Cognitive Psychology for Detectives

This book is the classic reference for applying principles of cognitive psychology to investigative interviewing. It focuses on helping witnesses remember accurately, given how our minds and memories naturally work. It deals less with issues of detecting deception and motivating uncooperative witnesses to tell the truth.

The book's thirteen chapters outline the requirements of investigative interviewing and the basics of human cognition as they build toward the author's model of successful cognitive interviewing. Initial chapters discuss the problems inherent in eyewitness accounts of crimes and the need to structure interviews to obtain accurate information from even the most cooperative witness. Readers learn the basic dynamics of an interview, how to choose the best setting and how to ask effective questions and overcome barriers that stand in the way of good answers.

Later chapters introduce principles of human cognition and apply them to the demands of interviewing. Lessons learned include techniques for recreating the context of a witnessed event, strategies for probing to get additional detail, and sequencing from open-ended to specific, detail oriented closed-ended questions. A later chapter includes annotated transcripts of two interviews which illustrate and highlight these techniques.

The capstone chapter outlines a training and practice regimen for acquiring the thirteen basic skills of cognitive interviewing. These skills are (from p. 186):

--2. Listen actively
--3. Tell eyewitnesses to actively generate info (don't wait passively)
--4. Ask open-ended questions
--5. Pause before asking follow-up questions
--6. Don't interrupt
--7. Explicitly request detailed descriptions
--8. Encourage eyewitnesses to concentrate intensely
--9. Encourage eyewitnesses to use imagery
-10. Recreate the original event's context
-11. Adopt the eyewitness's perspective
-12. Ask eyewitness-compatible questions
-13. Follow the Cognitive Interview sequence

This is an interesting read from the history of interviewing and cognitive psychology. Practitioners looking for a more current evolution of cognitive investigative interviewing may prefer Pauletta Otis's Educing Information: Interrogation Science and Art. Also, Fisher and Geiselman's techniques should not be confused with the "cognitive interviewing" approach to improving survey questionnaires described in Cognitive Interviewing: A Tool for Improving Questionnaire Design by Gordon Willis.

As every investigator knows, well articulated eyewitness statements are essential to any good case. The CI is the most effective and proven non-hypnotic victim/witness interview that I am aware of. This book presents the principles of effective interviewing in a very clear and easy to understand manner. It is not loaded with useless theory, but rather very practical techniques to use as well as those to avoid.

A Tantalising Introduction into how to be as cool as Jesus

If you're looking for an Audio book for Tricks of the Mind, then sadly this CD isn't it. Although there are many E-Books (and similar) claiming to provide short-cuts to Derren Brown's secrets, most are sadly not the genuine article and the best way of discovering his techniques is through reading Tricks of the Mind.

What this CD is (in its own words) is 'Crumbs from the Table of the Master'; it is a taster of some of the best bits of the book in order to whet your appetite for the real thing.

CD1 covers 'Memory' & includes 3 systems for remembering useful material, without rote learning or similar.
The first system is very useful for lists of random objects, the second for speeches (without notes) and the third is about how to remember people's names at parties etc. With each, he gives practical tips in using them and I personally have found the latter surprisingly effective in customer services (where remembering names is the ultimate in flattery).

CD2 is longer & covers two sections: Magic and Hypnosis.
Magic, he teaches you a coin trick (which is the opening of the actual book) and elaborates on it to show how a trick can be made very sophisticated from a simple start.
He also guides you through a card trick & reveals an important technique for magician's to exploit (Newton's Third Law of Motion).
Lastly, there is Hypnosis. This is better covered in the book (e.g. the Dormitory Elephant), but the glimpse here is revealing into how to create and build a hypnotic 'trance'. Although he is brief, the material here can be used effectively to become an amateur hypnotist since all the technique requires is confidence.
(As an important aside for motorists (such as myself): this section doesn't use any actual hypnotic techniques, so it is alright to use in the car.)

So, this CD is not a complete work-through of Tricks of the Mind but is more a glimpse at its contents in order to draw you further into the mystery of his magic.
If you, like me, enjoy audio material that is moderately stretching but not as cerebrally painful as Charles Dickens, then this CD is surprisingly enjoyable.
If however you are after finding out his secrets (so that you can fool Clod-pates, Halfwits & Harlequins AND Charlie-sat-before-you), then you should get the book instead.
Either way (to use one of the NLP techniques from the CD), it is difficult to avoid the allure of the mysterious...

Derren Brown's "Tricks of the Mind" is pure genius. This CD, an extract from his book, gives a rare insight into the talents of Brown, a national celebrity in his native UK. He is also revered by magicians and mentalists around the world for his groundbreaking techniques.

The CD, narrated by Derren himself, is divided up into three catagories. They are memory, magic, or hypnosis. Each chapter is broken down into easy to understand elements that make the listener want to learn the techniques gathered by Brown's years of experience

Derren Browns books are not instructional as far as revealing how he performs the amazing things he does, but still quite enjoyable, and educational as far as insight for someone as a performer of magic or mentalism. I have read all of his books and all are well worth reading.

I love this series as a piano teacher. I have my students buy the Performace, Theory, Technique and Artistry, and Lesson books. They are really well rounded students.

Interesting for an adult learner

II took up piano again as an adult to honor my late mother's wish that I learn to play. I prefer Piano Adventure more than John Thompson which I started on or Schwam. I like the Piano Adventure approach to music theory and think the separate theory book is a great introduction to music theory. The music lessons feature music that is a more modern. The music was written to teach specific things so it is clear what you need to learn. To me, each lesson can be learned and digested faster at this level than in some of the other classic lesson series. I feel more of sense that I am making progress and learning things than I did with John Thompson.

My favorite series

I have been really impressed with with the Piano Adventure series. I prefer it over the Bastian or Alfred books. I think there is a good variety in the books and the pieces are fun. I'd recommend all the Piano Adventures books.

A "POPULAR" VERSION (AND UPDATED) OF HIS "THE HISTORICAL JESUS"

John Dominic Crossan (born 1934) is a New Testament scholar, historian of early Christianity, Professor Emeritus at DePaul University, and former Catholic priest known for co-chairing the Jesus Seminar; he has written/co-written many books such as The Historical Jesus, Who Killed Jesus?, The Essential Jesus, Excavating Jesus, The First Christmas, The Resurrection of Jesus: John Dominic Crossan and N. T. Wright in Dialogue, A Long Way from Tipperary: What a Former Monk Discovered in His Search for the Truth, etc. [NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 209-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the Prologue to this 1994 book, "This book gives my own reconstruction of the historical Jesus derived from twenty-five years of scholarly research on what actually happened in Galilee and Jerusalem during the early first century of the common era." (Pg. ix-x) He adds, "Those who wish to explore this subject in more detail and complexity may go to the much longer book on which this one is based [The Historical Jesus]... The present book if a more popular version of that one, but it is also something more. Every chapter contains something beyond the parent volume. And the cumulative impact of this historical biography is, I trust, more compelling and dramatic precisely because of its compact, direct presentation. It has benefited from debates and discussions, from questions and objections, and from rethinking and reconsidering that earlier book..." (Pg. xiv)

He states, "Open commensality is the symbol and embodiment of radical egalitarianism, of an absolute equality of people that denies the validity of any discrimination between them and negates the necessity of any hierarchy among them." (Pg. 71) He explains, "What Jesus was doing is located exactly on the borderline between the covert and the overt arts of resistance. It was not, of course, as open as the acts of protesters, prophets, bandits, or messiahs. But it was more open than playing dumb, imagining revenge, or simply recalling Mosiac or Davidic ideals. His eating and healing were... the precise borderline between private and public, covert and overt, secret and open reisistance. But it was no less surely resistance for all of that. A further question: Did Jesus have any type of organized social program for others to adopt and follow? We know already that he had a magnificent vision of the Kingdom of God here on earth and that by his own actions he already practiced what he preached." (Pg. 105-206)

He admits, "We have, in the final analysis, no way of knowing for sure what Jesus knew about Cynicism, or whether he knew about it at all. That, however, is not really the point. Maybe he had never even heard of the Cynics and was just reinventing the Cynic wheel all by himself... Both are populists, appealing to the ordinary people; both are life-style preachers, advocating their position... in practice; both use dress and equipment to symbolize dramatically their message. But he is rural, they are urban; he is organizing a communal movement, they are following an individual philosophy; and their symbolism demands knapsack and staff, his no-knapsack and no-staff. Maybe Jesus is what peasant JEWISH Cynicism looked like." (Pg. 122)

He concludes, "The historical Jesus was a peasant Jewish Cynic. His peasant village was close enough to a Greco-Roman city like Sepphoris that sight and knowledge of Cynicism are neither inexplicable nor unlikely. But his work was among the houses and hamlets of Lower Galilee. His strategy... was the combination of free healing and common eating, a religious and economic egalitarianiism that negated alike and at once the hierarchical and patronal normalcies of Jewish religion and Roman power... He was neither broker nor mediator but, somewhat paradoxically, the announcer that neither should exist between humanity and divinity or between humanity and itself. Miracle and parable, healing and eating were calculated to force individuals into unmediated physical and spiritual contact with God and unmediated physical and spiritual contact with one another. He announced, in other words, the unmediated or brokerless Kingdom of God." (Pg. 198)

Although "The Historical Jesus" contains much more detail and justification or Crossan's points, this version is very helpful for those wanting more of an "overview" of his views.

Cautionary Tale about Writting Historical Biography with a Mirror

Over the course of the late spring and early summer of this year I have been reading a number of books from various perspectives concerning Christianity and history. I was already somewhat familiar with Dr. Crossan having read his contributions alongside those of other scholars in a couple of previous books as well of course his numerous television interviews over the years. Although I highly disagree with many of his theological (and historical) views, I thought this would make a good popular level work from a perspective opposed to my own (I am a Christian of generally theologically conservative but not fundamentalist beliefs). Ultimately I found that "Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography" is an excellent example of how history should not be written.

First though I will note a few positives about the book. Crossan's writing style is generally fluid and accessible to the non-scholar. I also found sections of the book informative; even arguments I disagreed with were sometimes helpful in providing me a view of Dr. Crossan's thought patterns. The author is obviously well read and studied in his area of expertise although this conversely makes his final product that much more puzzling and disappointing.

Now I should elaborate on the previous sentence. Crossan views Jesus in this work as a sort of poor, presumably illiterate Jewish cynic who flouts societal conventions regarding social stratification. Firstly, Crossan puts his view upon shaky foundations to begin with. The view that Jesus's upbringing was that of a day laborer has certainly been opposed by scholars arguing for Joseph being a skilled craftsman (I should note that I am using the common translation of names familiar in English bibles such as Jesus instead of Yeshua, etc.) while scholars such as Dr. Craig Evans have argued for the literacy of Jesus. Likewise, Crossan's use of Thomas as of equal weight with the four Canonical Gospels is problematic considering the arguments that Thomas was a second century written long after its predecessors. Time and again though it seemed that Crossan was reading twentieth century political and social views back into the first century. His discussion of Jesus's healings read more like the actions of a social worker than of a person with a reputation for the supernatural as presented in the earliest sources. I presume based on some of the author's statements and commentary by others that much of Crossan's interpretations may stem from a personal disbelief in the possibility of the miraculous. Likewise mid-late twentieth century anti-colonial feeling seems projected back unto the Roman world. This is not to say that one cannot find parallels between empires of all ages but one should be careful if it appears that a particular strand of modern ideology begins to blatantly manifest itself in a work of ancient history. Crossan's views on the Canonical Gospels are often over-skeptical. This is especially true for much of Jesus's adult ministry and his Passion. Once again scholars such as Evans are far more persuasive arguing for example for the burial of Jesus and an empty tomb. Even the infancy narratives in Mathew and Luke (where many would argue Crossan has more justification for greater skepticism) have defenses that should not be merely glossed over. Once Crossan discusses the early church, his imagination really goes to work and I do not mean this in a positive manner. Interpretations of nature miracles as power plays or casting out demons as hidden political symbolism not only miss the clearest readings of the texts but require enormous speculations. One could go on with critiquing Crossan for some time; his overall thesis and argumentation are not only inferior to the far more evidentially logical case made by numerous Conservative scholars but actually seems considerably less plausible than some other critical views.

In summation, Crossan has given me a better view of his own ideas that was quite readable and at times informative. Unfortunately his central thesis is not an evidentially or historically sound picture of Jesus which falls considerably short of the traditional view.

This is an accessible summary version of Crossan's considerable body of writing on the historical Jesus. The concepts and material in this book should be in the vernacular of anyone having an intelligent conversation about Christianity.

Great read! Check it out!

I have to say that Im totally enjoying this book. Im not even a big sports fan and I dont think you really need to be one to enjoy this. Its just super interesting reading about all the,drugs, greed, booze, and gambling (and the cover ups by the leagues, owners, coaches and players: WOW!!) that plays a HUGE roll in pro and college sports. Im about half way done and I dont want it to end. I just love reading about these so-called "role models" hanging around with gangsters, getting wasted, getting high, and gambling themselves so deep, that they have to throw games to get out! This book helps me justify my own feelings about most sports (especially football) being fake and or rigged by players, owners or even umpires.
....and I havent even got to the Pete Rose section yet!!!!

GET THIS BOOK!!! HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

If you prefer your favorite sports to read like fairy tales - dont read this book.

If you are able to separate yourself from speaking or thinking about your favorite sport team in the collective "we" then you will love Brian Tuohy's "The Fix is in". The book has been tabbed as a "conspiracy theory" book - but I would argue that the book in fact is NOT a conspiracy theory book as those books usually just throw out wild accusations with no basis or foundation to begin to even build a question or theory on. The Fix is In - is rather a suggestion and challenge to the general public and "die hard" sports fan to consider certain truths both documented and notably alleged. If you approach the book as a research document you will find much more supporting evidence of very "shady" transactions or occurrences that have gone widely ignored or unknown. Even the lack of coverage of such transactions / transgressions is a very interesting topic covered in the book. I think Tuohy opens the door to some very provocative and potentially very damning questions... and I say its about time

Changed the way I think about sports

Let me start that I am not much into conspiracy theories. However, after reading Brian Tuohy's excellent The Fix Is In, I am not so sure. Tuohy's makes the case that professional sports are too big and make too much money to be left to chance. Sports are just are version of "Bread and Circuses" from Roman times. Ratings are hugely important because that drives revenue. The NBA is probably the biggest culprit. Ever wonder why the Lakers and Celtics (now the Heat) are always in the finals? They get better ratings because they have the "superstars". Wonder why Michael Jordan never got fouls called on him? Wonder why the Knicks won the lottery for Patrick Ewing? That's what the commissioner David Stern wanted. A very good book that will make you think.

William P. Spence is Dean of the College of Technology as well as Professor of Construction Engineering Technology emeritus at Pittsburg State University in KS. He currently is active as a full-time author of more than 30 technical construction books.

Eva Kultermann is Associate Professor in the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology where she teaches courses in Materials, Architectural Design, Design Build, architectural Technology, Vertical Framing, and Energy Conscious/Sustainable Design. In 2011 she was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Architecture. Formerly, she taught at the University of Arkansas and won the school's Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award. She also worked as a professional builder, trim carpenter, foreperson, and project manager. Ms. Kultermann holds a Carpentry Diploma from Northwest Arkansas Vocational Technical School, a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas, and an M.S. in Energy Efficient Architecture from Oxford Brooks University in England.

About the Author

Andrew Ashworth is Vinerian Professor of English Law in the University of Oxford, a member of the Centre for Criminology and a Fellow of All Souls College. Until 2010 he was chair of the Sentencing Advisory Panel for England and Wales. He is co-directing (with Professor Lucia Zedner) a three-year study of Preventive Justice, generously funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Lucia Zedner is Professor of Criminal Justice in the Faculty of Law and a member of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford. She is currently the General Editor of the Oxford University Press monograph series Clarendon Studies in Criminology. With Andrew Ashworth, Professor Zedner is currently co-directing a three-year study of Preventive Justice generously funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. She is also Conjoint Professor, Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales, Sydney, where she is a regular visitor.

Patrick Tomlin is Lecturer in Political Theory at the University of Reading. Prior to taking up this post in January 2012, he was a postdoctoral researcher on the Arts & Humanities Research Council-funded Preventive Justice project at the University of Oxford, and a Junior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

Ari Berman is a political correspondent for The Nation and an investigative journalism Fellow at the Nation Institute. Essential, riveting and vivid.

Give Us the Ballot is the history of how the Voting Rights Act came into being, took hold and changed America. It's also the story of the conservative undertow that contested the law from its beginning, recognized its value in shifting the polarities of our two major parties via "The Southern Strategy" and then launched a counterrevolution during the Reagan Administration set on undermining the law before the nation's changing demographics could pose a serious threat to the right's southern and rural hegemony.

You'll recognize many of the stars of the conservative effort to limit voting rights -- from William Rehnquist to John Roberts to Ted Cruz. But it's the life of John Lewis who provides the through line of Berman's spirited narrative. From Selma to Shelby, Lewis is a participant and a witness to the massive changes he helped force and the backlash those changes sparked. No testimony is more stirring or crucial to understanding the stakes -- both moral and political -- involved in providing America's most vulnerable citizens access to the ballot.

“How many of you are going to leave here and remember the blood of the martyrs?” William J. Barber, the architect of North Carolina’s Moral Mondays movement that rose up in part to oppose the right’s attack on voting rights, asked a crowd in 2014.

Did he really?

I don't believe that this reviewer read the book. If he did, he was given an advanced copy for being a book blogger or one of the other perks for getting a review copy. Whether or not, the book is not about showing/proving social security numbers in order to vote the the United States, which actually reinforces my belief that the reviewer did not read the book, since that is the only complaint he has, and it's weak. In addition, a reviewer who received an advanced copy would know how weak the review is.

I am currently reading the book, and I listened to the NPR Fresh Air interview with the author. Read before you decide. And, if you are interested in historical background that reflects current events, the book enlightens. I am in process of discovering how phony the US looks,espousing its values while finding ways to thwart those values in order for a political view to prevail over another. My discovery is not limited to the subject of this book.

Although I am far from finished, I will give the book 5 stars, since I can't put it down, and I have to go to work .

A powerful and provocative look at attempts to limit the right to vote

This book provides a superb history of the events leading to the Voting Rights Act, and the history of the impact of the Voting Rights Act, including countless efforts to limit the voting or impact of minority voters. The book also makes clear that the impetus behind voter fraud concerns and restrictions on early voting and registration is really an attempt to limit the voting of the poor and minority voters. Royal Masset, the former executive director of the Texas Republican party said that "anyone who says that a lack of voter ID won't discriminate against otherwise legal minority voters is lying" and said voter ID laws were "sheer racism" designed to suppress Democratic voters (at 259-260). Cutbacks in early voting hours were defended by the Republican party chair in Ohio who said we "shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban-read African-American-voter-turnout machine" (at 264).
