Pretty Cover Fool Me

Do you often get tricked into believing that the book is worth your time just looking at the cover? Do you stare at it with lovey-dovey eyes & want to devour every detail? Well congratulations! You're a visual person just like me but it also means that you find yourself disappointed with a lot of books. Including this one. Yay.
From the very beginning the story seemed to be very captivating and sort of mysterious. Lucy woke up discovering that it was a different season than she remembered it was and she seems to not remember anything about herself. Even though she didn't remember, she still felt a purpose, like she was supposed to be somewhere and do something. That's where she meets Colin and simply says: "I think I'm here for you". Yes, you guessed it right. She's a ghost.
Intrigued? You shouldn't be.
Nothing happens. They fell in love. Literally, it probably takes only few seconds. Their relationship is so puppy-love, it's like somebody asking if you think their baby is cute. You think it's actually one of the ugliest babies you've ever seen but it's a baby so you make yourself smile and say that it's cute while trying to convince yourself the same thing too. Colin in this book wasn't what I expected. He's supposed to be this insane guy who stares into Death's face & does incredibly extreme things but yet the way he acts makes him seem like a coward. Yes, a coward. Lucy has no back-bone either.
Think you can overlook the characters & still think you like the book because it has a pretty cover? Yeah I wish I can do that too. But unfortunately the story itself leaves a lot out. Like why is Lucy there? Authors give us some sort of explanation but a lot is left to guessing. Also, if she's getting solid all through the book, how did she pick up a pencil at the very begining? And opened the doors? I. AM. SO. CONFUSED. < whaaaaaaaaaaat!

This review has spoilers. Note: I read an ARC of Sublime, so my review is based off that copy and edition.
I honestly cannot stop thinking about this book. Sometimes it is rare that you read a book centered on a romance that doesn't have the happily ever after we've come to expect. I know this book is going to make a lot of people go, "oh." or, "they went there huh?", or even, "well that's depressing", but it could not have ended any other way than the way it did. And this is why I liked it so much. It was not a unique idea having one protagonist be a ghost, but the way Lucy haunted, and why she was there, and her connection with Colin were unique.
I also really liked the small details woven into the story from Lucy finding out that Colin is the only one who can see her white hair, to her face changing into something awful the first time Colin is "saved" from doing something that could cause his death by Joe calling out to him. I liked that as a ghost went she couldn't float through walls, but wasn't solid either. The difference in touch from her to Colin made their relationship even more unique. As we met Henry and Alex, and learned a bit more about Caroline's accident I found myself thinking, yes okay, everyone who has gone after a ghost thought they were going to be able to bring someone back, and Colin is going to be the first one to do it. I was wrong. When I got to the bit with Melissa's story I couldn't imagine why her "guardian" would want her to do drugs. That goes against everything Henry said. But it gives you that moment of pause and warning before the carpet is pulled out from under you and you realize the ghosts have a power they don't even know, the power to lure their "protected" to death.
A few things I would have liked expanded on are: how did Alex/Henry find their connection? We know Henry was killed in the woods but was it by someone Alex knew? Or was their only connection someone dying and seeing their ghost at the right time because it was on school grounds? I also got the feeling that both Dot and Joe knew more about the ghosts in this area but there wasn't much detail about what they knew, and why they chose to believe what they did. They are secondary characters yes, but at the same time, I think a little bit of expansion on their mindsets, and if Joe knew who Lucy REALLY was would have been helpful. It was also interesting that Lucy's ability to injure someone who stood in her way only came out in the beginning and then at the end. I think her injuring someone in the middle would have been a nice reminder because I had forgotten it happened already by the time I got to the end. Finally, I would have liked more explanation on the WHY Colin saw Lucy differently. We know Henry didn't see Alex's illness like Lucy did, but was the same true in the reverse for them? Did Henry have white hair like Lucy? Was this a common trait for the ghosts?
Mostly, I just liked that this book pushes against the boundaries of romance, and takes the reader into a new world of opportunity and doesn't shy away from doing what fits the characters best, versus what may make the reader most happy. Not to mention, how rare is it that we get a standalone book in YA right now? It's refreshing.
