my GOD he proposed to me (not her!)!! If this isn't the coolest book I don't know what is.
